I grew bored of my reliable but gutless w124 200te. Buying a car with the heaviest body and the smallest engine in the range was never a recipie for fun, though it was a decent enough mode of transport ....

I ended up doing a trade for this saab 900T16....

Its been a long time since I last owned one, the narrow upright cabin is a familiar place as at one stage I owned six or seven, crashing two of them in the course of ownership.

This one has some period fog lamps, and some extra dash mounted guages. As per most older 900s, the headling would be drooping around your ears if it hadnt been pinned up with tacks

Looks well smart, how are all the usual c900 grot areas like the doors, boot floor, driveshaft tunnels etc?

A T16S should blow away the cobwebs after a 2 litre Merc wagon, that's for sure!

This forum needs more Saab 900s, far too many bloody Volvo estates on here recently!

It looks in fairly decent nick overall, esp considering its almost 25 years old. The doors have been repaired previously, theres a (neat) patch in the boot floor, tunnels ok. Agreed, its a nice refreshing change from the misery of the merc's performance. I love mercs, but I found that one to be totally devoid of character.

Gearbox ok.........?

Theres a slight whine in the lower gears. I'm unsure wether to be worried about this or not. no jumping out of gears, and they select cleanly.

I've got it in next week at my local respected saab specialist to give it a once over as I fancy driving it to Germany at the end of next month, but not without having that whining checked! Stuck on a miserable drizzly Belgian motorway with a blown 'box wouldnt go down well with the missus!!

Mine whines a bit too, sounds a bit like an old Mini. :D

I think it's more the jumping out of gear and crunching changes that signifies a kippered box.

That one looks to have quite a few goodies, I see it has aircon, cruise control and a rear wiper too.

What's the mileage on it? Mine's a real low mileage example (only 151,000 miles.) 8)

I think Steve Lewis is reckoned to be the best in the business, that's who did the one on mine (before I bought it, so I've no idea how much it costs).

I can thoroughly recommend joining up to http://www.uksaabs.co.uk/UKS/index.php too, if you haven't already done so. It's a good forum with a lot of 900 owners and experts.

I know they can get into a hell of a state, like I said, mine was done by Steve Lewis, a bit of a legend in Saab circles, I think it takes about a day so it won't be cheap, but it's worth it IMO. If your 900 is as good as it looks in the pics, it'll be well worth doing.

I can second this. About 2 years ago, I acquired a rather shoddy yellow 900t convertable. Got in touch with him about some bits, and he asked me for the chassis number. When I gave him the info, he got a bit excited, and told me I had a limited edition Monte Carlo [i think] and offered me a bloody fortune for it! I delivered it to him, [he hadn't seen it until I turned up on his doorstep with it] and he paid up instantly!

Due to knackered rear shocks the saab is a bit of a wallowy old bus at the mo, but these are on order. I did fancy buying some uprated sports springs and dampers, but my budget will only stretch to replaced the knackered rear shocks. My tame local specialist thinks its pinion bearing whine, not the worst hes heard, recons live with it at the mo. The seats were originally blood red/ burgundy but with time and uv etc they have faded in lots of places to a muddy grey. Ive orderd up a renovation/ dyeing kit and will report on the degree of success/ disaster over the b hol weekend

nice car. gearbox always whines a little (chain drive final drive) but if it starts whining loudly in 5th at 55 under load and works it's way to lower gears the diff is dying, non turbo's can linger quite a while like this, but with a turbo it's not if but when the box terminates! mine changed gear fine before dying but you could feel the shunt in the worn diff....

Another missus enforced sale, 1 months mot 6 months tax. black with blood red leather (slightly faded) auxilliary guages fitted and fogs/ sport steering wheel apparently from new. Drives very well, 400 recently spent on specialist check over/ full service and 2 new rear shocks. Drives well, good shove in the back when the boost kicks in! 2 wheelarches have 50p sized bubbles, slight rust to edge of sunroof, droopy but pinned up headlining and slight pinnion bearing whine from the gearbox. I had the saab specialist check it over, he said it was one of the better ones, and just to live with the slight whine rather than do anything about it. Reluctant sale, but the missus is putting her foot down!
