There’s an idea: Regular Wheels on the Shadow to be fitted to the Citroen SM

And the Lone Star Imperial wants saving from the pile

I’d be surprised if the axles would fit the thicker tyres/rim combo.

It’s because a customer car came in needing one and due to factory supply delays they had to remove from this donor. Probably.

Just pulled a box of older Vanguards out from the depths of the spare room. It is interesting to see the quick development of these early models and the transition from English built to Chinese built.

DSCF4004.JPG.80ebb1964efd976a2fc3725a6283bb20.JPG

Very early, and possibly the first ever Vanguards VA1000 Navy Blue Ford Anglia

DSCF3908.JPG.8861fd774abcd481eea92b01cc6e87e7.JPG

No jewelled lights on these older models. Also cast in wipers at the base of the screen.

DSCF3909.JPG.7f60318f185c8c5e221e1db5bb930605.JPG

No number plates.

DSCF3910.JPG.84951585e73148b6aeaf71cebdc04e86.JPG

DSCF3911.JPG.728929348678dcf4de0ae36f10b243dc.JPG

The reason there are no plates on the is there is a small sheet of decals, along with the wing mirrors and a collector's card.

DSCF3912.JPG.6db002dd6e924213f421bc58ec197569.JPG

The reverse of the card shows that the Anglia was No.1 in a series of 42.

DSCF3913.JPG.f36e739e7ecaba32c9f0db521e0e74d3.JPG

This model was released in 1997.

DSCF3917.JPG.308de0e27f9a0db2342128c2a7b01be3.JPG

This example has two collector's cards in it. One show a Post Office Engineers van which I do not think was ever released.

DSCF3921.JPG.1298eeb0f2b4dda8b889cc4996a27920.JPG

The card for the Engineers van has the same numbering as the other.

and Ford Consul Classic. Both had clear cast plastic head lamps.

DSCF3936.JPG.e0f0a521bbeca50bd13f1d7db906283b.JPG

Both issued in 1999 which was the last year for Made in England models. Also by then the X of Y series numbers had been dropped.

DSCF3931.JPG.ac1421d14bf5a130d31772cf044e178b.JPG

They still had cast wipers.

DSCF3939.JPG.0a5ba03462ec9d7916495fd2a5c5952e.JPG

One of the very few Made in England models that came in a perspex box was the black Hillman Imp VA26006.

DSCF3945.JPG.fa4ebccf8a675ed22e9598e88e2dea95.JPG

DSCF3947.JPG.eb46195efd209633d621e4f7d47aa9af.JPG

It also came with loose mirrors and a numbered certificate.

DSCF3948.JPG.5fb944c789099a9145c1d7515132446f.JPG

There were a couple of limited edition sets made at Enfield, this Panda Car set being one of them.

DSCF3989.JPG.38c0ad6dafe477bf5724a2accbf87c32.JPG

Mine has a slightly interesting number.

DSCF3998.JPG.97f91f78aaf928395e5027b29fa5310f.JPG

1998 release.

DSCF3999.JPG.2eff1472f692393ced22e6b05b5dfa45.JPG

Lots of number plates and mirrors to play with.

DSCF4001.JPG.4618147adc2b2753d962e4013393789d.JPG

DSCF4002.JPG.dfda1fe72f14912cf35a88fc37ff97d8.JPG

One of the first of the Chinese built was VA54000 Morris Oxford Green. It has jewelled lamps and photo etch wipers.

DSCF3961.JPG.e8ce2d53748f8dbfc3482ee411f9df21.JPG

It also has tampo printed number plates and non-cast door handles.

DSCF3963.JPG.a1d6d9297b747e3813bac60b198cd6ed.JPG

Still with detached mirrors. Release date is 2000.

DSCF3965.JPG.1ee3295a38edfdaa97a57869690a2ece.JPG

Another year 2000 release was VA06300 Morris Marina Teal Blue. Note it has a ref number that starts with a 0. Again jewelled lamps and thin wipers.

DSCF3952.JPG.3da40812725c0795a6a5e8dc5658913a.JPG

More tampo detailing all round.

DSCF3954.JPG.02908672ab7f207f9f486a043a5c7572.JPG

This has the Tax Disc that was used as the numbered certificate on later issue. This models ref number ends in a 0, so it was the first of this casting and was not a limited production item.

DSCF3956.JPG.8a64ac948685bea7c3e5f287bf2ccdbc.JPG

One of the best castings from this era has to be the Vauxhall PA Cresta.

DSCF3981.JPG.fcebeb724235f724ae8e7304a21088d7.JPG

DSCF3983.JPG.06c3f04f994d2c75cfb028b83283b0d0.JPG

This was released in 2001.

DSCF3985.JPG.803b694166673b3482db19f8123803fe.JPG

DSCF3986.JPG.37e31eacd2fcc8db5a1d747ba71ca85e.JPG

Here is the first Allegro release VA45000 Harvest Gold

DSCF3877.JPG.98211a1e6ca1e26d00826e06f1279f5b.JPG

This has the Tax Disc and door mirrors.

DSCF3880.JPG.07ebdb9eb180602f1d6daff288f60289.JPG

The second issue was the Allegro Panda Car VA45001. This has a different grille to the first issue showing the lengths that Vanguard went to get thing correct.

DSCF3884.JPG.83946477a35e7fa48a1608affcef2831.JPG

On the reverse of the Tax Disc is the individual edition number.

DSCF3888.JPG.16e890fbc203e766c892faf533160838.JPG

I think these early Vanguards are under valued compared to the later ones. It is probably because most are of older cars which are now falling from favour with those interested in classic cars, and that they were produced in far larger numbers than the more recent issues. The quality though, especially of teh early Chinese made one, is just as good as the ones made now. By the way, a couple of these had price labels from JM Toys and Model Zone stuck on when I dug them out. The price was £9.95. Have we really had almost 300% inflation in the last 25 years?

It was the damage to the plastic bumpers compared to the paint that made me think it had been redone.

I should look out for the correct wheels I suppose, anyone need a set of Minilites for a Hunter?

I found out a thing. Matchbox Jeep Gladiator, one of the first Matchbox to have opening doors

Matchbox 71b Jeep Gladiator

Some just have the manufacturer and model info on the base

Matchbox 71b Jeep Gladiator

Some have a patent number

Matchbox 71b Jeep Gladiator

Well that patent is for the little spring that holds the doors open and also makes them snap shut and stay there.

First car to feature opening doors was the Mercedes 220, and this also has bases with and without patent numbers after this improvement was introduced. I only have the pre-patent type hence showcasing the gladiator

Matchbox 53b Mercedes 220 S.E.

I expect so yes. The one I took apart had no number and no spring

I do have a kid- paint one with patent number that needs something doing with it...

You can see the retaining spring here

But not on the earlier one

Just pulled a box of older Vanguards out from the depths of the spare room. It is interesting to see the quick development of these early models and the transition from English built to Chinese built.

Very early, and possibly the first ever Vanguards VA1000 Navy Blue Ford Anglia

No jewelled lights on these older models. Also cast in wipers at the base of the screen.

No number plates.

The reason there are no plates on the is there is a small sheet of decals, along with the wing mirrors and a collector's card.

The reverse of the card shows that the Anglia was No.1 in a series of 42.

This example has two collector's cards in it. One show a Post Office Engineers van which I do not think was ever released.

and Ford Consul Classic. Both had clear cast plastic head lamps.

Both issued in 1999 which was the last year for Made in England models. Also by then the X of Y series numbers had been dropped.

They still had cast wipers.

One of the very few Made in England models that came in a perspex box was the black Hillman Imp VA26006.

It also came with loose mirrors and a numbered certificate.

There were a couple of limited edition sets made at Enfield, this Panda Car set being one of them.

Mine has a slightly interesting number.

Still with detached mirrors. Release date is 2000.

DSCF3965.JPG.1ee3295a38edfdaa97a57869690a2ece.JPG

Another year 2000 release was VA06300 Morris Marina Teal Blue. Note it has a ref number that starts with a 0. Again jewelled lamps and thin wipers.

DSCF3952.JPG.3da40812725c0795a6a5e8dc5658913a.JPG

More tampo detailing all round.

This has the Tax Disc that was used as the numbered certificate on later issue. This models ref number ends in a 0, so it was the first of this casting and was not a limited production item.

One of the best castings from this era has to be the Vauxhall PA Cresta.

This has the Tax Disc and door mirrors.

The second issue was the Allegro Panda Car VA45001. This has a different grille to the first issue showing the lengths that Vanguard went to get thing correct.

On the reverse of the Tax Disc is the individual edition number.

Thanks for sharing, I had a fair few of these. I especially love the Anglia, although I got mine on Easter 1996? Vanguards was such an exciting idea back in the mid 1990s and certainly had added charm over the Corgis at the time.

I think there was a big jump in quality over the millennium as the Allegro and Marina will testify.

Sadly, out of all the early ones I had, only the Marina remains, although I do have a later green issue of the Allegro 1300 Deluxe.

I quite like those early Vanguards too. Some nice models that still stand up very well even when sat alongside more modern models.
I’ve got a couple of Marina’s, teal blue like my grandad’s he had in Cyprus and the taxi version. A couple of Morris Minor saloon’s and the really old traveler.

And these.

P5, although I’m not sure this is quite as old as some of the others?

Anglia van. Picked up cheap as it’s got a few bits missing.

Rover P4. Again, a cheapie as it’s got missing bits and chips to the paint.

Somewhere I’ve got the Reliant Regal van in Nottingham water board livery too.
