Jon
Always good to see Euro stuff on this thread, as I rarely/never see such stuff nowadays. I've said it before but seriously, how have silver, grey, black and white become the default shades of car paint? Surely, the owners of the charcoal coloured cars surrounding that fantastically orange 104 stop and have a little think.... That 205 is a great shot, though I suppose I am biased (ours is being lent out to family at the moment and I think I miss it more than I thought). I Like how you've overcome the unusual/dull connotations that is car spotting and have got the whole family involved. I'm guessing it's a gradual erosion of their disapproving tendencies over the years, rather than out and out enthusiasm but it's commendable, nonetheless! wuvvum
The first photo in Tuesday's post is also a Berliet design I think, but it's the "coach" version rather than the "bus" version, so not quite the same. There were still a few of them in use on shorter-distance National Express-type routes when we moved to France in the mid '90s.
Spottedlaurel
I Like how you've overcome the unusual/dull connotations that is car spotting and have got the whole family involved. I'm guessing it's a gradual erosion of their disapproving tendencies over the years, rather than out and out enthusiasm but it's commendable, nonetheless! They do put up with a lot, including obscure detours and cross-country routes that take us far longer to get from A-B, me wandering off in supermarket car parks, stopping at slightly unsavoury places etc. That being said, I do have a self-imposed limit and sometimes I'll sacrifice a stop in the hope that there might be something better a bit later on. The owner was talking about getting it back on the road for his teenage daughter, not sure if this is in hand (last MoT still listed as expiring in 2008). 1989 Nissan Micra 1.0 GSX (K10) by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Difficult to believe that this truly went in as 'scrappage' against a new VW. 1990 Lexus LS400 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Would love an early one someday. Noticeable that there was much less to be seen up that way, but..... 1980 Volvo 244 DL by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1980 Volvo 244 DL by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Did see this en-route. In an unusual move, it's a case of an older Volvo which appears to have moved south from Scotland. Sadly I wasn't in the Laurel as it would have made for a good photo opportunity. By way of contrast, the Volvo would have been more expensive new in 1980 than the Datsun. 1982 Ford Cortina 1.6 Crusader by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1982 Ford Cortina 1.6 Crusader by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr With the job change it's likely that this will be my last ever Lidl spot (at this store anyway). Seems like a good way to finish. 1996 Toyota Celica 2.0 GT Cabriolet by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Interesting alternative to an MX-5? 1999 Rover 200 BRM by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Possibly the first one I've photographed. 2007 Hyundai Grandeur V6 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr First one I can even recall seeing. Ford Transit Mk2 (Dutch?) by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Limited time out and about in daylight hours meant that the finds inevitably get scarcer towards the end of the year but this was a satisfying thing to see. I think I saw it driving around on Dutch plates earlier in the year and it's possibly an ex-Red Cross (German?) ambulance of some sort. Up-to-date at last. Back to scanning old photos and postcards for the rest of the winter. Dick Longbridge, adw1977, wuvvum and 6 others
Angrydicky
Top spots as always Nigel. Seems weird to now recognise quite a few of those locations (if not any of the cars, apart from the scrappage Micra). The Micra is worse than it looks; the sills and arches are fairly rotten. I haven't seen much in the way of tat since I've been up there, but I did see a Renault 20 not long ago, in Diss Morrisons, which made up for it! 406V6
1991 Pontiac Firebird 3.1 by Spottedlaurel, on FlickrSome excellent spots there, particularly the 80s tat - Cavalier and Accord. The Firebird had me scratching my head as 3rd gen Firebirds are one of my specialist spotting subjects. This one can't be a 91 model due to the bumpers. The lack of central stop light on the spoiler (and the design of spoiler) makes it pre-86 model year. The wheel trims were common in all-black on 83 and 84 Transams. If I had to place a bet I'd say this was an 83 or 84 Transam with the 5.0 V8 although someone might have dressed up a base model Firebird.
Spottedlaurel
I haven't seen much in the way of tat since I've been up there, but I did see a Renault 20 not long ago, in Diss Morrisons, which made up for it! I think I've seen that one a couple of times this summer. Brown A-reg? The local 20-in-a-bush was cleared away some years ago. That transit looks odd with the single axle at the back. May have seen that one out and about since my original photo. Got some domestic 2018 stuff to come, but for now I'll update with this year's French holiday. A week down south plus a good circular route with overnight stops there and back (roughly anti-clockwise either side of Paris). Day 1-2 Home > Dieppe > Versailles > Orleans 1990 Nissan Figaro by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Ford Fiesta Mk1 bodyshell by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Couple of oddities seen on the way down to Newhaven. Not sure about the Fiesta's new running gear. 1990 Opel Corsa Calypso by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr First French spot. There was an Estafette trundling around Dieppe, but as it was dark and we were on the move I can only live with the memory of its yellow headlights. 1985 Mini 1000 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Ventilated bootlid option. Renault Juvaquatre by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr I only ever seem to see these as semi-mobile billboards. 1972 Renault Estafette by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr This made up for missing the Estafette at Dieppe. 1982 Mini 1000 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Good to see on 10" wheels. 1970 Renault 4 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Still lots of 1980s 4s knocking around, but I think this was the oldest I saw by some way. 1991 Honda Civic 1.6i-16 x2 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Someone here liked their modified Japanese cars. MX-5 was also lowered and sat on wide wheels and stretched tyres. 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser LX 2.4 TD by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Lots of Land Cruisers seen this year. Twingo twins and 406 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Typical small-town scene. 1989 Ford Sierra 2.0 GT by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Looked tidy. No Mk1s seen this year. Smalltown Renault garage by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Good to see places like this still going. Assuming it's a long-time dealer, imagine the stuff that would have been in that showroom over the years. After a mention on here by Mr & Mrs Six-Cylinder, I was intrigued by the Aerotrain concept and planned our route so I could stop and take a look for myself. Much of the concrete track still remains, running parallel to the D2020 through the flat countryside down to Orleans. In the 1970s the prototype I80 apparently ran along here at 250mph, which must have been somewhat awe-inspiring to see hurtling along on the elevated track (an inverted T-section of reinforced concrete). Very peaceful now though, as we'd been driving for a while I had a snooze.... Toyota Camry 2.4i VVT-i by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Dutch holidaymakers with discerning taste. Orleans achieved with no autoroute travel and the usual rain encountered in northern France. Pushing on southwards in the next installment. Spottedlaurel
Second attempt at this update - I managed to get everything pretty much ready to go last time then closed the wrong tab....... Day 3 Orleans > Le Puy en Velay(ish) Pushing on southwards, sadly spending too much time on the autoroute but I made the most of the bits before and after that. 196? Bit of a view of the main square in Orleans in the background, nice place. Peugeot J7 Camping Car by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr I've a feeling someone may have been in this when I took my photo. I wonder if it's the case that older campers randomly parked-up in French towns are actually someone's living accommodation. 1998 Honda Accord 2.2i by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Hondas seem to be more common than other comparable Japanese makes. 1989 Honda/Acura Legend 2.7 by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1989 Honda/Acura Legend 2.7 + Concerto by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Very pleased to see this. Initially I drove past the garage, but several miles down the road I got the feeling that I'd missed out on something quite special so I turned around and went back for a better look - glad I did. Consensus of opinion on Flickr seems to be that it's a North American Acura import. Bonus late Concerto, just a rebadged R8? Mercedes W114/W115(?) by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr This was at the same place. I imagine there would have been more stuff in the trees and out the back. 1991 Citroen BX Image by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr 1990 Renault 5 TR by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Black platers at a small town supermarket. I heard it when I was looking at the BX, and hoped it would pull into the supermarket, but it drove by and I muffed-up by trying to zoom in too much. 1987 Renault 5 Five by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Another 5 on black plates. Tesserault Caravan by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr Notin Caravan by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr A good reason not to drive on autoroutes - on some 200 miles of the A71 these were the only things I saw of any interest. Isaac Hunt
Excellent, a Lot of the shots in France remind me of when I was a kid traveling on holiday in France. The vehicle parc was so different in the 1970's France to 1970's UK. Nowadays everything is silver grey and apart from the steering wheel, maybe the odd badge, sometimes a car park could be anywhere in Europe. Lacquer Peel
The Concerto is indeed a rebadged R8, instead of fitting the XUD to Concertos they badged Rover 218 diesels as Hondas. Great thread, I've just caught up on a year's worth.
