Shite in Miniature II

The kit is, as was common practice with US manufacturers, based on the promo tool, which was a 2-door hardtop..................

Thanks for the info. Luckily my knowledge of the real thing is somewhat limited, so I'm just happy to have a generic '70s American 4dr kit. I don't think there are many others?

I have a Rolamatics Range Rover with an actual rotating rotary beacon on the roof

On another subject, I was in Tesco last night and noticed that they are now stocking Majorette cars. These are the first 1/64 scale cars that I have seen in years which have opening features. I'm not counting Siku as they are too dear at 4 quid.

That's interesting. They've had them in Morrisons for the last 2 or 3 years, but it's always been the same mix of cars.Which cars did you see?

I've built a couple of the Jo-Han Plymouths in the dim and distant: 1960 station wagon and 1967 sedan, both coming with a vast array of police accessories.  However I can't think of anything that came between them and the Monaco, or between the Monaco and the Robocop Taurus.  There will be something, and I would imagine Junkman knows the answer!

There should also be some more current models.  I have (unbuilt yet) a 1996 Crown Vic in Tennessee spec, and I would expect the 98-on CV to appear in someone's range.  Bathtub Caprice?  Current Dodge Charger?  Don't know, but likely, I suspect.

Am engaging "thinning down" or "being more selective" mode on the 1:18 front, if for no other reason than them taking up a lot of space.

I started by wanging this one back onto eBay, with what I thought was a pretty thorough listing.

It's a model which is in plentiful supply, though discontinued. They're routinely listed, boxed and complete for £30+ BIN. I thought I'd possibly do alright with a low-ish start bid, so I went in at £9.99 with a sensible £4 postage.

Sold for £9.99. One bid. Wasn't really worth selling. Thank god I fucking hated this model from day one.

The Jo-Han Plymouth Police Pursuit Fury is a 1968, not a 1967.

There were quite a few four door promos and kits. Sadly some of the promos never made it to kit form.

I don't think I can come up with a comprehensive list, but those come to mind instantly:

SMP/AMT 1958 Chevy Bel Air sedan and wagon - promos only

SMP/AMT 1959 Chevy Bel Air six window sedan, 1959 Impala Sportsroof sedan and Brookwood wagon, same for 1960. Only the '60 wagon was later available as a kit in the Jr. Craftsman series

SMP/AMT 1960 and 1961 Valiant promos and kits

AMT 1960 Corvair promo and kit

AMT 1960 Mercury Comet promo

AMT 1961 - 1969 Lincolns were all available as promos and kits in hardtop as well as convertible form

AMT 1961 Buick Special wagon and Pontiac Tempest sedan - promos and kits

AMT 1962 Buick Special wagon - promo and kit

AMT 1962, 1963 and 1965 Chevrolet Nova wagon - promos and kits

AMT 1969 Ford Galaxie - kit only

AMT 1970 Ford LTD - promo and kit

AMT and Polar Lights 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor hearse "ECTO" - kits only

Jo-Han 1956 Plymouth Belvedere - promo and X-EL reissue in the 80s

Jo-Han 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959 Chrysler New Yorker and DeSoto Firedome/Fireflite - promos only, 1956es and 1959s also as X-EL reissues in the 80s

Jo-Han 1956 Pontiac - promo and X-EL reissue in the 80s

Jo-Han 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight - 1958 promo only, also as X-EL reissues in the 80s. All others were available as promos and kits

Jo-Han 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special - 1958 promo only, also as X-EL reissue in the 80s. All others were available as promos and kits

Jo-Han 1958 Rambler Cross Country Wagon, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966 Rambler four door Sedans, 1966 Rambler wagon - promos and kits

Jo-Han 1961 Olds F-85 wagon

Jo-Han 1966 Cadillac hearse and ambulance - kits only

Revell 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham and Ford Country Squire wagon - kits only

Revell 1962 Valiant, Dodge Dart 440 and Imperial - kits only

Revell 1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic and Impala SS - kits only

Hubley 1960, 1961 and 1962 Ford Galaxie sedan and Country Sedan (=wagon) - promos and kits

I bet there are loads more. Strictly speaking, one must also count the numerous kits of more door "Classic" era cars and the SUVs/Crew Cab Pick ups.

Also, there are countless resin transkits out there.

Not comprehensive, he says.....

And thank you, I couldn't remember offhand if it was 67 or 68.  I remember some of those you mentioned, but many came as surprises.  1962 Cadillac sedan?  I have to have one!

GLWTS....

anyone seen the hotwheels white mk1 transit "super van" can't find one.

I don't think you'll find one over here unless it's on eBay.It's not a regular car like you'll find in Sainsburys etc, these are more expensive "collectors" ranges which we only get a few of  :-(

Junkman's amended and corrected list of 1:25 scale American plastic promos and kits of more door sedans and station wagons.
Does not contain 2-door wagons!

Corrections in bold, additions in blue.

PMC 1955 Chevrolet 210 four door sedan - promo

PMC 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop sedan and wagon - promos

PMC 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air hardtop sedan and wagon - promos

PMC 1955 - 1958 Ford Country Sedan wagon (with Del Rio level trim) - promos and friction toys made from acetate

PMC 1958 Chevy Bel Air 4-door hardtop - promo

PMC 1959 Ford Country Sedan wagon - promo has interior and glass, plus "FordAire" emblem on tailgate. Toy version is styrene and doesn't warp, but has no interior/glass/FordAire emblem and one piece black wheels with hot stamped whitewalls.

PMC 1959 Impala 4-door sedan. Usually sold as a fire chief or police car toy with no glass/interior. Promo might exist, but must be v/rare if it does.

SMP/AMT 1958 Chevy Bel Air 4-door hardtop and wagon - promos

SMP/AMT 1959 Chevy Bel Air six window sedan, 1959 Impala Sportsroof sedan and Brookwood wagon, same for 1960. Only the '60 wagon was later available as a kit in the Jr. Craftsman series

AMT and Polar Lights 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor hearse "ECTO" - kits only

Revell 1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic and Impala SS - kits only

Revell 2006 Dodge Magnum SRT8 wagon (sorry, tourer. Wagon is sooo last century) - kit

Revell 2000-something Impala cop car - kit - this is the Holden based thing, later than the 90s Caprice/Impala SS

Hubley 1960, 1961 and 1962 Ford Galaxie sedan and Country Sedan (=wagon) - promos and kits

Hubley 1960 and 1961 Ford Fairlane four-door sedans - promos and kits

Lindberg 2006 Dodge Charger (street and police versions) - kits

Please note:

All pre-1960 and many pre-1963 promos and friction toys were made from acetate, which warps and sometimes shrinks badly. Thus these models are really only interesting for the hardcore collectors.

All plastic kits were made from styrene, which doesn't warp. A lot of post-1960 promos and friction toys were as well, some even earlier. These styrene models are more interesting for the modeller and started kits/slightly damaged models can be had for significantly less money than unbuilt kits/minters. Be prepared to pay some serious money for some of this stuff, though.

That's lush, and soooooooooooo close.... except it's the 1961 model, my car was a 1962.  The differences are minor, but would irritate me.  I have the old Dinky sedan which I restored many years ago in roughly a correct green, only to find when I bought a real one that was also green; but again it's a model of a 61.  That never stopped me displaying it on the dash though!

How on earth could I fuck this up?

Those two bottles of Pinot Noir must be at fault...

Besides, my '62 Caddy was a Devil convertible. Driftwood Beige (exactly like this promo) with brown interior.

Had it repainted in Saab Cardinal Red metallic and got some serious wad for it.

Oh, and do you know why they went from those quad horizontal taillights in 1961 back to the 'traditional' vertically stacked taillights in 1962?

Because the coachbuilders complained. They couldn't make the tailgates wide enough for '61 hearses and ambulances without botching the taillight pods.

Admit it, you always wanted to know this.

Whereas in 1962, this was no problem:

The 1961 onwards bulkhead was unsuitable for the long chassis, for reasons unknown to me.

All I know is that it was unsuitable for some reason, thus the Series 75 Limousines and chassis assemblies for outside coachbuilders retained the 1959/60 bulkhead through 1964,

complete with the "Vista Panoramic" windscreen.

One for the bus fans

Finally got round to photographing a specially commissioned model for my Mrs, one of the buses from where we work. It's a Haverhill machine and rarely ends up on the Bury towns, but driven the real thing plenty of times, and it's a nice example of a Haggis McPointer, and does 60 flat out.
