SATURDAY MORNING TV SHOW SUPERHERO CORGI VAN CAPERS

Yes, I know these have had a feature or two before, but I had to get it out of my system.  It took long enough and more than a couple of mis-purchases to get good enough examples...

Oh look at those happy... etc

First-up, 'SPIDER-VAN' wearing the earlier style of wheel.

20201119_135245907_iOS.thumb.jpg.5508cef97dcfe7095affc33d653df359.jpg

Next-up, 'SUPERVAN', wearing the later wheel and my preference in label.  What, you ask?  Well, the earlier decoration was 'SUPERMAN', but it had to have 'VAN', to match the 'SPIDERVAN' wording.  Yes, the difference was dwelled-on a tad.

The internal SUPER-HERO LABORATORIES are the main reason for wanting these stupid vans in the first place

SPIDERMAN, on the other hand, has the WEB SCOPEs.  Scoping for Green Goblins, no doubt.

That's that, then.  Next time, if you can bear it, is back  to mundane reality with bottles of caffeine-infused pop.

Corgi really got their money's worth out of those vans, how many are there?

Having a Google I found the Superman (not Super Van)

image.thumb.png.0f642ce96aa6dc1123d74bc1dc5142bb.png

Found out what's missing from my circus van

image.png.6da1ae927d81681cf45a66fb9fc37e37.png

Then there's this, which seems to be the same as the Scooby-Doo release

image.png.552f80b61dd26699d0e129186724c1b6.png

Pretty sure at least one of you has this

image.thumb.png.ca53c3172a18f8cd86c3fc17c3755886.png

And this

image.thumb.png.be53782b509dbdf44adb64adadb244f5.png

Any more? I daren't get into the Juniors versions, that seems to have been Corgi's equivalent of the Matchbox Model A van with endless code 2/3 variations

SATURDAY AFTERNOON CORGI VANS SESSION

A pair of RED smiling faces.  Notice the not-so subtle differences in glazing tint, and clearly the tracking is out on these too.

20201119_135925531_iOS.thumb.jpg.f612f405095552fdc890706c1b2debb4.jpg

Penny pinching on the bumper paint on one.  So what delights hide inside?

20201119_135943007_iOS.thumb.jpg.521f19b5865c6ebb85806d5de77efc7f.jpg

Intriguing.  Store delivery, or contraband?

20201119_135948979_iOS.thumb.jpg.23b2a8736eed2e1bd464390b787c6e26.jpg

20201119_140025797_iOS.thumb.jpg.f97a37599dffe8d332ade3eaf39d766a.jpg

Well well.  A whole stock of caffeine-infused carbonated beverage.  Now I feel thirsty.

20201119_140055271_iOS.thumb.jpg.a3b44b0c1d89b160a50387098b5063ed.jpg

Yes, it's the Coca-Cola van!  I wonder how much Corgi paid for the trademark rights?  Or perhaps the Coca-Cola Company paid Corgi?

20201119_140009329_iOS.thumb.jpg.bf573c290f0b9af093f102e7e274ff1c.jpg

But what of the other red van?  It has a plain sheet roof, no skylights

20201119_140151666_iOS.thumb.jpg.3f40c9c7045727a5245b38b7b83a37ba.jpg

It's one of Her Majesty's mail delivery vans!  Notice it is a tampo-era van without any door apertures!  They don't make it easy for those Postal Workers.

20201119_140119099_iOS.thumb.jpg.38015209c5e7af4ecdea8af9a85f976b.jpg

But what's this?  Are the workers on strike, or was it a missed opportunity to decorate the interior with parcels?

20201119_140139657_iOS.thumb.jpg.1b3fe5130f1e2cdea19f52c785fc7a19.jpg

I'm leaning on the latter.

Footnote:  a hand-drawn poster.  Why go to the bother when printing photography had improved so much?

Yes that's the lot.  For my sins, I have (or had) them all, including 4 (four!) working order Radio vans.  Even bought some pre-made alternative stickers from the States.  It's a burden.  I am not going to follow the Juniors too.  Still would like to fondle the GOLDEN EAGLE one for a bit though.

For the Corgi Juniors, the golden find is the one that was only sold in the James Bond 007 'Spy Who Loved Me' Gift Set: The JAWS van.  eBay seller wanted £10 for this, loose.  Didn't sell (despite my offers), so he stuck it back on as auction.  And I got it for £1.90 !  I know he wasn't happy.

CB4A16A4-8E7F-4415-9C97-86F2B7015CA0.jpeg.cbfd35a92c6fa4d13152647091dae819.thumb.jpeg.a8fd250b7cf74c9d8b5cb4002e2a78ad.jpeg

In the film, the Jaws character really drove a Sherpa.  But surely the glamour would be lost on an 8-year old.  Silver Chevrolets for the win.

FURTHER SATURDAY AFTERNOON CORGI TV CRIME-BUSTING CHARACTER VANS.  They continued to sell the larger-scale Charlie's Angels van in enough quantity to resurrect it two decades later, alongside these two new releases to appeal the more 'mature' collector market

Oh look at those smiling faces with interesting adornments.  But look!  Much more care to the detailing - and a number plate too

20201119_140701317_iOS.thumb.jpg.593fa95077ec341833ad6546996ef53d.jpg

Likewise at the rear.  Lights picked-out perfectly, never seen before on Corgi Chevrolet vans; even though the A-TEAM really used a GMC Vandura and SCOOBY DOO a G-10 series Chevrolet

20201119_140720863_iOS.thumb.jpg.613e1eda7f390893524776a9657e468b.jpg

The A-TEAM van added a bull-bar, continued the striping across a rear roof spoiler, a light brow fitted to the roof front and also red wheel centres.  The bull-bar was fixed at the bottom through the rivets, however the roof items were fixed through mounting holes, most likely drilled rather than part of the casting.  I'm afraid it was me who added the extra stickers - they came off a tatty ERTL van.  Not quite sure why either.

20201119_140755586_iOS.thumb.jpg.ca31e79184523e341a5a0063282de4ef.jpg

But what awaited inside?  FACE carrying-on with a lady?  MR-T tied up, comatose and ready for a flight?  Sadly, nothing but dark, foreboding space

20201119_140831521_iOS.thumb.jpg.1d9b0bc856a332a8f1e348f9d672e9c5.jpg

The chassis was plain, owing nothing to the extra effort made above

20201119_141002882_iOS.thumb.jpg.3c6335e8f960632576ce6353322451fc.jpg

But what of the MYSTERY MACHINE?  Authentic* cartoon decoration and two roof bars fixed in different places to the A-TEAM mount holes.  Grey tyres to complete the cartoon image

20201119_140853497_iOS.thumb.jpg.c24533c17698dd0b742955c4670e1bc0.jpg

But what's inside?  Scooby Snacks?  A tied-up de-hooded villain?  No.  Darkness.

20201119_140925852_iOS.thumb.jpg.b061f0fc4a44e46aa1274a88476eadde.jpg

Chassis a different moulding again, this time with trademarking

20201119_141009091_iOS.thumb.jpg.395155f7839c937f7cd898accd486032.jpg

The vans both came boxed with out-of-scale figures, but in reality most of the them never left the boxes and are still stored in attics owned by 50-year-old men from Connecticut.  Probably.

But - the Mystery Machine does feature door handles and door shut lines, unlike the other panel vans, both solid roof and window roof types.

EDIT: what's the other side like? Does it have a sliding door picked out, like the ambulance version - or just as smooth?

Afraid not.  But notice that the earlier 'stickers' casting was used in the brochure page above

So if anyone happens to have or spot an orange Hondarora...

20201121_122957.jpg

I knew I had Hondarora from childhood.  So went and had a rummage (instead of getting on with removing the AR-TEX in the bedroom - she'll hit the roof when she returns from Sainsbury's)

Ok. Hondarora as suspected has long gone, but do have the similar 'Police' Honda and rider.  Well, two of them in fact, so rolled them out onto the GENUINE Matchbox 'Motor Cycle Trailer', being towed by a Citroen SM, no less

With the panier and rider removed, its almost there - then realised they did two different castings!  One with fixed front fork and Hondarora with hinge - all these years...etc.  Then the Police riders started practicing for next month's display team show.

SUNDAY EVENING LOUDHAILING CORGI CHEVROLET VAN RACKET

Might as well put these side-by-side.  Oh look at their happy smiling faces and noisy head gear

20201119_140228962_iOS.thumb.jpg.fe64038eda5ed068c91a8649afdcf999.jpg

On the left, the PINDER JEAN RICHARD Circus Booking Office.  On the right, the RADIO TELE LUXEMBOURG Roadshow.

20201119_140231930_iOS.thumb.jpg.7aa1dcb29ed7b0a6ee9a55ce55089cde.jpg

You can hear it now: 'Roll up! Roll Up!  Get your evening performance tickets here!'  Except, it would really be heard in French, as this arm of the Pinder circus family is based in France, not Scotland.  Either way you'd hardly understand a word from the over-amplified distortion.

20201119_140248260_iOS.thumb.jpg.431e8cb7724b7742f7a63b10aec7546b.jpg

The Radio van is just that: a radio.  Or rather, an AM receiver, powered by a PP3 battery (showing my age) in the chassis and it works too!  The on/off switch and volume (audible enough) is controlled by a rotating wheel.  Quality is similar to something found in Radio Shack back in 1979.  Apparently, 'Marciano' has just scored a goal, the commentator just said on Talk Sport.

20201119_140303107_iOS.thumb.jpg.aebbd54db0a84be708f39367fa6ae318.jpg

The rears have been covered before: the booking office steps and canopy, the word 'BILLETS' under a surly-looking lady confirming its frenchness; whereas the radio has a tuning dial saying 'TUNING', in case of confusion.

As I also like collecting 1:87 vehicles, I happened to win a job lot of these AMW Seat Toledo's last week off ebay.

All finished in Silver and still sealed in there boxes. They seam a pretty decent casting but not as crisp as a Herpa or Rietze model in my opinion.

If anybody wants one, I have 2 available for £5 each posted?

My sister gave me a redundant shelving unit so I've rehomed my 1/76 cars on it. Top shelf is all Oxford Diecast, mostly British cars. Below them are overflow Oxfords, Tomytec and other odds and ends - 3D printed, conversions, restorations and kit builds. The eagle-eyed may spot a few new arrivals too.

IMG_20201122_151421180.thumb.jpg.3137eb06c0ef616107100303a4074f9a.jpg

I need a new power cable for the TV as that one is annoyingly slightly too short to go behind the shelves.

Picked this up.  Clearly a gen-3 Chevrolet Camaro, although with portly proportions.

20201121_192928785_iOS.jpg.a7b1fc73da90f8f95c6e48db6ae6d383.jpg

It's plastic throughout.   It scales to 1:31 length and 1:28 width, confirming the portliness.  So, approx 1:29

20201121_192932640_iOS.jpg.2ea6c30af06381f5531a1bf2dc937376.jpg

Never seen it in any Matchbox catalogue.  Dated 1987.  Was there a series it belongs to?  Sellers tend to imply they are a rare find, I would probably agree.

Excuse my childish giggles when I read it. I blame being stuck indoors for too long.  Google shows a few of these, referred to as Matchbox 'Special' and 1/32nd scale.  No other details though and I think the 'Special' may be just a seller's description. I've certainly not seen or heard of these before.

So what are those new arrivals I hinted at. Some recent stuff from Oxford Diecast, like this TX5 elecrotaxi.

Electaxi

and blue van man

Blue Transit

Fire up the Quattro! This is wrong in exactly the opposite way to Gene's car (pre-facelift with a later reg).

Fire up the Quattro!

<Dennis Waterman>Oooh, that's a nice Capri</Dennis Waterman>

Terry's Capri

Another nice Capri. Aquatic Jade is a great colour but a bit hard to photograph.

Aquatic Jade

Also a great colour, Purple Velvet but I'm not sure it's quite right. Still nice though and it's a 1300E so it'll be worth eleventy hundred bazillion pounds.

Purple Velvet

Finally got a Cararama Punto :) Still looking for a Ka though as I got outbid on the one he had.

Fiat Punto

A funky pink Demio is a suitable consolation prize though

Mazda Demio

Legacy is a bit battered but was cheap

Subaru Legacy

So nostalgia, idle thumbs, eBay, rum and this bloody thread conspired against me 😉

Incoming Corgi....

Along with Honda & BL, the blue oval choose Corgi for some new model launches with the Escort III - project codename Erika - and the Cortina replacing Sierra - project codename Toni.

Both accurately modelled with opening doors and detailed interiors (with moving seat backs too) additionally an opening tailgate and even more impressively matching aero wheel trims on the Sierra.

Each baseplate is very accurately detained, the Sierra being plastic the Escort metal. Note the Sierra gets the exact badging moulded in the floorpan.

But there was another reason these two appealed - the Ford packaging - I have never seen the Escort one before - anyone else? The Escort is 70’s corgi size, and is the model is  loose - no plastic wheel tabs under the cardboard line the Sierra.

Picked this up.  Clearly a gen-3 Chevrolet Camaro, although with portly proportions.

It's plastic throughout.   It scales to 1:31 length and 1:28 width, confirming the portliness.  So, approx 1:29

Never seen it in any Matchbox catalogue.  Dated 1987.  Was there a series it belongs to?  Sellers tend to imply they are a rare find, I would probably agree.

It's from this, Matchbox big movers set. Now you have another transporter to find - one for sale near me for £15

Note the model insignia on the tailgates:

Each baseplate is very accurately detained, the Sierra being plastic the Escort metal. Note the Sierra gets the exact badging moulded in the floorpan.

But there was another reason these two appealed - the Ford packaging - I have never seen the Escort one before - anyone else? The Escort is 70’s corgi size, and is the model is  loose - no plastic wheel tabs under the cardboard line the Sierra.

1300E had rectangular headlights & spotlights pedant mode off.
