Thoughts about the white estate in front of the Commer?

It could be a FIAT 128 estate, but the only ones I can find are two door, and yours looks like a four door; is there a handle below the pillar? Which is sloping on yours. So maybe it's not...

The little green car (in front of the 'Austin 1100' (many variants are availbale)) going the other way could be an Autobianchi 112...

I think the white estate is a Fiat 125 and first thoughts about the nearby pale green car are that it's a Lloyd Alexander estate.

Fiat 125s and 128s were merely science fiction when that pic was taken.

It's a 1300/1500 Familiare.

Other oddities are the Mercedes Universal by Miesen, '63 Chevrolet Chevy II, Lloyd Alexander Kombi,

Steyr-Puch 650, Goggomobil, Skoda Octavia and Kässbohrer Setra S6. At least for me they are.

Given the era of the card I'm a bit surprised there isn't more British tat.

Just to add the final detail to this, albeit irelevant to the post card, there was a 128 5 dr estate in Argentina called the Rural.

The green car with the white roof in front of the red Mini is a Lloyd Alexander Kombi.

I have yet to spot anything that wasn't around in 1963, so that's most likely when the pic was taken.

Thanks. Can't recall seeing the estate version before, that semi-fastback rear end is quite distinctive.

Was British stuff popular in Austria back then?

Was it ever! Austria was in the EFTA before joining the EU(SSR). In fact, like the UK, it still is.

Hence UK chod wasn't liable to the 33% import tax levied on EEC tat back then, making British offerings quite attractive price wise.

British cars remained popular in .at until the Brits decided to destroy their car industry in the Seventies.

I remember visitng Austria in the early 80's and being amazed bytyhe amount of Hillman Avengers there, but, if I remember correctly, they were badged as 'Sunbeams'.

On a later visit (in the late 80's) very little UK chod except for Escort vans.

All Rootes Group cars exported to Austria were Sunbeam badged. There were only Sunbeam dealers, too.

So there were Sunbeam Imps, Vogues, Minxes, Avengers, Hunters and of course Sunbeam Rapiers and Alpines.

This was in stark contrast to BMC, which sold their cars always with their domestic badges.

On a later visit (in the late 80's) very little UK chod except for Escort vans.

Like in their homeland, by that time, the British car makers had thoroughly alienated their customers.

The last strong sellers from the UK in .at were the Minis and of course the Land Rovers,

but the latter lost their popularity once Steyr-Puch started making Jeeps.

I do recall seeing lots of Lada Niva's, one instance that stands out was bumping into one on top of a very remote peak several miles away and thousands of feet above the nearest road.

A Consul and what I believe is an A35 in Vienna.

And yes, that's a '57 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop.

I think the three motorcycles on the left are a Puch moped in front (MS50 series), NSU Quickly moped behind, although I can't see the leading link front suspension because the MS50's handgrip is in the way, and possibly a Puch RL125 scooter next to it judging by the headlamp position and the angle of the spare wheel.  A35??   If it is the car behind the no entry sign, my eyes are not telling me anything  :-D .  Without seeing the back window I would not know whether it was an A30 or A35 in any case.

These postcards from all contributors are superb and often test my recognition and eyesight capabilities to the maximum.
