A non-Fiat "Catch of the Day".

Quietly contemplating its former glory, in the grounds of one of Chiang Mai's 300+ temples.

Such a shame - the nail in it's coffin was probably it's broken windscreen.

More spots later...

Been away for a bit. Referring to a previous post of yours:

This explains Wifey, hopefully. She'll kill me for this, but you'll probably recognize a more Thai face than a traditional Chinese one.

Wow, what a great bunch of pics! You should be awarded a VIP suite on this site.

Great to see the great stickers on the cars - most of the ones here really make no sense whatsoever - just a collection of randomly selected words from the dictionary. Best I have ever seen is this:

Those Fiats are great, especially the second picture which is a 125.My dad had one of these in 1970.It was a 1968 model reg LJA250F and by its 4th birthday it was already showing signs of rust (not that susprising). He traded it in for a 1972 Datsun 100A, hence the attraction to this particular car.He very nearly bought a Fiat 127 instead, the deciding factor was that Datsun could supply a car with immediate delivery.Had that been the case i`m almost certainly would be driving a Fiat 127 now.Nostalgia is a powerful thing. :) This thread is becoming increasingly interesting. It is great that we have Shiters posting from these far flung places. :)

Thank you for the comments guys, I really like to hear 'em.

:D

Hey, ChinaTom, good to have you back.

Thanks for the map. It explains things well, perhaps because it could be

100 years old, maybe more. It shows how far Siam (Thailand) extended

to the east, into what is now Laos and especially Cambodia. It also shows

a tribal area in what must be in north Vietnam now. Your wife must be

from right on the Viet border. Her first language is probably related to

Khmer (Cambodian)? The main influences on the Thai language historically

were Khmer and Sanskrit (from India). The script is based on Khmer

characters, but is also related (bizarrely) to Sinhalese of Sri Lanka!

(Off topic, but an interesting subject - for me at least.)

I like maps, too. I inherited the ability to explore maps for hours on end

from my father. He has a sizable archive back in Yorkshire.

Your GLW is a pretty young lady. Her face could be Thai, but her strong

jawline isn't shared by many natives of this part of the country.

My wife is half Dutch, so doesn't look typically Thai. She has a straighter,

narrower nose with a raised bridge, and European-style eyelids. She

cosiders herself Thai. She looks at this thread sometimes, so if I put her

pic up, I wouldn't live long enough to post any more shite for you!

This one's great, CT:

"ASTONISHINGLY FEROCIOUS"

Proudly announcing it's a wolf in sheep's clothing.

What is the little white shite-box, by the way?

I'm still on the look-out for more random slogans on motors, but they

take rather more spotting than shite, because the stickers tend to be

smaller than the cars! I'll post 'em as I get 'em. One from Yesterzzz:

:?

No post yesterday - my photobox account was playing up, so I put the

Fiats up this a.m. to make up.

I'm with you, MrReRi.

I have a soft spot for shite-vintage Fiats, but these are too close to classic

status and older than I am, so all I know is they are Fiats and little more!

(I once had a Lancia Y10 1100cc, a Panda 4x4 999cc, and fettled my

sister's Uno Fire. Loved them.)

I think we can enjoy seeing shite around as much as anyone, even if we

don't know everything about it, right?

The Beta was the first and only Lancia I've noticed here.

I clocked it over the back wall of a temple. Temples seem to be the

equivalent of SL's shite-spotting treasure troves that are Lidl/Aldi car

parks. In town here, the temples have large yards and the small houses

all around often have no parking space, so people park up their shite for

the monks to watch over. Usually, I can go in and wonder about unnoticed.

A few of more yesterday's temple spots, starting with the drift numpties:

Spotted a little 70s Mazda 1300 5dr wagon going the other way, too.

Gutted I wasn't quick enough to snap it

^ :?: Is that a Maz 1000 saloon in that last pic? People around; I didn't venture.

Thanks again for the comments, shite-lovers.

What the? Gangster Merc with doriftu inspired non-matching rims and guard rooster? I like it!

Any idea what's behind the Merc? Looks split-window->old US pickup?

Last one looks like a Mazda 1000/1300 with some rear end restyling?

They're 1300/1500 -near impossible to distinguish, and an 1100d. The 'r' is the later boxier model (made until recently in India as the Padmini -taxi) and the 'd' is the earlier model with suicide doors. How do I know? Cos I own at least 1 of each of them! How sad is that!!!

Ah, I see I have to upgrade my 1100 knowledge a bit... although with all the NSU, Neckar (or are those two the same?) and Seat versions I don't think I'll ever know which is which :D

You just had me scrutinizing all my angles of the Merc for something I missed, but there was nothing else so exciting there.

Look again ^ It's the reflection of the eaves of the roof of the building on the screen - I see what you mean, looking at the small pic.

^ See the LPG filler?

All the cars around are the all-too-common 90s/noughties pick-up based vehicles.

That one near the driver's door is maybe a new Navara?? judging by the mirror.

The one with the white hen guarding it is a Ford Ranger (or Everest SUV).

Directly behind the Benz is an old Hilux, and in front of that is an Isuzu "THE GOLDEN DRAGON POWER" or similar.

I’m rather amused, proud even, that the concept of spotting in Attleborough Lidl car park has been thought about in Thailand. It was rubbish there today, but on the subject of appreciating things we don’t know much about I did have a pleasant chat with the owner of a nicely tatty Citroen Acadiene van that was parked around the corner (to be seen on my thread soon, long overdue an update).Keep them coming KJ!

Nigel B...

Thanks for the Fiat info. I keep going back to my monster-in-law's street

to get a baby-blue suicide door model, spoilt only by it's perspex windows.

She will be mine, oh yes...

stoterstangen90...

There are every age and shape of honda step-thrus here. This week I have

been mostly spotting shite with four wheels, but if this is your cuppa, watch this space.

SpottedLaurel...

Good to hear from you again.

I'm so glad your enjoying my thread - I loved yours - a true inspiration, sir!

I look forward to your next update.

Hi KJ, you're correct about the viet border location and the Khmer language. We sometimes watch the Thai tele channels when we are in Yunnan province, and she understands a lot of it.That silly little car is a Geely - a copy of a Charade. The sticker actually reads ASTONISHINGLY FEROCLOUS - I had assumed he meant ferocious, but can't rule out the possibility of a ferrous connection. Anything is possible here! "Hey, this baby has a surprisingly high iron content - iron of a particularly savage nature" I am itching to get over to Vietnam to see what delights that place offers - plenty I'm sure.Due for a trip to Thailand next April - I'm pretty sure your area has plenty of sugar cane, and if so, we'll have to hook up for a beer and shite session.CT

China Tom...

The Thais also often miss-spell (miss-copy) and miss-punctuate their

"Tinglish" with quite comical results. I've seen loads, but it's proving to

be a mission when I go looking with the camera.

I've not been to Vietnam, you probably know more than I do about the

place. Should be interesting, though... remember to take your camera!

As far as we know there is little sugar grown in the north, I'm afraid. I

know it's huge in the central planes. Here, the main crops are rice and

lychee-type fruit trees, and further into the hills, mostly vegetables. I

believe the main sugar refiners are in the provinces around Bangkok.

But if you make it across here, it would be great to get together and wrap

ourselves around a beer or two. Bring the wifey?

April is the main holiday season in Thailand, and Chiang Mai is at the

centre of the traditional new year festival (Songkran). It takes place in

the 2nd-3rd weeks of April and involves a lot of water-throwing (and

alcohol consumption). One of the greatest festivals in the word,

apparently - everyone should experience it at least once.

Book your hotel well in advance!

Hopefully I won't be teaching a summer course then, and if you need

hotels/car rent in Chiang Mai, we're happy to help.

stoterstangen

That's a nice pic of your bike.

when I was about 10, for Christmas my father took me outside and on the

bike trailer were two of these (70cc) in blue. One had bent forks, and the

other had had an engine fire. So I built myself my present, and used it

around the farm with it's hilarious leading-link suspension and bald tyres.

The first of many such toys from the scrap-yard...

What's that new pic in your signature? A goon in a riced Carlton, tailgating?

Hey Hirst, Michiel and other Daishatsu fans: Apart from these few

already posted, we haven't had so many of the little j-boxes yet.

I've been hoarding them, so now it's time for a Daihatsu binge!

First, the Miras. They're plentiful here, the most common very small car.

There are a few different shapes, all based on this basic one:

Posted Image

They're all 850cc 3cyl, I believe. No fancy 4x4 turbos here.

Most have a fiberglass back on. This is the most common shape, with

back seats in it:

Posted Image

^That was the first picture I took on my first shite-spotting excursion!

Posted Image

^ (Random slogan "Top Panel" :o )

These "Mira Mint"s are a bit more rounded and frumpy-looking.

They're the only full tin-top model - were these an export model? Or maybe a 'Knock Down Kit'

Posted Image

Posted Image

I've seen a few with these coupe-style backs stuck on:

Posted Image

And even a wheelchair conversion look-alike! (But too small.)

Ideal for the dry-cleaners who own this one:

Posted Image

Extra-cab (with tiny bench seat)

Posted Image

Posted Image

^I like this shape^ :D Well-balanced.

Extra-cab plus hard-top!

Posted Image

And finally, these look like they should have a longer wheelbase, but I

think it's the same. The back of the body looks stretched out, with the

back wheel too far forward in the arch...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Very useful city-shite!

Hirst, you have one of these, right?

Posted Image

^ Very rare, maybe a special import, like the odd Perodua Nippa I've seen.

There seems to be no Daihatsus newer than the Applause, Hijets and

Miras. Maybe that's because Toyota are now selling lower end stuff here,

such as this on the left:

Posted Image

^Avanza, sold as "Daihatsu Xenia" in some markets. Basic but modern, RWD.

Some older ones?

The classic noisy, smokey 2-stroke tuk-tuk:

Posted Image

This is a typical one except for the roof and seats (usually black), and

normally they say "THAILAND" on the back, not "DAIHATSU".

They're made here in the provinces (for taxis) to old Kei-car plans, so

I've read. ^See the LPG tank? But don't be fooled - they're not clean!

Posted Image

^ A few honest little Hijets running about.

Also good to see some Charades:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

^ At the school where I work.

On unusual Honda wheels:

Posted Image

Posted Image

^ Ill-proportioned saloon shite.

Is this for real: :?: If so, it gets "Catch of the Day"! 8)

Posted Image

Posted Image

So that's my take on baby-Ds in Thailand.

What do you reckon?

What a haul! I believe those weird shape Miras were built under license outside of Japan and I don't think Japan got any of those apart from the normal hatchback shape (and the Walkthrough van). The Coupe back is baffling. That Mira Classic is what I've got, except mine is the turbo version. They're quite sought-after in Japan and carry a hefty price tag (in used Kei-car terms), so whoever owns that one must be a Daihatsu maniac. The white Charade is a weird one, I think it's just an ordinary CX with stickers made up for it - dubious.

Glad you like them fellas!

I hadn't noticed these two had different light clusters:

Posted ImagePosted Image

I think I prefer the look of the turquoise one.

Thank you for the 3 door ones! I don't think I've ever seen one anywhere.

Here's that Dutch one again:

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

^ What a strange collection of shapes in this last angle,

with that super-shite porthole and square filler flap!

Such a shame here that we get such a narrow range of each model here.

It seems if a 4/5 door version is available, that's all that is ever sold in Thailand.

Often 2/3drs are more interesting shapes.

The Miras are an exception with different shapes around. I think they were

made here, otherwise they wouldn't be so numerous. The fiberglass tops

are made by different independant accessory companies, and are probably

available from the ever-popular options shops, as well as the showrooms.

Posted Image

^ Mira Classic

Hirst... the Thais are not a particularly discerning bunch as far as choosing

their motors, they're unimaginative and usually un-aware of standards,

trends, and availability elsewhere.

But in Bangkok, there are a few grey importers bringing in some

interesting models, and the yuppies and rich kids go there for something

cute or different-looking. Usually these models are three or four times the

price of similar models widely available in showrooms, due to the crazy

taxes imposed on built-up cars.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Off topic guys--

I'm no expert with 'pooters, but this might help some of you...

Some websites don't make it easy to copy or save their pictures, but

often we might want to keep an image ourselves (strictly for our

personal records, of course, due to copyright issues). A colleague told

me to google "Snagit" and download the 30 day free trial. This program

enables us to capture anything showing on the screen at all, you can

save any size or shape "capture" as an image in "my pictures" etc.

Some online photo accounts accept the pics, others might not...

Hope it helps, but remember to keep it legal.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally, what is this...?

Posted Image

(pic taken at a distance, Honda Chaly in the background)

Is it one of these baby Toyotas?

Posted Image

Posted Image

If so, it looks like a relative of this cutie:

Posted Image

Posted Image

^ Is that what you call "Frenched" headlights? Just seen that.

Also, the fresh air vent seems to pop up from the scuttle when required!

Is that right?

They look similar to the Compagnos to me. I like 'em!

That's all for now..

I think I prefer the look of the turquoise one.

The blue one is the first version (G10) and the other is the facelift type. The first type had round headlights too and the facelift square like that Dutch car. Here's the front end of our '79 Charade..

Posted Image

One thing that's really bizarre, that up until now I hadn't noticed is the the coupe version having a square fuel filler. Oddly the saloon has a round one!
