Another example of Smoll Eddy's wheel swapping exploits is this 70's skyline.

One of my favourite castings, but let down by the wheels.

Eddy generously offered to replace them with a set he had down the lock up.

Looks much better now Smoll Eddy!!

Erm......don't you mean JDM Smoll Eddy?

"You have your hobbies and I have mine M8"

More superfun time in the post this morning... further additions to the exponentially growing Corgi 1/36 collection...

Mmm... It's the Mercedes Benz 240D with caravan, otherwise known as Gift Set 24 from the Corgi 1975 catalogue.

Now, all I really wanted was the Merc in blue, but for some reason the single vehicles listed in well-known online auctions were more expensive than this full car and caravan combo. Go figure.

I had a decent caravan before, but sold it on. Which was a pity, as this one has a busted tow hitch.

Strange that the caravan came with a numberplate, but the car never did.

Still, the Mercedes is in pretty good shape, all told. There's a few small marks on the paintwork, and a bit of wear to the chrome plated parts, but it's plenty good enough.

This happens to be a replacement for one I lost around 1990... well, I say lost.

What happened was, my brother (in P1 at the time) announced one morning - while actually on his way out the door - that he had to bring something into school for the Blue Table.

(Dunno if that was something anyone else had to do in infants school - bring in a colour-themed item that would be grouped with others on a table for a week, and discussed at some point. I think.)

My mother, put on the spot rather, ran upstairs and grabbed the first blue thing she could find - my Corgi Mercedes 240D, which happened to be on my bedside table. Which then found itself on the Blue Table - and, almost immediately afterwards, found itself being stolen by a five-year-old delinquent called Lester.

I was raging: at the thieving little shite in my brother's class; at my mother for having lifted one of my favourite cars; at my brother for being gormless and not having remembered in advance to find something blue that wasn't mine.

Finally, thirty years later, I have my replacement.

Although, weirdly, in my memory this was a lighter shade of blue, and not metallic.

But that's okay.

Also, something that intrigued me in the listing for this one was the assurance that it "includes boot luggage". Now, I know that some earlier Corgis came with little plastic suitcases and the like, but I didn't think ones of this era came with such things. But hey, I'm all for accessories.

But on investigating...

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd call a block of wood jammed in the boot 'luggage'...

The rule used to be never take anything to school you would mind losing. Some thieving twat nicked my Superkings Jaguar XJ6 Police Car at primary school.

We had a sort of concrete car track built into a bank, thinking back it was a big bank of screed with some roadways troweled into it, bridges made from timber and tunnels from drain trunking. I suppose we were lucky to have such a facility but on the other hand thinking back the latent light fingered nature of the wider community made it something you couldn’t actually enjoy.

Thinking on some wanker deliberately scraped the side of my Rover Sterling on the concrete causeway edge. I really did go to school with some contemptuous wankers thinking back. Fortunately karma had it’s way with the Rover, the kid that did it now works as an estate agent which goes some way toward the theory some people are actually born wankers.

One of my oldest friends became an Estate agent.  Ran his own agency in Swansea for a decade, then sold the business and retired age 47.   Now lives in a £2M house at Mumbles and potters about in a modern Ferrari that does his back in

It's quite old (1983),but has some great pictures

I used to have that, probably not long after it was published. Used to fascinate me as a kid but I don't know where mine went. Might still be at my mum's

I had that too and like yours it went missing years ago.  Shame, as I always enjoyed dipping into it.

i had this EXACT set as a wee nipper,

been born in 1974 i will have got it new.

and i remember that car came in the dark navy blue as above and in a lighter more pastel shade of blue too.

it will have come in lots of different shades too as i think it was a long lived feature of the catalogue, just like the real things!

Ah, that's good to know... all the online listings seemed to show the same metallic blue, but in my mind it was definitely a lighter shade - guess sometimes they just used whatever was in the paint tanks! Another version to look out for, then...

The Merc wasn't the only thing to show up yesterday, mind - a package also arrived from @64A60

(and if you haven't checked out his sales thread, you really should.)

From the far side of the Iron Curtain comes this Soviet delight:

Yup, it's a VAZ 2102, better known here as the Lada 1300.

The shape is pretty much bob-on; and shut lines are every bit as approximate as you'd find on the real thing. Plus it weighs a ton; probably due to all that lead in the paint.

This one is in really nice nick; I bought a fair few of these former USSR models from market stalls in the mid-1990s, when there seemed to be an importer's glut of them. Some I sold on, some I kept, and a few turned to dust while in storage as the dreaded zinc pest got hold of them. Tragically, my Lada was one of them, so it's nice to have a replacement. No signs of cracking or crazing on this one!

Boxes like these are brilliant in their depictions of everyone's favourite workers' paradise.

Other side displays prominent disclaimers that it's definitely not a toy, since it's flimsy, sharp, toxic and (probably) radioactive.

Again, just like the real thing etc etc.

I'm still not sure what the red light on the engine is meant to represent, but overall this is a very pleasing model that I'm delighted to have as part of the collection.

And as well as the Lada, how about this slice of equally unfashionable chod in the same parcel?

285701630_IMG_20201017_2159372.thumb.jpg.a51683d1867227983285ae28227343c5.jpg

Mmmm, it's one of those mid-2000s IXO magazine partworks from France, which I didn't even know existed - so I had to have it.

Looking a bit like an over-inflated Hillman Avenger, the Chrysler 180/ 2 Litre is on my all-time AS hitlist as one of those cars that has virtually no redeeming features to recommend it, either now or when new, but I'd still love one. I did see one in France over 20 years ago, but never one in the UK. Since a real one is unlikely, I'll have to make do with this for now. Wheels look a bit big, but otherwise this is a well detailed model that'll sit nicely with my Talbot Tagora and frogmouth Ford Scorpio on the shelf of marque flagship ignominy.

@Datsuncog The red light on the Lada probably represents the carburettor fire that was about to engulf the real one!  Seriously though, excellent choices there.  One of our Lada estates was almost the same blue as your model (Adriatic, 1983; RTB 52Y).

Those genuine Soviet era models are fantastic.

I first saw them when my friend Euan got a Volga and a Moskvich  in the late 1980s. I thought the detail was tremendous at the time and the box artwork and Cyrillic language was mystical.

Quite a few have come and gone in my collection and thankfully only two have suffered from Zinc Pest.

At the moment I have:

Lada Riva 2017 (In my glass case not to be touched at the doors and bonnet are fatigued.

Moskvich Aleko

Moskvich 412 estate

Volga 3102

Zil Limousine, 1980s type, I forget the model number

I also have quite a few other later Soviet models by Welly and a partwork Zhiguli I got from Eddy a few years ago.

The original Soviet ones are my favourite.

I should have kept my others though:

VAZ 2101 estate in 'Rally Support' livery, KAMAZ truck, GAZ Chaika, Aeroflot Moskvich, Lada 2101 saloon, a Samara and a Lada Nova with real coil spring suspension!

I had another ZIL limousine which fell apart.

I'll need to go and look out the ones I have now!

Saw forum member doobiedoo's car at the Harpenden show and I think at NEC, but that was some years ago.  I did wonder where he got to - no longer part of AS unless undergone a name change.  Known for his Tagora 'collection' and a superb metallic green Simca 1100 GLS

I haven't quite worked out the appeal of the HW ID series.

They say

Quote

the Hot Wheels™ id Race Portal will record the progress and activity of your uniquely identifiable car for your Hot Wheels™ id app.

But I doubt that will happen.  I bet they will just stay in the boxes in the attic conversions of 50 year old men from Connecticut.

Well lots of people race Hot Wheels, probably more in the states though. I like them as they have much nicer paint etc, and if you collect a certain casting you need the ID one for completeness.
