sierraman
Not a lot of people (including my wife) know this but I’ve a scrapyard in the top shelf of my wardrobe. Probably where some nice clothes should live, instead a collection of dead Matchboxes live there. Found a Corgi ‘mechanic’ the other day perhaps he could be my 1/76 alter ego. But what to call him? MarvinsMom
here are my most recent additions. starting with the stalled, for now Daimler SP250,this has now got paint that i'm happy with, but still lacks its steering wheel and windscreen. these were ordered at the beginning of July, and as of now, they are still to be delivered. well nothing to do about it other than wait. it will make actually finishing the bloody thing even sweeter! as is typical with Spot-ons the casting is gorgeous. hence why i have had to have a couple of goes with the paint on it. i have also recently added this, a Corgi TK tipper. this came from a bootsale as spotted by mr armishtat. its got a busted windscreen and was missing a tyre. i found a replacement in the spares box which isn't quiet the right diameter, and now its on the hub, i cannot get it back off! it will do. i'm conflicted as to whether or not to replace the glazing unit, as to change that i'll have to take the wagon apart. maybe i will, maybe i won't, either way,its currently satin the back of this repainted lowloader. and then on too something much smaller, the matchbox Ford Prefect bought from this very thread via Mr tenmillsocket. isn't it a lovely little thing? i have a number of Matchboxes, and, though this may be a heresy, i really do prefer the earlier cars. the later speedwheels been so outsized just ruin them for me. it also came with a little resto project, this mark 2 jag. its was missing its bonnet and most of its paint. the bonnet isn't a part that Steve Flowers carries, fortunately another trader on fleabay has it listed. while it doesn't fit too well, and will not open cos the hinges are too short, it does fill the hole caused by the original one been MIA. sadly though the lovely detail in the engine bay is now covered up. the colour scheme is an homage to Withnail and I. even if i have painted in BOTH headlamps. well, it was either that or an Inspector Morse one, and i was keen on trying out the tin of grey paint! then more recently i managed to come across these 2 for sale, first off a matchbox Vauxhall Cresta, this is a miniature of the same body style as my Corgi Velox. so i can only assume that the name is more like a trim level rather than a different model, like fords "3 Graces" the Consul, Zephyr and Zodiac? if that is so, then were Vauxhalls the Velox, Wyvern and Cresta? some knowledgeable person will i'm sure will know ! its had a hard life, but still looks lovely in its 2-tone paint. and i also found this, a pre-budgie toys Wolseley 6-80 police car. its pre-budgie cos the base plate is spelt "Wolsely"! this one is spotless, really, really spotless! some one has it seems really loved it. and now it will be loved by me! hard to think that these tidderly little toy cars both date from the mid 1950s, making them 65 years old! is that why we collect these things? maybe,,,,, thing is, these new additions are filling up the display case to such a level that it looks like even more trains will up been evicted. an excuse, as if one was needed to buy another cabinet! bunglebus, Tenmil Socket, Burnside and 9 others
bunglebus
Some lovely little cars there, I do like the charm of the early Matchbox and I have a few, but I remember playing with 70s-80s releases (with some older regular wheels), so these have the most nostalgic appeal to me. Like this. I know the colour isn't right but it's come out well and the dags look happy in the back. Velox and Cresta were the Zephyr and Zodiac equivalents, with sixes up front, so yes, the difference was largely trim levels. Nice collection! junkyarddog
I have to agree, the Matchbox Ford Prefect is utterly charming. It's a favourite of mine for sure. Smoll Eddy's favourite is the Matchbox Morris Minor. Why Smoll Eddy? "Because I look huge standing beside one M8" Or at least normal size Smoll Eddy. quicksilver
A recent trip to Halfords revealed some interesting colours on the clearance shelf so I tried them out on the last three of the whitemetal 50s British saloons I acquired last year. I do like these kits, nice and simple to put together but they turn out well with some careful detailing. Daimler Conquest - Volkswagen Dragon Green Sunbeam Talbot 90 - Ford Aztec Bronze Standard Vanguard - Ford Tuscan Beige The Tuscan Beige wasn't actually from the recent trip, I found it at the back of a shelf in the garage and have no idea why we had it. I thought it looked disgusting when I first applied it, but with the blue roof and chrome trim it's turned out quite pleasant. Why 'Tuscan Beige' though? Tuscany is hardly noted for its beigeness. Datsuncog
Continuing to go through the attic boxes this week in a effort to catalogue what I've actually got in the collection... I've four of these IKEA boxes for my 1/43 stuff... Plus a load of other boxes for bigger scale, smaller scale and loose stuff. Plus what's in the display cabinets. Plus what's at the bottom of the wardrobe, from the Friday tat market. I don't think I'm exempt from the creeping feeling of dread that seems to be engulfing a few of us on here... I used to get that, then I moved and acquired a large loft. Fear of having too much tat is nowhere near as bad as the "why did I sell that?" Regret. However I did manage to resist new Matchbox multipacks; The unique to pack 59 Chevy wagon is a different colour in each of the 9 packs But I did have a couple of arrivals awaiting me on my return from Tesco; This was lurking among a load of fairly average 70s Matchbox in a job lot, 1968 HW Beatnik Bandit. I don't really go out of my way looking for these as I have all of the original 16 cars, but when I spot one at way below market price I can't resist Found a really nice early Superfast Fastback Regular wheels Zody is restorable with new glass I think I'm guessing this is early Lesney/Matchbox? bunglebus
I like spotting stuff that either wasn't released or was changed significantly beforehand, not seen the custom vans in those colours (P44) or a black Vantastic (P41). That last definitely looks pre-pro going by the windows. The Rover SD1 on P43 is absolutely a resin model. I know I've mentioned it before, but did any Volvo estates exist with round headlights and a detailed number plate, or was it just a re-touched photo? flat4alfa
Whilst digging out the Ford Thames, I found out that Dinky Nash Rambler repaint, that got parked. Looking at the state of the glazing, no wonder Painted in homage of the 1957 Rambler Rebel, at its time the fastest sedan car in the US market, and second only in a 0-60mph sprint with the Corvette. Metallic silver with gold-anodized side trim was the sole colour offered Made some clumsy mistakes in the detailing and lost the will Well, it seemed a good idea at the time Amishtat, BL Bloke, Dick Longbridge and 3 others
Amishtat
Tat Wednesday was a bit of a busted flush today, largely because I didn’t have that much money with me and that was gone in one atavistic moment with one seller before I'd gone more than about thirty paces. As luck would have it I genuinely didn’t see very much else of interest so it was just as well perhaps. Oddly enough this was one of two models which cropped up in conversation with Bunglebus last week. I believe this to be based around a 1961 or 62 Pontiac but Eddy Ramrod will probably know more about it. Amishtat
The same seller also had this. I have a nice boxed yellow civilian example so despite not really needing it, it was just too nice to leave behind. Front number plate barely hanging on but fairly presentable otherwise. Amishtat
And finally this, the other thing Bunglebus and I spoke about. Not much of a VW fan in any scale but this is possibly the only one I'd like a full size example of (not likely on my wages however.. ) Genuinely surprised to find a spare wheel still occupying the front luggage area, albeit kind of pointless with no tyre. eddyramrod
You are correct sir, 1961 Pontiac chassis. This would be what GM called the Professional chassis, with a longer wheelbase than was available to the public. Body w as coachbuilt by Superior, hence the name on the base.
