Anyone seen a Corgi Juniors Binz ambulance with opaque windows before?

Screenshot_20221113-205637_eBay.jpg

I'm pretty sure they all came with opaque windows - I don't remember any that had an interior fitted, or see-through windows.

I'll have a look for mine tomorrow (assuming I still have it) - think it has black opaque windows, and I've owned it since the mid-80s.

Turns out I was wrong - mine has the same opaque blue windows too, not black.

Since the emergency light on top is formed as part of the glazing unit, I can understand why blue glazing was used - either translucent or opaque. But not black.

From memory (already shown to be fairly unreliable, admittedly) this was part of a blister-packed set of three (or maybe five?) emergency vehicles, c.1987 - so pre-Mattel ownership. The base says it's made in GB.

A quick flick through the big Bill Manzke book shows:

1-E Mercedes-Benz 220D Ambulance, October 1977 to 1983 (Mettoy era)

No interior, rear windows have frosted effect, black plastic base, Whizzwheels.

Picture 1 of 3

Five variants - some have an all-white or all- cream body with circular Red Cross stickers on the bonnet and front doors, others have the lights and bumpers mask sprayed in silver. One listing has purple tinted glazing, rather than blue.

J 167 Mercedes-Benz 220D Binz Ambulance 1986 (Corgi Toys Ltd era)

White body, no graphics, opaque light blue windows. Some came with Red Cross tampo print - possibly as part of a gift set.

Some later '80s variants have a red roof and blue translucent windows.

(As shown above)

90390 Auto-City Mercedes-Benz Ambulance, 1992 (Mattel era)

Several variations, all with blue tinted windows: some white with red tampo printing to sides and roof;

others with orange printing to bonnet and sides.

Picture 1 of 5

I don't believe the Merc ambulance casting survived past 1996 - the point when the Corgi Juniors/ Auto-City line was absorbed into the general Hot Wheels range.

Still, 18 years isn't a bad innings.

Those MiniChamps. Why the odd number of manufacture? Nothing is rounded to complete say 250, 500 or whole thousands. The two Taunus models do not have matching production totals.

They've just arrived in Northern Ireland Lidl branches. £5.99 a set.

There were also some more all-fantasy sets, which I roundly ignored because I'm like that.

I quite liked the illustration on the back of the Demo Destruction set:

Lidl also have some of the Super Rigs range:

The five-packs aren't bad value at £6, especially as Tesco are offering the same sets at 50% more:

Not much to get the heart racing at the local store tonight, anyway.

New stock of the MB nine-packs, though - still at £12 a throw.

I'd have been chuffed to get any of those multipacks when I was a kid.

Hell, I still would.

Right, fair warning - I've found a handful of Mk1 Escorts, RS2000s and a Cosworth and I'm still hunting.

I'll be offering them to you lot later, one of each each and I'd prefer them to go to those that have already expressed an interest in them. Just thought I'd give you all a heads up, I'll be home later this afternoon - let's say 4pm?

It's something that has puzzled me for years. They do reduce the amount sometimes when new colour versions are issued.

So, my soggy adventures around Lakeside earlier lead me to the following;

Hamleys have loads of Majorette multi-packs - expensive of course

Oh and these. Three MK1 RS1600s, two RS2000s and a red Cosworth, plus I grabbed some of the Nissan Patrols as someone mentioned wanting one - essentially I'm just keeping the blue Firebird and the radio flyer, everything else is up for grabs but one each on the Fords please to be fair to everyone

Morrisons had them at £7.50 last week. I was tempted, but for five cars the pack takes up quite a bit of space. If they'd have a pack with both Toyotas Celica and 2000GT then I'd have been tempted....

Likewise I saw a HW Multipack with the blue R30 Skyline and a Celica, but resisted the urge.
