I bought a job lot off of eBay purely for this Escort which looks like a casting of a model @bunglebus has but it says Rainbow on the base.

It's the dempsey and makepeace escort. They also made a mk 2 granada.

Well scored, that looks in decent nick too. I can just about remember the car in the TV show...

Never seen the Rainbow version in real life, but I have an unfounded suspicion that the same casting was later appropriated and modified by MC Toy/ Maisto (ditto the Granada), and then later licenced to Corgi for their light and sound range...

It appeared in the gift set as shown above, and also as an individual model.

And they also did a bigger version with the top down and a friction motor...

I've not acquired that one either, people usually know what they are and price accordingly.

Quite strange to think Corgi ended up using Maisto cast-offs rather than the other way around!

I do have the Corgi

And MC Toys

Haven't yet found one with Maisto on the base, I reckon the Rainbow is the best looking of the lot (and doesn't have police lights on a soft top)

Isn’t it funny how as a kid a lot of your memories are about your hobbies. I can remember playing on the table in a pub in Filey when I’d be really young with a red MC toys Escort like that. Same holiday we picked up a Bburago Fiat Regatta in the toy shop. Even at that age I was fascinated with oddities like the Regatta rather than Ferrari’s etc...

I've been slowly working on this Dinky Mini Traveller, it started like this

20190813_16102720190813_16103220200707_093112

I don't know if I just have bad luck with Dinky castings, both this and the MK1 Escort I've tried to do about half a dozen times have the most awful marks that I can never seem to get rid of. I suspect the "restorer" who had a go at this one used a breeze block to rub it down. By some miracle most of the deep scars seem to have vanished under the Halfords paint. It's a 'mare to sand because of the raised "wood" areas. I have Steve Flowers glass to go in it, and the tyres have cleaned up. You can even read the base now! I need to find a brown permanent marker for the wood, which I think will be easier than trying to paint it, but for some reason brown Sharpies are 4X more than black.

Also need to paint all the silver bits in, so plenty of opportunity to bugger it up yet! Should look like this

Despite (mostly) not going on eBay, items continue to trickle in. A helpful hint for sellers, a taped-up carrier bag is the ideal packaging to protect carded diecasts. This one came with an ERTL farm implement of some sort and a MOY. I would give it the club hammer treatment but it's a 4.5 litre blower Bentley so I'll re-sell it.

it came with various bits including a Corgi digger I've not seen before

finally, Corgi Daimler bus, don't remember them having happy* passengers inside

Looks great! What do you do about the drilled out rivets to hold the base on?

Thanks - in this case the prior owner had pried the base over the rivet head, so a little bit of tidying and it'll be glued back on. Normally I'll drill them out with a 1.5 mm bit and tap with a 2mm, finally a tiny screw to hold the base on. Here's the Corvette I did a while ago

Via parcel, rather than a market find of course - but all thanks to @64A60 for this! It really is lovely.

One of those models I've had on my wantlist for literally decades now, so it's great to finally have one.

I had a great-aunt who owned a 100E way, way back in the 1960s. I'm not sure what happened to it, but I know she kept the gear stick as a poker for the fire, as I recall being fascinated by it as a kid.

Tat Parcels dispatched this afternoon for @RoadworkUK, @Noel Tidybeard,@BigMac,  and @eddyramrod - with any luck they should be with you early next week, thanks!

That really is a superb casting. It 100% captures the lines of the 100E.

I had an mc toys escort too. It was part of a gift set which also had a mk2 Granada and  group c racer, 911 etc. I did think there was some sort of link between those castings and corgi or matchbox.

I was really confused as a kid by the MC Toys stuff, as the wheels looked to be the same as the 'crown' wheels fitted to many Matchbox of the era... I sorta prided myself on being able to tell who'd made unfamiliar toy cars just by looking at the wheels, and that messed things up big time... at a guess, MC/Maisto bought some wheel injection tooling from Universal Toys who were also based in Macao at that time, possibly when they were shifting production to China - or maybe it was just a straight copy.

The Corgi Light & Sound range were bought in from Maisto, and so came with the same Matchbox-style wheels.

A Corgi with Matchbox wheels?

Madness.

FYI the Days Gone tyres fit the Dinky. It donated its steering wheel too.

I’m going to attempt to fabricate a windscreen from the Lego.
If it looks OK then Mrs Socket might be losing a pair of earrings for the headlights 😆

I never seem to have much luck with retapping the base, the post usually snaps. What screws do you use?

Just 2mm dome heads off ebay, about 3mm thread length.

M2-M2-5-M3-Button-Head-Screws-Allen-Socket-Bolts-Domed-Hex-A2-Stainless-Steel

Actually I now tend to use countersink ones that look less like rivets but have a bigger head so don't pull through the base - Corvette has this type

M2-M2-5-M3-M4-M5-Black-Alloy-Stainless-Steel-Countersunk-Allen-Nut-amp-Bolt-Screw

You do have to take care to drill straight and not snap the bit or burst the post. Found a few that are just too thin to risk, or so short that you'd end up going right out the other side of the body. In that case the superglue comes out.

Top tip! Rhinestones are cheap and come in lots of sizes, I have several sizes in stock as they're usually sold by the bagful

Can’t believe you’ve ruined that Lledo. They’re collectors items!!! 🤣

Seriously make sure you stamp on it repeatedly before it goes in the bin.
