Shite in Miniature II

i have added some new additions to the tat hoard here, again all are vintage Lesney-Matchbox, and also i have added too and resurrected some more out of the scrap-pile-of-slightly-broken-ones.

first off, the racing cars Kerry got me recently, the Ferrari was missing its driver, so one has been procured for the car,

20210801_191658.thumb.jpg.1ddde16cc2213dfc72f605952d918903.jpg

and the Lotus was missing a side number. the one on the other side of the car is worn, but i am going to keep it as is.

20210801_191638.thumb.jpg.bbec14114929c810c6031a6d1abc6a26.jpg

These bits all were bought from Steve Flowers.

20210801_191711.thumb.jpg.07208b1e0249d8bb04d083653b450630.jpg

then, from the scrap pile comes this, a Daimler Fleetline. it came from a swapmeet (remember them?) back in the "before times" which i pounced on cos of the condition of the paintwork, not seeing of course at the time that it was missing most of one wheel.

20210801_191721.thumb.jpg.1d917a71383f62b6e64b4f2fb5656664.jpg

well i finally got a replacement one which fitted after boiling it for a few minutes and opening up the hole first.

i also have added a driver to this Daimler Ferret scout car, which had also been a longtime resident  of the scrap pile. i will paint it at some point, but currently just having it sat in there is ok.

20210801_192303.thumb.jpg.595e4fe338a7bd9fbca3471501016eef.jpg

and also these arrived curtesy of Datsuncog, and they are ace, the extra stickers on the Landrover, and a working bonnet on the Jaguar been just the icing on the cake so too speak.

20210801_191901.thumb.jpg.45a590ebb028ba1a5c213da7a6413b28.jpg20210801_191913.thumb.jpg.bda10a548a1711a85f1c2c64a1a2e9ac.jpg20210801_192004.thumb.jpg.620bed9f06703a268d7c820b65dec5cf.jpg

and then last but not least, from Mr Ramrod, again some time ago i got this Bedford TK and trailer, which had a below optimum number of wheels, and of course not backdoors!

20210801_191802.thumb.jpg.c4c9f9ed402e4b95a740a064e3cdc807.jpg20210801_191807.thumb.jpg.2d3f3491a13d02b3ff6fbb9684e72dde.jpg20210801_191850.thumb.jpg.33ae2e9a8ca91eff06af6981dff66f70.jpg

following the same routime, of opening out the hole, and then boiling the wheel i was eventually able to get it onto the trailer axel, so now it has the proper number of wheels,

20210801_191830.thumb.jpg.40ba0bf34b0bf97108b3419e6ec34348.jpg20210801_191839.thumb.jpg.1a1cd2ca98a5c5aacfe05eeb1ebf400b.jpg

i have also got a pair of doors for it,  but to fit them the base plate on the trailer needs to come off, but considering how slender the white metal "hinges" are on them, i am am actually thinking of knocking them off, glueing the doors together than then just fitting  them to the back of the  truck after giving them a coat of orange humbrol paint first!

Not my bag will trade for something like a Rat Rod Mercury Cougar, or the wildcat mustang in battered but complete condition.

I’m interested in this but don’t have either of those to trade 😩

The Fundiplastic Ritmo measures approx 1:27 so I would like that please

Not sure what I have spare as currently touring Cornwall for a fortnight

Definitely do have a Rat Rod and the Mustang without the engine cutout

Didn’t look that there was conversation over the page ☺️

Ah well, if @Tenmil Socket changes mind... it was because it’s the five door and I wanted to make a slot conversion like this Spanish fella did a while back

Remember this beaten up, rusty and scratched up Tonka Fairlady?

20210718_111437

I dunked it in paint stripper

20210720_105855

And following @andrew e's suggestion of a metalflake finish, it got a coat of metallic red, followed by a load of red glitter spray and a ton of lacquer

20210803_16265120210803_16261920210803_16271220210803_162751

One wheel needed a going over with the Molotow pen, sidewalls were re-done by spraying white onto a card and "printing" each tyre onto it, but the bit I'm proudest of is that front bumper, made from a flat sheet of plastic and heated up then bent to follow the lines of the car, followed by lots of filing and sanding.

Some plastic came home with me from the boot sale this morning. Don't think I've had any Norevs before, but curiosity triumphed in the end, the bloke wasn't asking too much for them. The 16 has a bit of warpage to the top of the o/s front wing but isn't too bad otherwise. Lovely swirly marbled  interiors too. How old are they?

60's. Great finds at a boot sale. Love 'em. I have a 4 (and that's fairly early as on later models the number plate on the rear is body colour and moulded in I think),  but not yet a 16.

The first image of the car painted I thought you had added fake nails over the headlights. 🙄

Nope, used nail varnish and stripes before but not found a use for false nails. Trying to make a point of masking and spraying details like that as I hate looking at pictures of my hand painted efforts. They look OK in real life but enlarged on a screen I can see where I've gone wrong. Takes a bloody age masking stuff up though

Right. We've all seen some Pilen models here before, and the company has been discussed a little bit in the past. As with lots of these smaller European makers it's difficult to find much information about them in English (although there is a pretty good wikipedia page, as it happens) but in summary, the firm's 1:43 range was almost entirely made up of second-hand castings from other European manufacturers, with some crossover with the last of the 'proper' Dinkys built in Spain, which either started as Pilens and became Dinkys, or more likely the other way round. Of the Spanish 'big three', Pilen seemed to have the jump on quality over both Joal and Guisval (and Mira, actually) although most of the recycled models were a drop down from the originals.

Still reading? Well, Pilen did release a small handful of original models in the early '70s. These are particularly interesting because most of them were subjects that were not modelled in 1:43 scale by any other manufacturers, and they all fit loosely into my self-imposed GT/prototype/coachbuilt theme. And now I have two of them!

Both pretty unfamiliar, huh? The pinkish one is the 1970 Vauxhall SRV concept car, and the green one is an Intermeccanica Indra. Hardly the most obvious choices for diecast toys I'd say.

The Vauxhall is a great little thing, despite the odd colour choice (the real thing was silver, which was also available on this model). Note particularly the accurate wheels and engine area (although, bizarrely, the two banks of dials and switches in the engine bay are reversed from the real thing).

The Indra, too, is really well done, with great proportions and excellent details. The wheels are also accurate to the prototype and unique to this model, and that looks enough like a big Chevy V8 under the bonnet to satisfy me. Both of these are pretty rare, but not incredibly so. The Indra is more often seen in other, less attractive colours, so after months of watching this one I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger.

I think this goes to show the designers in Spain could come up with stuff that was just as nice as their Italian and French counterparts. It's a shame there weren't more 'genuine' Pilens, but at least the small range gives me something to aim for... the other models were a lovely Monteverdi Hai (which, if I ever find one, means I'll have to spalsh out on the Dinky 375 to go with it), a brilliant AMC Javelin (oddly, the even more obscure Spanish Inter-Cars/Narcoral company made an AMC AMX, which would be a great pairing. That one's often described as a copy of the Pilen, but they are clearly representing two different models), a Seat 124 coupe (I don't think this was a re-make but I'm not certain) and a Seat Bocanegra (other companies made these - every Spanish company did, in fact - but the Pilen is by far the nicest). So, er, watch this space

I bought the Pilen Seat at a Swapmeet in January 1996 and was really impressed with its detail and quality. It reminded me of a late 1960s Dinky with full opening features, and jewelled headlights. It has proper Seat wheels and rubber tyres too. It's one of the few 'saleable' models in my collection that I've kept over the years.

I would pay £, perhaps even ££, if somebody would make a 1:18 Vauxhall SRV. A proper opening diecast one to show it off properly, not a sealed resin one.

Same goes with the Peugeot Quasar concept, which Matchbox had a decent crack at in a smaller scale but has otherwise gone rather underrepresented given how wonderful/mental it was.

Anyone want a free 1970s army Jeep?

Its a large plastic jeep which has been in the family for many years. Unfortunately my young lad has been over-enthusiastic when pushing it around and it now has major fractures in the structure. Length is around 30cm.

It's potentially repairable to someone who had the time and is a cool old thing.  Just cover postage and it's yours on the condition it's fixed up/doesn't go in the bin.

If it's the 124, and you'd ever want to let it go, please let me know! They are really lovely but tricky to find in the UK

It's the same as that one but I think I was the first person to take it out of the box! It's one of those ones that's firmly in the 'my cup of tea' pile I'm afraid!
