Shite in Miniature II

So, had a delivery yesterday.

I'm quite late here to the Schabak party. I've bought a few Vauxhall/Opel models from Gama over the years and I do like this era of nicely made German model from the late '80s/early '90s. Detail might be lacking a bit compared to today's models from Minichamps/Vanguards/Neo etc but they are still chock full of charm from an era when I was just about making the transition from collecting small 'toy' Matchbox and the like to proper 1/43 collectors stuff. So first up,

IMG_20210717_190912.thumb.jpg.983f1ac55fe54d712bdf256c8d3be048.jpg

This is another real 'holy grail' model for me. I have quite a lot of 'Fast Ford' models in the collection now, but a distinct lack of hot Fiesta action. Truth is, there isn't really a massive choice of sporty Fiestas in 1/43 form. Mk1 XR2s can be had from Minichamps and Vanguards, so are expensive. I have one silver Vanguards XR2 and that's it. (If you want a real laugh, see how much people are asking for Vanguards Mk1 Supersports...), Neo Mk2 XR2s do exist, but that'll be £80-£90 please sir. (Word is that the Mk2 XR2 is one of the favourites to be next modelled by Vanguards. If they're still around by then...). Mk3 wise, again you're struggling. Kess do a stunning resin RS Turbo, but again you're talking ££££££. IMG_20210717_191038.thumb.jpg.cfded30248669dcf03cc06297dd38fee.jpg

So really, you're left with the Schabak XR2i, a model which is getting on for 30 years old now, luckily it doesn't look bad for its age. Saying that, due to the lack of choice, prices of these too have started to climb. Recent mint boxed examples have sold on eBay for £20-£30+ so I thought I'd missed the boat with these. Luckily this came up with a tempting BIN price, so at long last, the Fiesta MK3 shaped hole has been filled!

IMG_20210717_190925.thumb.jpg.a401b80644b65151e6d7496634539dac.jpg

Mint and boxed too. The box is also in pretty good condition with quite a wishlist on the rear! Shame though that the plastic box window has yellowed and split with age. I'll have to see if I can replace it somehow.

IMG_20210717_191106.thumb.jpg.a50b5306bf8c3d34b9eded7f90d6670d.jpg

Pleasingly, the mintiness includes the notoriously fragile headlights, indicators and auxiliary lights, which easily fall out and get lost with these.

IMG_20210717_191126.thumb.jpg.f4d7cfb59fb51a2d9abcd37566244cd9.jpg

Taillights too, are still present, as is the rear screen, which are also often missing on these.

IMG_20210717_191412.thumb.jpg.5ccd2f612bfbe73450f144e6dd7db4dc.jpg

Schabak's party trick of course was the amount of opening features. Sadly the realism on this car appears to extend to a non-existent boot floor...

IMG_20210717_191309.thumb.jpg.ca861e82f0ce91c52e832f19ecce66d7.jpg

Doors open too, allowing a look at the interior detail. Obviously at early '90s levels, but its all recognisable as a MK3 dash, with a correct shape steering wheel,

IMG_20210717_191344.thumb.jpg.8297b9163af3853cb377e3215a2a6f7c.jpg

The bolsters on the sports seats are about right too.

IMG_20210717_191442.thumb.jpg.68fda7578b9a23b6f36af9ade7b07274.jpg

Another treat is the opening bonnet, something rarely seen even today with 1/43, and a very decent attempt at a 1.6 CVH (Coarse, Vibratory, Harsh) in there.

IMG_20210718_132525.thumb.jpg.e1d6f513570faed261cd115b45ce37e9.jpg

Good underbody detail too, for the time.

IMG_20210717_191628.thumb.jpg.c010d0bcc41f2837b72749bf11c6904a.jpg

Shape is captured well too. Shame it doesn't have the blue pinstripes and bumper strips like the 1/25 version but the black front splitter and tailgate spoiler break up the sea of red and even the wheels aren't a bad stab at the early XR2i ones. Should display well I reckon.

Right, don't know why Chrome had decided to insert every picture I've uploaded today into one post, but anyway...

The Schabak Fiesta listing came with an Escort as well. The Mk5 is another casting  that I've been meaning to get hold of for a while, so this one fills a gap.

IMG_20210717_191958.thumb.jpg.6ed61f1f462a9c711b49a6b823d4a6bf.jpg

An Escort 'wagon' no less!

IMG_20210717_192751.thumb.jpg.56b97474980037c97332903fdfa92bb2.jpg

And a posh looking wagon too, judging by the sunroof and the natty roof rails. Never seen a Schabak Escort in black either.

IMG_20210717_192222.thumb.jpg.a40bc0ef2ae628e06517a8054583c7c9.jpg

Again, this one's in really good condition with only a couple of blemishes in the shiny black paint. The GLX spec wheel trims are well replicated.

IMG_20210717_192645.thumb.jpg.f26d3a2cbc759dd44821d4d3b27d1454.jpg

IMG_20210718_132932.thumb.jpg.5e12323214c5b56ebb38f887f94878d4.jpg

IMG_20210717_192357.thumb.jpg.9e0a4074811240611b167c892702f866.jpg

Again, the interior isn't dripping with detail, but it's a decent stab at a Mk5 interior. God, the amount of miles I drove in these bloody things back in the day when I worked on the taxis....

IMG_20210717_192731.thumb.jpg.f506caead9f7eaa5d2c139937c48827f.jpg

However the loadspace wasn't bad, I did quite a few airport runs with them. This one, being a GLX, even has a loadspace cover, which would probably make things nicer for the imaginary smol owner of this example...

IMG_20210717_192601.thumb.jpg.663dff1442e8e2f41938237f6ca73c0c.jpg

... because (and this is actually one of the reasons I love these Schabak Escorts) under the bonnet we have the fantastic* normally aspirated 1.8 Endura-DE diesel. The ones I drove were lower L spec ones and had no loadspace cover, making that boxy space at the back act like a big boombox. I drove a few 1.8 d hatchbacks and I actually quite liked the farty, parpy exhaust note on those, a bit like the Morris Minor exhaust raspberry. But constant. However that noise, amplified by a large, uncovered loadspace got a bit tiring over a long shift...

IMG_20210717_192334.thumb.jpg.2a34c41a761d8ddabe290f911eaa41f6.jpg

So, a Mk5 Escort, estate, diesel. How could this not be shite?

All in all, with the postage, this and the Fiesta came in at about £7 each, which I was quite happy with.

Went BIG CAR BOOT

Another waste of time

It also getting to me that I find myself increasingly alien in my birth country

There’s one not all that far from us, it’s absolutely full of travellers selling stolen power tools, it runs all year round but it’s such as waste of time I wouldn’t even consider it. One of the reasons everything I’ve done with goes to the charity shop or on fleabay now is previous experience of doing car boots and having to put up with something being priced at a quid or whatever then constant ‘I only have 10p’ bollocks. On pretty much every occasion we’d get up at some god awful hour, spend several hours being insulted and come away with something like £15.

Mind you the sellers can be wankers as well, a guy yesterday was selling Matchbox/hot wheels ‘two for a quid’ anyhow the only thing worth having was a Hot Wheels mk2 Golf, rest was rubbish, the guy refused to sell it to me unless I bought 2. His mindset was that he’d end up with loads of loose change it wasn’t worth his time accepting anything less than a quid. I expect his wealth is probably one of the reasons he was spending the hottest day of the year selling off a paste table on the outskirts of Mansfield. Either way I put it back out of principle.

One more little job I did while I was in glazing mode - the custom Matchbox Cortina's window unit was looking very yellowed so it's had a couple of days outside in a bag of Cara White. Worrying it actually ended up slightly milky, but a T-cut and a coat of self-shining floor polish have sorted that out.

the last batch I used was thinned slightly with water, so I think I'll do the same in future

Next item in the Corgi Model Club promotion has now arrived...

333117790_IMG_20210717_1232592.thumb.jpg.7cd0be5dcf5646f672da9e0ee19a2aee.jpg

It's the No. 330 Porsche Carrera 6.

Engine detailing quite nice...

This time they've chosen to model a rarer variant - most examples of this model were white with red spray-masked doors and front hatch, with a dark blue plastic engine cover. This one's blue instead of red, and has a yellow engine cover.

Decal on the rear panel, like the one on the bonnet of The Saint's Volvo, has been fake-aged. I've already expressed my views on this practice...

Base is pretty plain; I don't have an original to compare it to, but I'll guess it's broadly the same.

There was quite a clean original on the stall on Friday past, but I hadn't looked at it all that closely.

206991600_IMG_20210716_0746303.thumb.jpg.dcdd77cad1336fceb5627f931616dd3f.jpg

Also came with these little dudes.

986499735_IMG_20210717_1233502.thumb.jpg.a692d56a5ab52549a18f02338c545f76.jpg

Six of 'em, and looking a little shinier and bendier than the couple of originals I've had, but still quite a nice repro set.

Still trying to decide how much further I want to go with this mail-order collection...

I've got that in silver. I got it for £1 from ebay in 2015 as the description said the casting was cracked. It turns out it was just a casting line on the front wing. Nice big basic model, I wish Id had it as a kid.

id like to find its age

A parcel arrived yesterday, containing this...

162316439_HB076.thumb.jpg.c0fe9c0c8fa6032ffba325c390552506.jpg

1950 Studebaker in 1/18 scale.  So I put it in my 40s/50s/60s cabinet, to keep company with a 1950 Chevrolet Bel Air.

1635935571_HB077.thumb.jpg.caddc547600e91efb51028f751b14f64.jpg

Today I had a better idea.

667015213_HerbertLomStudebaker.jpg.bf493f9a604785a749c49d2c31cd2a0d.jpg

Herbert Lom drove one in the robbery scene, in The Ladykillers (1955).  Not quite the right blue, but it does mean the car now inhabits my Film/TV cabinet instead of the 50s set.

After that, some prep work took place.

1435794919_HB078.thumb.jpg.f81a6d8db32c88a65befaa9b29d9f287.jpg

The two Corgis were a right pain to drill.  As many of you will know, Corgi's rivets of the period tended to have lovely smooth heads.  Which of course are not easy to drill into, even starting with a very small pilot bit and working up.  Anyway I got there.  The Matchbox D-series came apart easy enough.  And then there was the Oxford Diecast Anglia van.  Only two rivets, and they have dished heads so I could get in, but the second one put up a fight.

1927392642_HB079.thumb.jpg.4e255c27c4c179d46bfc4c36e3978878.jpg

As you can see, I got it apart, but it came rather suddenly and with violence.  One of the axles flew off....

And I still haven't found it.  FFS, my back yard is tiny, there isn't anywhere for it to hide!  What this means is, they haven't made it to the caustic bath yet because I turned the fucking yard upside down looking for that escaped axle.  Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

I use a round burr tool in my Dremel to make a depression in the rivet first to help centre the drill. Stole the idea from one of the restorers on YouTube.

The axle will be somewhere impossible like on top of the bathroom cabinet. Got one of those magnet on a stick things to go "fishing" with?

didn't Fozzy Bear drive one of those Studebakers in "the great muppet movie" back  in the olden dayz?
