Nice! I had one with a blue lower half. I had a matchbox w124 as well and those were amongst my faves in my collection. I was confused why it didn’t say “rover” on the base but now I know it’s because in the US that was basically the make and model. You’ve got me looking on e bay now!

Matchbox Glow Racer right?

Blank base. Somewhere in the depths of my memory there's something about these being sold under another name, so I'm guessing this was the case here. Hoping @Datsuncog has better recollection than I do!

As a kid we had a Rover 800 on our street driven by an absolute wanker that lived a few doors down. I think it was a case if he could just about afford one as it was an 820E on steels. Anyway back to the Matchbox one, I had the silver, my first Matchbox and the red one, plus the laser wheels one which seems to be quite scarce these days.

There's a yellow one as well,from a German Christmas gift set20220729_180709.thumb.jpg.aa39c1a2c35f3a1df682ddfce80687d9.jpg

Snap.

I may* have just bought a minter off ebay.

Obviously just to compare with the play worn one :)

Sorry for the sideways picture, I finally found the Toyota Van in Tescos tonight.

They've hiked the price up 50p to £2 though. Bastards.

How? I need one of these. Never seen one in the shops. If anyone has any spares of this model I would be happy to buy.

I'll have a look in Tesco tomorrow - there was at least one in the Hot Wheels bin in my local store on Wednesday night; I picked it up but decided I didn't really need it and put it back again...

I managed to get a MIB Sterling at a toy fair back in 2007, for something silly like £1:

Skoda Estelle, Rover 800/Sterling and Simca/Chrysler Alpine

That's the absolutely perfect rendition of the MIB Sterling. That futuristic blue hatched box was such a mouth-waterer.

I vividly remember WH Smiths of Clacton-On-Sea having a twirly display tower thing laden with such boxes, and every time I visited (probably on monthly intervals), I'd make straight for it, eager to check out the new arrivals. When the Sterling arrived, and I spotted that it had an actual sunroof, it became my number one diecast want. Alas, I never got a boxed example; I instead acquired a playworn example from the school playground.

It's funny, right now I can still feel the sensation of the car rolling from side to side in the box, and remember the frustration of trying to prise the box open without tearing the flap too messily. Also the "will it, won't it" anticipation of whether or not there's a collector's card in the little void below the car. Generally the latter were reserved for the earlier light blue boxes.

Oh to be seven again.

Actually, maybe not.

Yup, the Glo-Racer range was briefly sold under the Matchbox name for 1982 only, before the tooling passed to Hong Kong toymaker Lash-Tameron, who then marketed them with the Matchbox name deleted off the packaging and bases from 1983 onwards.

I'm not sure whether L-T originally made the range in Hong Kong under contract to Lesney and simply took it over when the British company hit financial difficulties (possibly in lieu of money owed?), or if they bought the line from Universal during the takeover, but that's what your nameless Glo-Racer will be.

I think the catalogue number on that one is GR-12, and it was sold as 'Night Bird'.

New arrival time. A classic 'why did they model that?' - the Mebetoys A30 Iso Rivolta S4 (aka Iso Fidia), the outrageous Italian-American super saloon built in tiny numbers in the late 1960s

20220730_092833.thumb.jpg.f424b2056e67654c0da5883406e2e2a5.jpg

This thing is brilliant. Firstly, it's a huge model -even in my beefy mitts it feels big, heavy and impressive. If you were a kid in 1970 you'd feel so chuffed to have this

20220730_093118.thumb.jpg.1ecd91d323fb4b93e9a6ad9f66f92feb.jpg

Proportions and details generally spot-on, although the car itself is quite plain so there's not loads of details to model, but it's got the (too large) Iso crest on the C-pillars, and badges on the back

20220730_092848.thumb.jpg.dce4d638c598b0b56a1c8850d0878832.jpg

Lots of opening bits...

20220730_092924.thumb.jpg.7c9dcd7b8d849137c083b9eeba3cea78.jpg

And a pretty decent Chevy V8 engine, which made the real thing the world's fastest four-door car when it was launched

20220730_092942.thumb.jpg.4ff95a5ec379e66ab74cbe74ef5f2e5e.jpg

There was obviously a bit of national pride involved in this model, as there were a few Iso toys out at the same sort of time. This makes a nice pair with the Politoys Iso Rivolta. I need to find the Politoys Export Grifo to complete the set, now.

Lovely! Very pleased to add this one to the non-collection. I don't think I've seen one for sale before at a reasonable price. Considering the condition I was pretty amazed to score this for £20 as most of these earlier Mebetoys seem to have gone pretty crazy in the last couple of years

I have delayed the return home today, at the end of our holiday, so I can go to a large car boot this afternoon.

Someone had better be selling some decent matchbox, to make it worth having an unhappy wife.

Not Blue Anchor is it? Quality hunting ground for Matchbox that is.

So what did I find, first time out hunting for MB that I use to have as a child in the 70's and early 80's, cause I am old :)

First this. Always thought the wings should be black. Maybe the paint has come off.

Then

Followed by

20220730_144944.thumb.jpg.d7e6c021bc42cb22ca1e9296ed97545a.jpg

Then an unexpected Majorette. Just had to have it. Was my favourite of the day

20220730_145106.thumb.jpg.ee347089d13fe4f52aefc03e9d7fa8be.jpg

Well it was my favourite, till this was discovered. Even has one of the hoses still attached.

£10.50 all in. The Texaco truck was a fiver. The dumper was 50p and the others were a quid each.

There used to be a guy that just sold diecast at that car boot. There’s another half decent one at Dunster tomorrow morning.

The Texaco came from the diecast guy.

Sadly can't make Dunster. Mrs will kill me if she's not home tonight.

Loving the nostalgia here!

I have 2 burgundy Sterlings so if anyone wants one in good but not quite mint condition, they can have it for cost of postage.

Dude, if you really do have one spare, I'd love one as a dashboard adornment / talisman for my 800...
