Oriental Offerings - Reincarnated

Next-gen Cefiro was just a rebadged QX and hence went FWD, whereas the A31 model like you saw evolved from the R32 Skyline/C33 Laurel gene pool I believe, think they usually have RB-series straight-six engines hence their popularity in drifting circles (ho ho). The only RWD Cefiro I’ve seen here in recent years belonged to a drift-twerp who came to look at the RWD starlet I had for sale (fortunately he didn’t buy it).

Thanks SL, it was your thread that brought me toAutoshite.I've been out most of the morning, and snapped well over 100 shots! They're uploading now. Coming soon... I've been in the poorer 'burbs of town, so no more Cefiros today. I'll keep my eyes open, though. I think I saw your pic of that "drift-twerp"s car in "Spotted's Spottings", parked on the verge at your place.

while your out and about krujoe could you pick me up a lambretta and ship it to blighty for me the ones on flea bay cost the earth lol

Not many Lambrettas here at all at all - no more than Eng. But Vespas can be seen all over, all ages and conditions. I'll get some pics. But they're not cheap - they sell for about the same as a brand new Honda / Yam step-thru apparently, and at that price they're not mint. The rich "scene"uni students love em. Them and old beetles.

Belmonts built by Daewoo were known as the Racer in Asian markets. They were facelifted to become the Nexia we all know and love. Many have front fogs here, and they ALL look like they were tacked on by the same Halfords mechanic.

That's right, I remember. As for this part of Thailand 80-90% of those Belmonts I see are Opels, other are Dwoo Racers. I have seen 1 or 2 3door Mk2 Astras badged as Daewoos, then a few facelifted Nexias 3, 4, and 5 doors, I think. Usually in that dark met green.

How are you getting on with the Thai language - you must be picking it up after so much time. All I can do is Tham Ha for a packet of cigs. Wifey can speak it as she is Zhuang minority - the historical far reaches of the Kingdom of Siam, now GuangXi Province, China. Beautiful place, northern Thailand. Maybe you can bring that Mirafiori back??

I've not studied the language, but I've picked it up as I've gone along. I'm nowhere near fluent, though. Just enough to almost get by: ordering food/beer, shopping at the market etc. I can read a little bit, just names and labels, that kind of thing. But don't get me started on the strange script here... :? Your wife can speak Thai? Or Chinese... confused. I had my wife and her friend arguing over where your's might be from. There are loads of different minoritiy "hill tribes" around here in the north, all with their own distinct language and culture. Their ways are becoming more diluted now, however.Old shite is not cheap here. Anything with 4 wheels and even slightly roadworthy (ie starts and stops, goes 'round corners) sells for the thick end of 1000 pounds, and would need almost the same spending to pass a UK MOT. There are a number of reasons but I reckon low labour costs (for repairs/servicing) are the most important. Also, cars are a luxury/status symbol, and entry-level motors are in high demand amongst the masses. Anything European commands a premium (perceived higher quality, even old Fiats and Citroens). So bringing owt back would usually not be worth it. Unless you found a complete wreck somewhere, had it reconditioned here to a high standard, then sent back ready for its MOT.Thanks for your questions (sorry for the long reply!)More pics coming soon, waiting for the ever-so-slow upload.

Seems there's more of this kind of old skool euro shite there then there is in Europe!Any R14s or Ritmos?

Yep, there's plenty of tat about if you trawl the right neighbourhoods. The only Renos I've seen are the 9s and the occasional 21.Renault's attempt at cracking this market seem to have shrivelled up and died after selling a few of those. finding parts is a pain, so I'm told.Rimtos / Stradas? No. Just a few random models. They seem few and far between. The newest I've seen are the Mk1 Puntos. No Lancias, but a few pretty Alpha 156s. They are usually in front of the Alpha garage waiting for bits to fix 'em. The odd older Alpha, too. Spotted one yesterday. (Looking sad behind a garage!) :?

I spoke to an another English expat today, he mentioned the old Renault 20s/30s. There is at least one trundling around, and I'm sure I've seen it now I think. I'll really have to keep my eyes peeled, coz I know how some of you love 'em!

Nope, never seen any 145s / 146s here.

I think Alphas don't cope well with the heat/humidity/dust here.

Time for some pics, but where should I start?

OK, some for Mr Bo11ox:twisted:

michiel : I'm not sure what that little white beauty is...

I just rode around a-clickin' and a-snappin' for your delectation.

Before I continue and while I remember...

Mk2 Craig, R Welfare and China Tom:

Before dinner, we went to the market and I saw a booted (4dr) Nexia-style Daewoo... on the bootlid: FANTASIA. I remember that now. (Guess what colour it was?!?!)

I can't remember what the Nexia hatches are called here... Racer/Fantasia/Nexia? Not that I take much notice of them. Not many about. There are more Esperos (the Mk2 Cav re-hash) around. They are probably the newest model commonly falling out of use. They must take a lot of keeping going in this climate, and it's not cheap to bring the parts in. One of my mother-in-law's ill-advised purchases here was one of these. The trim is SO flimsy - I'm scared to touch anything inside.

I looked out for that gold Belmont (it lives on our street). It has been out all day. When I see it, I'll get a shot of it's boot badges.

ChinaTom, Mr RR

Look what I got for you...

Apologies for the dodgy pics (he was shiftin' - my zoom is slow)

Brilliant!I've just been through the entire chaos that is my J-tin-pictures archive (a couple of thousand...) but I couldn't find a single rear shot of a Compagno estate, judging from the side-on pics I think it is one though. If I could swap an organ for it I would!

Sorry folks, in all todays excitement, I forgot all about the piss-tarp challenge.

Posted Image

This might make it easier? A front view.

(OMG Michiel - I think I know what your baby is...)

I'm 99% sure the piss-tarp pick-up is closely related to this:

Posted Image

Which, I'm 99% sure, is one of these:

Posted Image

I'm 99% sure of the make but I have to say I don't know the model

Once you see the front of the red one, I'm 99% sure someone will come up with it's full name and code!

:)

I did try, but to no avail.

A shonky shot of the dash:

Look what I found when I googled “daihatsu compagnoâ€Â…

This site seems to be a great reference for car photos:

http://www.motorbase.com/profiles/vehicle/picture.ehtml?i=316;p=810391594

The Campagno drop-top is a handsome little thing, isn’t it?

This one carries technical drawings of the exterior of almost every model you can think of. Some even have dimensions.

May be interesting for some of you:

http://carblueprints.narod.ru/images/daihatsu/daihatsu-compagno-wagon-1965.gif

And I thought it would be rude not post this link from a classic car show. The Campagno saloon is nice but I particularly like the Mini Pickup Coupe hardtop thing!

I hope those links work for you, if not you can do the copy/paste thing.

Time now for some more randomness.

Thanks for the links, and the pint *virtual burp*, just what I needed.

And now for my health's sake STOP POSTING! This made my heart stop just like the Compagnos did:

Mazda 800/Familia, mid to late sixties. Big fat WANT. Though a 3-door wagon would be even cooler, but seeing how this thread develops you will probably post one in a few hours and my heart will need another jump start.

All that goes for here too, except 11:30am, oh and seventies J-tin for me!

Millions around here, though.

A bit of a modern - not quite shite yet. Oh, and take no notice of the wheels, you'll only be lead astray.

Good luck on this one.

OK then, a little more help.

I've only ever seen one motor with the name in Thai script. Here it is:

Posted Image

It's the same model under the tarp. ChinaTom: Maybe your Mrs can help? Perhaps FordPoplier also has a slight advantage...

These cars are so common here that I was sure there would be one in the background of my spotting pics -- and there is -- on page one. Have a look!

MrRR: Happy 2000th post day to you!

I have a present for you:

Very rare here. I hope you like it.

I can just make out the green R19 Chamade behind the Fiat^^ and sorry, it's not one of them under the CPT. (I forgot to mention the R19s I have seen when we were talking about Renaults in Thailand.)

The tarp car is closely related to the purple car next to the R19, and it is one of these... next to SL's favourite, the Cefiro:

Any ideas?

More big Nissans later with any luck...

Bit of detective work has come up with this:Toyota Soluna?

Top man!!! :D A virtual pint of top shelf to you, dear sir!The Soluna was an Asean-only model, with something very similar sold in the US with a Tercel badge. There are loads here - an Escort equivalent. My latest upload is complete, some big Jap beauties on the way! :) KJ.

Thanks for the 155, some others here should like that too (Mr Bo11ox, Pogweasel, poss others).

Well I did scan that car next to the Cefiro but it didn't match the cut out photo you posted showing the badge written in Thai, I looked at the shape / colour of the rear lights & found no match! :?:?:

Ahaaaa (Allan Partridge style)... What's thrown you is that Solunas had two different back light clusters... the first with smoked over red:

Posted Image

Here are the two styles, earlier on the left:

Posted Image

But later (right), they were facelifted (I imagine) to match the then new Corolla:

Posted Image

I captured three generations together here, the newest on the left (Toyota Soluna Vios), that was the purple car next to the R19 behind the Bronze fiat!

We were renting the car on the right to tour some of the remoter provinces in the north. (As exciting as a food processor, but just as suitable for its job.)

From Solunas to Cefiros...

A31 The first generation:

^ Most are modded to shit.

A32 Gen 2:

A33 Third Gen - looking more grown-up and much less sporty:

Posted Image

(Sorry, can't find a front view just now.)

While we're on with big, modern-ish Nissan saloons...

Posted Image

How pleased I was to get this for you today.

Posted Image

Rather unusual, a bit 90s Jag / BMW 7series don't you think?

Posted Image

And none of these in the UK, are there?

Posted Image

A rather dull-looking machine. Is it a Bluebird?

Posted Image

This one has some more imaginative details:

Posted Image

Nissan Presea (how do I pronounce that?)

Posted Image

^ Rather charming with its concave headlights.

I think it has frameless windows, too. 8)

That's enough to be going on with.

Oh, before I go to bed, (6/7 hrs time difference), something different:

My "Catch of the Day"
