^^ Is that a green Guisval Mk1 Fiesta in the front row, beside the Majorette Alpine?

No! It's a Mira MK1 Fiesta, seen these go for strong money so was pleased to spot that among the tat. I have a Guisval already

Today's work companion, busted from the underbed prison...

I'd mentioned yesterday that way back in 2001, I was hopeful that Vanguards would soon release a Viva HC as part of their striking range of 1970s metal.

Well, I'm still waiting - they did produce a two-door HB Viva, but so far the closest I've come to a 1/43 model of my own car is Oxford Diecast's Vauxhall Firenza.

1329337101_IMG_20220630_1611502.thumb.jpg.120e7e511e4724f58b7b6a539862c311.jpg

This was a bit of an unexpected release, as largely Oxford's 1/43 scale stuff has been rather more staid 50s and 60s models - but not unwelcome.

The overall shape is good, and while the detail's maybe not quite as finely done as recent Vanguards, it would be churlish to complain.

1433056584_IMG_20220630_1612042.thumb.jpg.1325b594c3f5b8eba08ecf26849ab101.jpg

Ok, so I'm a churl - I wish the headlights weren't quite so googly, but it's not a bad effort.

2132432138_IMG_20220630_1612122.thumb.jpg.1995eb36e05bf204c2b1217e517c47ff.jpg

Coloured plastic inserts for the rear lights might have looked a bit more authentic than paint, but hey - beggars/choosers and all that.

Badging isn't bad, and the interior's nicely detailed (you'll have to take my word for it, as the potatocam won't have any of it).

25767544_IMG_20220630_1612342.thumb.jpg.d99adedf910cbe064fc2ca3e5af5d287.jpg

The underside hasn't been ignored either, with some reasonable effort at detailing - more than earlier Vanguards had, anyway.

I'd hoped this one might mark an upturn in 1/43 cars from a similar era by Oxford - maybe a Maxi? - but not much joy yet. Though I was tempted by their Jensen Interceptor...

This model was available in a few different colours, and I so wanted this in Honey Starmist - like my real-life Viva - but the only ones I could find in that shade had terrible paintwork flaws, so I ended up with the blue one instead.

As my grandmother might have said, it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick...

Well I have the first part, the skills element remains to be seen

I've also dismantled a Dragon Wheels just so I could see what had been altered, the roof narrows more at the back and the rear window is smaller, actually making that area more accurate than the original. You have to wonder how much was actually saved using the original casting, there's really not a lot of it left.

Still amazed that the 1500, Flying Bug, Dragon Wheels, Volks-Dragon and Sand Digger all share DNA

Just arrived,

IMG_20220628_221610.thumb.jpg.28f4bdec867dcf6418d3b219272024b7.jpg

Better late than never! I pre ordered this last January when the newly tooled Vanguards RS2000 was announced, but they have only just gone on sale. So, worth the wait?

IMG_20220628_221655.thumb.jpg.27d45ab68539c63ea84b1ec96a37d660.jpg

There are two new RS2000 variants in the Vanguards range, the standard bodied RS, and this, the Series X (or X-pack). The standard bodied version in Signal Yellow is fantastic, I wish I could have ordered them both, but with them now costing £30 odd a pop now (yup, I remember when they were a tenner!) it was a case of picking out one as I have other stuff ordered. With memories of the opening credits of Minder, along with the short lived TV show The Marksman (remember that anyone?) which featured a red X Pack adorned RS, not to mention the one featured briefly in Clockwise, it had to be this one. I've always loved the shovel nosed RS and decent models have always been hard to find, being limited to Minichamps and Trofeu. The prices  the Minichamps ones go for are insane and even the Trofeu ones tend to go for more than the new Vanguards ones cost, and the Trofeu casting is showing it's age now.

IMG_20220628_222805.thumb.jpg.b669c65cf32b75bbfad88a148dfab349.jpg

IMG_20220628_222105.thumb.jpg.468fb2ff3bd7c426364892788918ca86.jpg

As usual, I'm having problems getting decent pictures of this, with it being red and having to use my previous cameraphone, as my new one is away getting repaired. But I think it looks great, very chunky with those wide wings. The car modelled is apparently one of 6 built by Ford to showcase the Series X bits that could be specified for the RS. This one had quite a lot thrown at it, with a stage 1 engine, rocket 'box, World Cup spec suspension, upgraded brakes with vented discs and wider 7.5J alloys plus of course the Zakspeed inspired wide body kit by Fibresports. It was featured in the dealer  promo video and also the brochure with Björn Waldegård test driving it and proclaiming that it was the spec that he would choose himself for an Escort. High praise!

IMG_20220628_221911.thumb.jpg.105f6db87b780746a031bf1dabf21893.jpg

As usual, it doesn't disappoint on the details, lovely front end.

Fine mesh vents on the rear wing panels

IMG_20220628_222034.thumb.jpg.7177dea6ae4b9d7d71c15a6f8f2a5c10.jpg

And fantastic renditions of the deeply dished wheels, with correct light grey highlights and miniscule RS logos on the centres.

IMG_20220628_222153.thumb.jpg.85c4784b768c2b5c5688e0af6f47a9db.jpg

Just love the tampo printed decals here too.

IMG_20220628_222353.thumb.jpg.a5011e041c0366e7e0b5d44c7507c315.jpg

IMG_20220628_223610.thumb.jpg.a2b8af0f9e763b938ec72f3262304b4a.jpg

Slight disappointment in the tail lights having clearly visible locating pegs, which most manufacturers have largely done away with nowadays. Looks like they've carried on using the ones from the older flat fronted Mk2 casting.

IMG_20220628_222516.thumb.jpg.f71483189ab7fb51b3af15fb5d0aea92.jpg

Only other real whinge is that they also appear to have used the old baseplate from the flat front version too, which was used on both base and sporty models which always resulted in a bit of an arse-up attitude. It shows more on this wide bodied version with the rear wheels not-exactly filling the arches. Still, these Vanguards are piss-easy to take apart and have a mess with, and I've managed to sort the ride height on a couple of the flat front ones.

IMG_20210110_134624.thumb.jpg.4a4be64dd59eaf148550098f0ebe30ae.jpg

IMG_20210110_134605.thumb.jpg.f07eaba306edcfba32b25bdb8e5454e8.jpg

Couldn't pick up much detail on the interior as it's like the black hole of Calcutta (and because shite cam) but it has the right Scheel type seats with the roll-top headrests of an early Custom-spec car

IMG_20220628_223115.thumb.jpg.b9b3144d705de6c8f1176c799f72a02a.jpg

In all, I'm chuffed with it and it was worth the wait IMO. Just a shame the price stops me buying as many as I used to, but that's the times we live in now I suppose. I did have another newly released Vanguards model delivered today, but that's getting put away for Christmas! I'm expecting something rather special in 1/43 arriving around September though...

That is absolutely splendid, the detail on the front end is literally perfect.

Like buses, I'll bet the Ford purists will insist on a model being absolutely correct in every detail and it looks like they've nailed it.

These newer Vanguards look like excellent pieces and if that's the quality you get for £30, I might have a gander myself! The latest one I have is the Sierra Sapphire, a model which is still probably at least 10-15 years old now. Its a shame the MK3 Cavaliers Turbos are so pricey as I'd love one of those.

Hunch correct.

Anyone want one/two/all?

EDIT - now all spoken for!

I really don't know what to do with them, otherwise. Grabby-hands were engaged before brain kicked in.

One of them appears to have weirdly blistered paint on the roof that's developed into a missing patch at one point - which I didn't notice til I got home, annoyingly - so if anyone fancies carrying out a guilt-free custom job, this could be a suitable candidate...

£1.25 each, plus the inevitable postage with Royal Mail 2nd Class.

Very nice job they've done of it - I must get myself a MK2 at some point. I quite like the lower spec stuff, but the X-Pack is in a class of its own.

Enjoy!

The Vanguards Sapphire is one of the best they've done and still holds up well today, an early Cosworth features in the new RS box set they've just released. The red GLSi remains one of my all-time faves in the collection.

I was lucky enough to get hold of a Mk3 Cav Turbo last year for £30 posted. I couldn't hit BIN quick enough! It's a bit of a bone of contention among collectors that they went to all the trouble and expense to tool up for the Mk3 but they've barely made use of it. There have been more BTCC versions than road cars and the market's definitely there looking at the prices the models fetch and the upturn in interest in full size '80s & '90s Vauxhall's in general. I'm hoping one day they'll do a facelift SRi in Rioja Red, then I'll be happy...

@Datsuncog I'll take one of the Kadetts please! My local tesco has had a restock and judging by the presence of the backwards/forwards car, its the right case but all the Kadetts have been purged.

It wasn't me that sold you a Cavalier but if anyone has a Vanguards one or a Matchbox one I'd be interested!

I'm not sure who I got it off if it wasn't you - it was maybe four or so years back, and I don't think it was all that expensive (I wouldn't have bought it otherwise!) It's a very nice model, but I've never really bonded with it - maybe if it was a boggo 1.6 Envoy I'd feel a bit different?

Box is a wee bit tatty in places, but what would you say to £15 all-in for the Cavalier and Kadett, including post?

(And never fear, I'll give it a dust beforehand - looks way worse in the pics than it does in front of me.)

I've been reading up on K214 OWP as the name of the owner is shown on the box. I'm on the Cavalier Owners Facebook page so punched in his name and the first thing that came up was a picture of the model with his 1/1 version. Apparently he got 10 free models as payment for letting Corgi use his car as a base.

He took it on a Gumball run from Aberdeen to Ibiza in 2014.  Apparently, in their quest to promote 'Gumball' as a 'luxury' event they completely excluded his car from all footage, instead concentrating on Ferraris and such like. So much so that he got a ribbing, to the point of being wide, from some Welsh chaps in a Ferrari (which later turned out to be a rental) saying his Cavalier would break down and would get in the way on the track session. Later, as he was letting it cool after a fair few no doubt hard laps, in limps the Ferrari at walking pace, pissing out oil. The rear diff seal had popped which was allegedly an engine out job to replace. They had to get recovered back to Wales from Ibiza. He says the Cavalier never missed a beat.

You'll also see from the description on the back of the box that the car spent its entire life in Scotland, Aberdeen to be precise. Cavaliers and Scotland do not get on well at all and he unfortunately had to scrap it because it turned out to be terminally rotten.  Exactly why I bought mine from as far afield as Hereford and it certainly won't be seeing any salt!

The same fate befell the GSi that Corgi also modelled and the red SRi isn't on the road any more either.

What's odd is that there are 3 road versions, at least 2 touring cars and I think there is a police version too but each has been made in extremely limited runs. All have material differences in the bumpers and other parts. It seems like a lot of effort to go to for such small runs and charging not particularly much fornthe finished product. The chaps on the FB page have been saying how hard they are to get a hold of.

Anyway, I'm delighted with this!

Would said two-door happen to be a dark-ish blue HB? My Grampa has one, as a smol replica of his favourite car that he owned. :)

Not sure Vanguards did a dark blue version - several different shades of mid-blue, but no really dark blues - unless he painted one himself?

I have no idea about the maker but they are nice and unusual.  I've only owned a few tinplate toys during my childhood in the 1950s/early 60s.  I had a tipper lorry with a high geared clockwork motor which was fast and frail, a four engined Japanese made aircraft (battery powered, with sequenced prop start-up, passenger door closing and taxying etc.) - actually my brother's, and a Bristol Belvedere helicopter (like a chinook, but earlier). I remember cutting my fingers on the sharp edges and also the ease with which they could be dismantled - usually permanently, which is why I have not still got them.
