By the way, Corgi are still on their stupid path of pandering to fans of Fords. Of the latest 2023 releases shown on their site, only 1 of 13 is a non-Ford. It is a new colour for the Triumph Stag. They have announced that they are releasing a Red Astra Mk2 GTE, but the next two new castings are again Ford, Mk2 Capri (so they can release three car sets featuring all 3 marks) and the latest Mustang Coupe. They just are not listening to collectors who are bored to the back teeth of Fords.

Yep, it's a shame. Even if they're not prepared to spend the money on new tooling, there's existing tooling they could at least do some recolours of. I just can't understand why they've done another Mk2 Astra, when the Vauxhalls that  the collectors are screaming for are the MK3 Cavalier and Nova (castings that already exist). I can't see me getting that many again this year. I only got the Escort Cossie as it's a car I've wanted a model of for a while and the Escort MK2 Sport was in a colour scheme that interested me. I'll probably see what the Mk2 Capri ends up like, as I do think there is demand for a MK2 model and if they listen to the collectors and do a Minder version, it should do well.

As for the modern Fords, IMO they've pissed development costs up the wall, which they could have used on other castings. The Focus RS and ST may do well, apparently the blue RS is sold out already on pre-order, but there are only so many versions they'll be able to do of that casting.

I'm looking at Solido at the moment. Theyre currently doing a range of '80s and '90s European neo-classics, Citroen BX GTi, Pug 205 Dimma, Pug 306 S16, Golf MK2 Rallye, BMW E34 Alpina, Merc 560SEC AMG, all sorts. '80s and '90s retro/hot hatches is where all the interest is now apparently. Corgi could capitalise on this with new and existing castings but...

There's some interesting French stuff in that Solido range that has not been modelled very much.

I think the IXO and it's sister ranges Premium X, J-Collection and IST cover just about every modelling subject possible, apart from old British stuff.

Unfortunately* my favourite antique shop in Linlithgow has not closed down so I had to go in. He had a good selection of diecast on display. I was tempted by a 1.18 scale Polistil Porsche 959 but instead I just had my usual blether with the proprietor about Rovers.

This was in the Red Cross charity shop for £1.50 which is more like it.

Damaged screen but otherwise serviceable, I have the Superfast one from my childhood and I did used to have one as a kid which I badly repainted in Strathclyde orange and black, together with a knockoff Playart example.

I suspect in a way  they are listening to collectors.

Diecast auction prices have been on the rise since last year and anything Ford fetches top money. Dealers would not be paying those high prices, if they thought they wouldn't get there money back.

Fords fetch higher prices than any other mark, when retailing.

Corgi are just following the market. They are a business. They have too.

I think it’s tremendously boring when it’s just non stop Ford Transits etc but as above you run a business towards what your market research tells you and where the money is. I’m sure they could make a cracking Talbot Solara but it wouldn’t sell like a model of a Escort whatever. Boring I know but that’s how it is.

Tesco are definitely getting lots of 2023 Matchbox

BuM have got the second wave of the anniversary Hot Wheels in with the Porsche

Went to a VW show today, one seller with loads but almost all I either had, didn't want or were at scene tax prices. Did get a couple though

Not much of interest to be found out and about today: B&M have some Hot Wheels Flying Customs in, alongside their other premiums..

...but no price made me a bit chary, and the three left on the pegs just didn't quite interest me in the same way the VW Rabbit and Chevette did in the older range.

So, nah.

Poundland only had some of the 'orrible Speed Trapper trailers left.

And that was your lot - no Hot Wheels or anything.

Poundstretcher could have been interesting, with their Matchbox Working Rigs now HALF PRICE, but...

...empty pegs.

Still, this branch only had a handful left a fortnight ago - but the Belfast Castle Street branch had dozens last Friday, so might be worth a looksie on Monday...

There was this boxed (but opened) Porsche 911 Rally still kicking around, though.

And plenty of these rubbishy generic diecast, the range of which I realised were actually just exactly the same models in different packaging...

How does a car that doesn't exist scale to 1:64, anyway?

I swung past Home Bargains too, but they had no Matchbox and nothing Hot Wheels beyond a few lurid fantasy playsets.

Ah well.

Ooo I don't know, that Custom Otto is a bit special in that Metalflake Gold...!

With packaging like that and in that paint choice, it's a nice throwback to the missing link blue car on the original Hot Wheels blister card that Otto Kuhni (RIP) drew for the 1968 Sweet-16 packaging

image.webp.78e981326247ee2c69335a3c454a7396.webp

But it was never produced as a Hot Wheels model, until the 2008 casting in honour (hence, Custom Otto) so it had been stuck in folklore.

I have a couple here, but not in that retro colour or packaging.  So, if you happen to pop back sometime...

I'm going to stick my neck out and suggest it belongs to an A-series Mini of some sort.  But which Corgi or Dinky had that toffee colour?  Also, which would have the dash as an injection-moulded piece, rather than a rudimentary part of a vacform?

Just a thought, but could it also be Rover P6?

Hope the damage isn't too bad!

Volksworld show buys

White isn't a common colour for the Corgi Beetle, don't know where that's come from.

I do have the premium version of the Hot Wheels buggy but mine was chipped and I had to replace the windscreen

Connectibles bug is the normal version rather than the Snap Crackle and Pop promo

Lastly this Zylmex Capri arrived in the post

I disagree. No other manufacturer panders to one particular make of car. Some have ranges for certain ones, but they do other vehicles in their ranges.

If Corgi are concerned that they will not sell the other makes they should release them a smaller numbered editions, and to help keep lower the Ford tax, they should produce those in higher numbered editions.

Their strategy is totally wrong to have over 90% of its new releases as Fords.

What they are failing to pick up on is that some collectors collect all the model produced by one manufacturer, such as Minichamps. It's why you get books dedicated to model manufacturers more than you do model book relating to car manufacturers. They are slowly but surely loosing their core collectors. They've lost me until they release the Black Tulip 1275GT that was initially shown as a 2020 release, but has disappeared from their catalogue. They should do a Mk2 Mini, it would not take much to modify their existing well used Mk1 version, and as the Mk2 has not been modelled by any manufacturer since Vitesse in the 1990s there are probably plenty of Mini collectors screaming for at least one Mk2 for their collection. Then they could modify the Clubman casting by putting a round nose on it and produce a Mk3. Again another car which has had very few versions produced, only Atlas and Norev have produced these, Atlas with their Bronze Yellow Mk3S and Norev with their Teal Blue version.

By the way, I forgot to mention the other Corgi 1/43rd offering they are working on, and it is completely mystifying to me, as I think they will ust sit on shelves gathering dust until they are reduced to £4.99. The next big thing from Corgi is the new generation Formula E car.

And just to finish, my guess as to why Corgi are not releasing much other than Fords, is that they can not afford the licencing costs of other manufacturers.

Boot sale was a bit disappointing, very busy but a noticeable growth in the number of market traders rather than used tat peddlers.

One guy had a box of blister packed partwork cars, mostly Porsches (Century of cars 928 among them) at two for £5. Blisters were all a bit shonky and they're not what really appeals to me. Did get these two on the same deal though

Only other buy was a pound on a Matchbox ice cream canteen, mainly because the figure has all his limbs

^I applaud Vanguards for putting a red interior in that yellow Dolomite, just because I love a red interior in any car; but it's completely unrealistic.  Black is what BL would have used, same as most other manufacturers in the 70s (and ever since).

Doesn't matter; I've never seen one in French Blue (the colour of my old 1850) and the few I do see For Sale are significantly over budget.
