Are you satisfied with your shite?

I was just thinking earlier today as I tried to decide whether to take the Saab or the Merc for the 20 mile round trip I had to do, that for the first time in ages I've got two working cars that I really like. :D

I then realised that it's been a good three or four months since I've been on Ebay/Gumtree etc seriously looking for a car, rather than just idly browsing to see what's about.

I don't know whether to be worried or not, is there a boom with my name on it just around the corner?:lol:

So, are you happy with your motoring lot at the moment or are you always looking for that one piece of shite nirvana?

Yes and no. The fleet is up to 11, but half of the "keepers" are not running atm :(

I'm looking to sell at least 4 (Subaru XT, R25, Saab, RRC) and then spend the money from those sorting out the Mitsubishi, Renault GTA & VW Scirocco ... oh and I want a big wafty diesel/auto barge, pref of the XM flavour. Thats the current plan.

Not really. Dislike the Volvo as it is boring big style and stuff is starting to go wrong but CBA to fix it. Due to emigrating not allowed anything else so I dont even looks :(

VW goes today so down to just one volvo I dislike...

I love my 240 estate but I'm bored of it now! Hopefully the 205 dizzler I have just picked up won't be too difficult to return to the road and will do better on the fuel economy than the Volvo.

Well, there's a question.

Daf 33, I will be when I get it. It is playing hardball with a brake problem. Volvo 66 estate, also non-operational at the moment. I hope to bond with it and be happy, we'll see.

'67 Triumph 1300 FWD, oh dear. Despite this being road legal and obviously tax-exempt, it is becoming tatty re: paint. The red interior is class but some bits need finishing off. I fear I am falling out of love with it and may be tempted to sell or swap perhaps. Value around the £695 mark as is. Anyone interested enough to save me from the automotive doldrums?

The 480 is now finally starting to grow on me, and from a sensible viewpoint, I should keep it, considering it statrs every day, is big enough for kid stuff and is pretty decent on juice. But, there's still a part of me that wants something else. Not sure what, but it'll probably be Italian or dull and economical. Only thing stopping me is epic skintness.

The Mrs S 156, on the other hand, is really pissing me off. She's fed up with it, now, and just wants something a bit more "her". (smaller) Can't believe how litle interest it's generated, to the point where I'm actually seriously considering a no reserve ebay auction

Finally, I've decided the Celica has to go. It just isn't going to get used in the near future, and is too good to just become a garage ornament. Just need to find the time to recommission it and give it a good clean.

K11.

I really shouldnt have bought this car. But at the time it was too good to turn down. Sub £1000, fresh MOT, one giffer owner from new, FNSH, incredibly low miles (20K), last one I owned did over 45 MPG and it was small and red....

So I bought it....

Now Im financially stuck where because its so bloody reliable I cant afford to replace it with anything else that is likely to be as reliable. & know that if I do replace it the moment ANYTHING at all goes wrong with the replacement the wife will be moaning at me " you shouldnt have got rid of the little red Micra should you...."

Its soooooo boring though.

Father Ted could never decide which little red K11 to take to work....

Yes and no: so much quality shite out there and finite parking space means there'll always be some rotation.

I like my current fleet, more or less, but I don't like the fact that I have five cars and a motorbike and only one (the modern) is currently working. The fixes to get the others working aren't particularly hard, but work means I have bugger all free time. It'll be like this until at least September. I'm not complaining - very glad to have the work - but it's a pain when it comes to keeping a fleet of crap cars going.

Anyway, at least now I've got a long weekend at home so if the rain stops I'll finish the brakes on the Golf and give it an oil and coolant change, so it should be ready to attempt an MOT. Might even persuade the starter motor out of the Rover as well and then I can attempt to refurbish it next weekend.

I was supposed to be spending this spring/summer recommissioning the Dedra, but since that's 150 miles away I can't see it happening. Might have to pay someone else to get it road legal; not really the shiter's way but that's its only chance of making it to Shitefest.

Bike will be sold once I've sorted the electrics, Rover will get an MOT once its starter motor is fixed and then may well get moved on in favour of a Saab/Volvo/W124 motorway cruiser (as advised by the community in another thread). Scirocco is now terminally rusty and will get weighed in; Golf and Dedra are probably keepers.

Yes, at the moment I am.

Kangoo - rattly but does 50+mpg and brilliant for throwing boxes / kids / other stuff in. Properly useful and not that bad to drive as long as I'm not doing massive miles in it.

SEAT - Still in love after five years. Water leak fixed and at present all working as it should. MOT'd with no advisories either. Probably the best car I've ever owned really.

Yes and No with both of them. The Polo is annoying me because he needs more money than I have to spend on him to get him right again, but I can't wait to be able to hoon about on the wiggly roads again. The Princess is making me look like I actually go to the gym sometimes, it's the only time I've wanted to put PAS on a car, and that makes me grumpy... but once you get going she's super comfortable and has been quite reliable and not as thirsty as expected overall.

Sometimes I think I'd like a reliable car, but then I realise how bored I'd be and how little enthusiasm I'd have for enjoying said car, so overall I suppose I do still like my shitters and their personalities.

I like all my cars for different reasons. Merc is sublime to drive and makes you feel like you've borrowed it off someone dead posh. TR7 is just an out and out laugh, Honda just a reliable every day runner, Corsa nice because in really tidy condition and so easy to drive it's lovely.

Would I change any of them? Hell yeah, I get bored very easily and always looking out for/planning my next motor.

I would be if I could get the bastard to start.I never thought it would so much hassle to remove and refit a dizzy, then to time the thing up. You would think after all the welding I had done it would be happy to go, but oh no.

I did post up the R25 on here and think I mentioned selling the XT in the news thread, but here's a link to the XT on RR click

The Mk1 Fiesta is running like a pig thats eaten an anvil. Misfiring and making an annoying lack of progress and the Lancia is fill of rust in places that are unreachable with my current tools, so no I am not satisfied and have a distinct hankering for something BL or Austin Rover flavoured again. That of course is to supplement my current fleet which I love very much but are getting on my nerves

Yesterday I got shut of my hateful 04 Reg Ford Ka and got an S reg Protn Persona 1.5, one owner since 18 months old, fsh, 58k and its much better than I thought it would be, even down to the factory fit radio cassette!

Maybe its wrong to like a 13 year old car that was old technology when it was new but, yes I'm 100% satisfied, so there!! :D

It seems weird that, looking back, since 2004 (when I stopped buying new cars on finance every couple of years and got back into older cars), none of the old shite I've owned has ever let me down. As in major mechanical phails (engine, gearbox, axles etc), or suddenly ground to a halt on a fast road, failed to start on a busy roundabout, etc. Because of that, I'm extemely happy with my decision to run around in old chod.

I've had a pretty good run with the four Mercedes 190s I've had.

No1 (£2000 from a 'specialist' dealer) was traded in when the first signs of oil-in-water (corroded head, extremely common on 1.8s) were discovered. But it was still totally reliable, still never overheated or used water to any degree. And it got me hooked on 190s and taught me never to spend silly money buying them from 'specialist' dealers again...

No 2 (bought unseen off ebay for £700) was an absolute corker. Run for 2.5 years and never put a foot wrong. The best used car buy I've ever made. Required one small bit of welding where one of the rustproofing plugs in the sill had started to rot. Ironically... And one of the springs had snapped when I bought it so put on a set of GSF lowering springs on for less than the price of one standard spring! All finished in a great autoshite colour scheme of Nutria Brown (super rare, one of only four ever made in that colour for one year only) with beige checked interior.

No 3 (bought sight unseen over the phone 250 miles away for £1100 because of the colour scheme and spec. I love a gamble...) was run for a year and a half. No problems whatsoever aside from another small bit of welding near a jacking point.

No 4, the current one has been a bit of a rollercoaster TBH. Mostly welding on all of the 190 problem areas, so nothing I wasnt prepared for. I havent got a welder but a fellow 190 owning mate has been using mine to hone his skills on, so has cost me squat to get done. And all the pigeon poo bits are in in the hidden areas... Have had to faff about with a few small things like new steering damper, changing the wrong springs the previous owner fitted for the correct sportline spec ones, doing autoshite-spec cosmetic repairs on a few panels. But the car has never failed to start and run and has never actually put me off the road. It's been a purely rolling resto. And at £550 off ebay, it's still been something of a bargain for a 2.6 with sportline pack and factory leather, as it came with 11 months ticket.

My recent shite has also included a 1977 Allegro, (an absolute hoot to own and drive and competely reliable), a 2001 MG ZR which was bought for £900 with 76,000 miles and had only done 1,000 miles on a brand new head and a new multi layer HG kit, and the current Astrashite (£995 for a 53 plate 1.6 SXi with 9 months ticket and 5 months tax). Completely happy with the lot of them considering how much I used to piss away on finance, depreciation, having to pay for dealer servicing, etc.

As much as I love the looks, the practicalness and the fuel economy of the Audi 100, I just keep itching for something more exciting. Its probably to do with the lack of other cars on the road but I am gagging to get a Jag XK6/8 or a Sabb 900 Turbo. Once I am driving around in the Lancia, GT6 or Imp hopefully this will pass as the car ticks all the boxes as a daily hack. Its just a little dull to drive and I want some excitement.
