Shite in Miniature II

Scrabbling with excitement, it seemed there were indeed plenty of new-to-me Lesney, Corgi and Majorettes in here - amongst lots of the Days Gone and MoY models that had been mooching round the stall, unloved, for a number of weeks.

That Franklin Mint Stingray was now chancing its fortunes in amongst the dross...

While the resin and white metal kits were plainly fighting a losing battle.

Two Corgi American LaFrance fire ladders were in evidence, but no tractor units that I could see. Super Kings fantasy fire ladder alongside had some glazing issues...

Mostly though, it was the same toys that generally turn up in these boxes - playworn 70s Matchbox, 80s Corgi, and no-name Far Eastern stuff.

Although, my feeling of 'seen it before' became stronger... like the fire-damaged GT40. And the Husky Jag MkX with the Humbrol'd roof.

Until I twigged.

Oh.

A lot of these were my toys.

559067225_IMG_20230303_0809492.thumb.jpg.e178366e5e205d631782aadf83e0daf2.jpg

Yeah - I'd kinda hoped this wouldn't happen.

In a way, this is why I'd left it for nearly a year to come back to the market, between selling off a large chunk of my collection for buttons back in January last year, and furtively sidling back in towards the end of the year.

But these were definitely the same toys I'd had to clear out in a desperate bid to save space ahead of the house move.

Some of them stuff were just leftovers from previous market jaunts that no-one had much wanted. There were obvious tells...

The Pontiac with some sort of modelling clay jammed in the window frames? That was bought on 20 September 2019.

The Tyrone Malone Kenworth racing truck with White-Tac all over the wheels? 18 September 2020.

Blistered BA Airport Coach? 1 November 2019.

Majorette Ford Cargo skip truck? 21 June 2019.

Yow. But, y'know. Circle Of Tat and all that.

Circle_of_Tat_Tomica.thumb.png.334caa08b8e510c7aac7707d90a6b22b.png

But... others here were my childhood toys.

580463767_IMG_20230303_0809242.thumb.jpg.af257af776bb24ff46ffa8b15f522626.jpg

This Majorette tanker, in poor condition and with an inexplicably missing wheel (originally paired with a GMC tractor unit) was unquestionably the same one I'd had in my possession for decades. I think I was bought it in Blackpool in 1987.

(The Renault Traffic minibus bearing evidence of a cackhanded attempt to strip off the tampo with nail polish remover, and the no-name X5-like SUV, were also former Tat Stall refugees.)

1779641743_IMG_20230303_0808282.thumb.jpg.d4176bedbf55f632bc564453023ed16a.jpg

The rough Citroen CX was definitely the same one I bought off Andrew Ruston in the playground c.1989 (he'd brought it in to smash it up, but I offered to buy it off him).

The touched-in wheels and headlights - done during my misguided early teens phase when I acquired a silver Tamiya paint pen, and thought all my toys needed 'detailing' - plus the dab of orange Graffic Traffic pen on the rear lights, were a dead giveaway.

The (rather ruff) Ruff Trek was also an ex-DC item, sourced from the Charity Stall on 10 May 2019.

So yes - all in all, quite the pickle.

A veritable avalanche of memories, regrets and frustrations came raining down on me.

Not quite what you - or I - tune in on a Friday to experience, but here we are.

I continued to guddle.

Nearly everything you can see in this picture was mine at some point. But there were some other items too...

1536403860_IMG_20230303_0810342.thumb.jpg.d3aba82f76bed693dbbced79c5e299d9.jpg

The Matchbox Glo Racers Firebird had been squished rather badly, annoyingly.

And there was this wizened little no-name Alfa Carabo...

45988973_IMG_20230303_0816482.thumb.jpg.821480b9bbe589322face52d0a1011d5.jpg

Matchbox Super GT for reference:

139827447_IMG_20230303_0817272.thumb.jpg.31e3d6c6de744d791a9fedc0aa8382a3.jpg

Yeah, the Super GT Carabo was sort-of mine too. It was part of a set bought as a birthday gift for a kid down the street called Darryl who Cog Minor was friendly with - only at the last minute my brother kicked off and refused to go to his birthday party, and so the gift remained ungiven. The GT ultimately made it into my toy box. And last year I discarded it - and now it's back here.

It's weird and a little frightening how much memory can be unlocked in a single object.

Were it not for seeing this, I might never have thought of Darryl ever again.

Hmm.

So anyway.

At this point, even The Nemesis was asking if I was alright.

But yeah.

I went through the box. There were quite a lot of memories - and there were some I ultimately couldn't leave.

So, that being as it was, I paid up and sloped off.

I did take another look at that Corgi Rambler Marlin, just to see how bad it was for a fiver, but - no.

1035992976_IMG_20230303_0820062.thumb.jpg.fa9d3ae5c1ad32704221aa9c594b1747.jpg

Broken and bent shell, missing door and tyres, and fairly mauled plastic that had been thickly painted over didn't tempt me.

Alan's Eternally Optimistic Emporium was looking a fiver for some 80s Days Gone and Matchbox items.

Yeah, no.

Onwards to Mulligan's Irish Gifts, and some nice Vanguards and all - but at £36, they're becoming increasingly hard to justify.

Talked with Colin on the stall (I always thought he was Colin, until I heard one of the other stallholders call him Davey a few years back and that really threw me) - apparently the fella with '100 Hot Wheels to trade' is meant to be arriving this morning. So that could justify a return visit...

He's also a load more Matchbox Moving Parts and Convoys on the way, so - watch this space.

Charity Stall had not a lot to tempt in the 50p section this week - no more Super Chargers anyway.

476576868_IMG_20230303_0836592.thumb.jpg.5e6692eea3c1802feb74939d8f369487.jpg

Though the 'collectables' section contained this quite tidy Triang Hi-Way Trencher.

Quite decent for a sandpit toy.

Less decent was this Corgi M60 tank...

1903974456_IMG_20230303_0823582.thumb.jpg.5b8513c2a6bb5cf95d13cdc2ddb3dfbe.jpg

Missing cannon, tracks and much of the wheels not a good sign.

251625175_IMG_20230303_0823492.thumb.jpg.165ff49933b9a71df1aa557f77142bca.jpg

Another blast from the past was this Starcom vehicle.

And some familiar items, which have seemingly migrated down from the Tat Stall:

692975940_IMG_20230303_0839522.thumb.jpg.ad8d3671720b1b7c2ce5eed1c32378ef.jpg

Yup, MoYs and that uniquely vile Solido Packard. I've seen Charity Blokey (Lawrence) having a quick rummage through the Tat Boxes a few times, so presumably he pulls out a few things he reckons he might make a pound or two on, for his own stall.

Well, y'gotta speculate to accumulate, as they say... though speculating in busted Models of Yesteryear is what could politely be called a bullish move.

Even Creepy Jesus doesn't look impressed, though Korky The Cat seems to have a yearning for a diecast that could apparently double as a nicotine patch.

This no-name oddity also showed up, under some of the dreck:

2036776084_IMG_20230303_0840112.thumb.jpg.eca7c9a96d930b8ef3d8e001fcded383.jpg

No idea what this might be (crudely) modelled on.

861730439_IMG_20230303_0840212.thumb.jpg.14df5219376f22a088247fae5e186244.jpg

FINEST QUALITY YO

And so, that was pretty much that... with very mixed feelings about life, the universe and everything, I got myself a scone and a coffee to calm my frayed nerves, and slipped out into the morning - now alive with soft rain.

I wasn't able to wear my hat, because you see it was full of tat...

I too had to purge around 50% of my collection during 2013-15 and I'd be more than a touch wistful if I ever saw any of them again.

I'm haunted by a Lledo Days Gone that won't be gone from my life, even when I tried.  I donated it to my local, not-much-footfall-but-enough, charity shop months ago.

It's always in the toy bucket.  It's been there since and is always there, projecting its demonic vibe at me

It's one of these, same colour, same tampo

So yes. Some purchases. A tenner's worth of bitter regret with a dash of complex feelings please, barman.

Some of these are for keeping, I think - but others are for passing on to pastures new.

A Guisval Datsun - Patrol, does that say?

Well well well.

One for @bunglebus?

**TAKEN!!**

Oxford Transit MK3 LWB was formerly mine; too good to see knackered about in the tat box.

Available.

Ditto the Chevy Laguna stocker (now sadly estranged from the original Kenworth transporter I sold it to Blokey with).

1293843019_IMG_20230303_1125422.thumb.jpg.26c20a523c24afcffa51f7e6dc129a0e.jpg

The red Saab's one I've never owned before - so I might hold onto it for a while.

**DIBSED!!**

The white Corgi Aston was one I got with a Yorkie set one Christmas, as I recall - unusually, it has a metal base.

Indicator detailing front and rear identifies it as one of my old toys - and it's for keeping, now.

721041561_IMG_20230303_1125352.thumb.jpg.fe520ac77efff007b00d5d26f84fb429.jpg

Also the Carabo - which I'm happy to send on to @bunglebus with promises of no squashing!

**TAKEN!!**

Hot Wheels VW SP2 was one of many modern diecasts I dispatched in January past - again, a regret to have let it go. It now has acquired some scratches, annoyingly. Dunno whether to flip or stick... anyone fancy it?

216643188_IMG_20230303_1125472.thumb.jpg.1be703847be5c34a4d4f9484599442d3.jpg

Lesney Super Kings Ford tractor unit and Corgi Juniors Mack L-series with the Gloster Saro tanker were also formerly of the Cog Collection; I was a bit annoyed with myself for disposing of them whenever I was auditing my box of old commercials the other week.

So here we are.

113098846_IMG_20230303_1124402.thumb.jpg.756ab26cf0df3138905e846905d3ba87.jpg

Dodge Cattle Truck has epic axle wobble, but is otherwise not in bad condition. Not one of my old flames; it just looked ok for 50p.

1391156212_IMG_20230303_1124442.thumb.jpg.529089a0ef863adc2e484e7d9d1274e7.jpg

Door/ ramp is slightly bent, but still intact. Bit of warm water should see it right.

Base is very shiny.

Available, at 50p.

Majorette Magirus-Deutz mixer is one I've had since forever.

1048122893_IMG_20230303_1125502.thumb.jpg.33e2d185b0ff826010b51eb8146adb8a.jpg

Felt a twinge the other week when reviewing pics of the 2020 lockdown garden fun involving this one, and realising it was now gone - I don't love it, but it's somehow intrinsically mine. It's a weird scale, and even weirder colours, but... once I saw it, I kinda couldn't leave it.

What can I say? I'm a sucker.

712110132_IMG_20230303_1125562.thumb.jpg.47a0c29b794ac32364f6a497829d4a86.jpg

The CX ambulance I've never owned, so that's why it appealed; the blue CX estate was, as detailed, a playground swap.

Both are available at 50p a pop - I feel like I've rescued the estate twice now! I have a near-mint version now, so don't need it - but again, couldn't leave it.

Though promises of non-squashage will be extracted. Restoration is totally fine, though.

The Thunderbird was definitely mine - I can clearly see where I tried to fill in the side trim with chrome paint, then tried to take it off again cos it looked wank. I'd still like a minty example of this, but this one's kinda inextricably linked to me, I feel.

Keeper.

Blue MC Toys Beetle has no particular relationship to me - but the bumpers are usually bust on them, so I thought I'd nab it in case anyone could use it.

Available.

389244769_IMG_20230303_1125232.thumb.jpg.b561edd6f99fdc82384dcb4331bc401e.jpg

These three may or may not have any link to me - I dunno. Keep, pending further enquiries.

The Blazer may have been my brother's - efforts to touch up paint damage with what looks suspiciously like Tipp-Ex would be pretty on-brand for me.

I'd thought the Aspen Ski Mini 4x4 was the one I picked up in September 2019, but apparently not - unless it's had rather a bad time of it since I last clapped eyes on it, as it's quite a bit more scratched up.

I also swiped this Lesney Speed Kings Miura, as it actually looks ok under the custom paint job:

135843100_IMG_20230303_1124082.thumb.jpg.0825d20df6744de2f066650a187a8f2e.jpg

I might try to clean this up myself, as I've been after one of these for a while.

The aftermarket paint's already coming away, and it looks quite decent underneath...

Very likely is - one I think I got off @Tenmil Socket a few years ago. Cab is excellent, glazing too - just no trailer.

Was tempted to buy back... will see if it's still there...

Sounds good - if you find that little no name Carabo it can keep the Matchbox company.

In the mean time, I popped into Smyths. New non-premium line of Fast and Furious - only two on the pegs today. If anyone spots this set please grab me the MK1 RS1600!

Studied this for ages as I know that blue Golf is out of place - should be a Fiesta. However the VW only came out recently and that's an older 5 pack- it's been done well but there are definite shenanigans going on. If it was a genuine error I'd have bought it

The Saab 9000 is a brilliant casting, probably one of the best of the time because it's metal on metal. Quite hard to find now, I regretted letting both of mine go at some point.

My youngest has one in her cars, she likes how the doors open which the newer basic ones don’t have such features.
