Shite in Miniature II

As I was sifting through the collection last night, I ended up questioning whether I still owned a specific model. I've thinned out the number of models I own over the years but don't specifically remember selling this one. It was a mint and boxed Dinky NSU RO80 with working lights. I always liked it and would be surprised if it had been included in the cull. Anyone else find they have sold things but don't actually remember doing it? If course, it may be in the other storage box or deep under this lot. I CBA to empty everything right now but will look another time.

Moving on, here's an oddity...

20200731_154323.thumb.jpg.45a115909be03ec80da779b8ec008b8c.jpg

20200731_154339.thumb.jpg.6fcf4f024bb8cb86ba7b5792a4216166.jpg

It's not often that Tomica models show up in a tat box, and this one's seen some heavy use.

20200731_154418.thumb.jpg.7751ae51f54fabca608243144ce8ef44.jpg

If anyone can make use of this slightly slab-sided Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, with wonky wheels, 10p will secure it.

Also less common is this 1970s Saviem crane truck by Majorette - not one I've ever seen before.

20200731_154149.thumb.jpg.66d411a73eb9f899357c617190c6628c.jpg

Sadly the jib's gone missing. I kinda felt I couldn't leave it in there - 10p, anyone?

Also an unfamiliar Majorette is this:

20200731_154233.thumb.jpg.2d67874d2616dbd356e0e7ea5cfc1bde.jpg

Nope, I didn't know they did motorbikes either,

Some light Googling indicates that this is the 203-C Police Motorcycle, based on a Honda 750 but missing the rider and one of the handlebar pegs, annoyingly.

All the Ebay and Etsy listings for these that I can find seem to have ended, so I can't work out if it's $$$uper-rare or just more tat from the depths.

For 20p, you can find out yourself...

I also dug up this Siku low-loader trailer, but an exhaustive rummage did not reveal the tractor unit.

20200731_155807.thumb.jpg.239d1d03bfab73ccb9f83edb6b098162.jpg

Some marks to it, but otherwise perhaps some use to someone?

20p takes it!

An now, moving firmly into crap territory...

20200731_154306.thumb.jpg.862ecb53b94a619410120dd120624333.jpg

A Realtoy Audi A4, and two Wellys - VW Cabrio and an Audi R8.

I've no real emotional tug towards these, but figured that the Welly rims and tyres might be useful to someone for a custom build.

10p each!

In a similar vein...

20200731_154653.thumb.jpg.72d0152f4690518b3f97f963d445f67d.jpg

A load of no-names - the red SUV doesn't even have an identifiable real-life counterpart, though I suspect it's been heavily 'inspired' by the BMW X5.

20200731_154711.thumb.jpg.9cd6f9353253df34acc845c21d46ac8a.jpg

Those bizarre Canadian Transit peelermobiles tend to crop up pretty often; I think someone on here did a decent job converting one into a camper recently? The SWAT armoured car is another won't-someone-think-of-the-children horror, and may have come bundled with the Transit when new.

10p on any of these, too.

And rounding up the Far Eastern delights, here's what looks like a Hino tanker for pumping out septic tanks (always a popular play scenario) by Welly...

20200731_155746.thumb.jpg.b3729621404cb01bdd1251149fdd9264.jpg

With a rather nicely-done Ford pickup by Welly also, plus a no-name (but quite tidily done) Mazda RX7 FC - I suspect also completing the Welly hat-trick here, even if it doesn't say so on the base.

Tenpence a throw, guv?

As an aside, the Ford pickup and Mazda had these labels attached...

20200731_155847.thumb.jpg.ad93ca128b2d962413ada3e052c4057e.jpg

...so I think that begins to unravel the mystery of where a lot of this tat comes from - it's those big boxes o' crap that turn up at auctions, usually from house  clearances. I guess that explains where all the rest of the stuff on the Charity Stall comes from.

Gaah! My excuse - it was late and it had been a long day. Kind of missed the big F O R D lettering on the front...

Of course, bloody forgot that as well! It had a Leopard as a co-star!

i518311.jpg.a3810a7c51f25373f5a7084d12fb9ac9.jpg

As can be seen, Kings were the shiters choice of coach travel in Middlesbrough. That's without mentioning their fleet of beige/brown velour 1980s VanHools and Neoplans...

7204 DD ain't no Leopard; IMCDB is wrong and it was another Ford R-series. OMG thread drift but Kings' pair of Setra Imperial double-deck coaches became quite legendary: bought new in 1984 and still working when they closed down 30 years later. A964 HVN was preserved and infamously got stuck at the muddy Woburn Showbus 2015, causing miles of tailbacks right through the village. Look at the shiteyness of the livery too - beige, brown and orange!

Here's a couple more US scenes, which I'm quite happy with:

50121116346_415213fdf9_b.jpg

This photo has quite a high contrast range, with dark patches in the foliage, yet almost overexposed cars. Think I got the proportions about right here but I'm finding that the real letdown is quite often the 'ground' I'm selecting, which almost always doesn't match up with the scene.

50121116446_f8dc057a13_b.jpg

This one's a bit better though, as it could be a road/forecourt difference in shading - if you disregard the previous photo, using the same location!

50121116311_cf669b9b72_b.jpg

I'm quite happy with this one, though - the bent rear axle of the Mercedes gives the impression of it squatting away under a bit of acceleration, as it leaves the pumps. The BMW '02 also ties in with the Germanic subject, so it doesn't look too incongruous. Apologies if it sounds like I'm taking this all rather too seriously but I'm genuinely enjoying dabbling with this kind of thing at the moment, especially as work is non-existent for me at the moment. Titting about with stuff like this when the weather's too bad to get productive stuff done outside is keeping my existential crisis at bay, although thankfully there does seem to be some work on the horizon.

That said, something arrived in the post the other day which will be perfect for these photos, so I'll hopefully get some scenes set up next week. Here's a sneak peak of it:

50174763102_f8f6702710_b.jpg

If you could work it out from that^^, I'd almost be tempted to give it away as a prize! Almost....

Heh, all the time... though there's also the flipside of kicking myself for having got rid of something, only to later find it in a box... hope your Ro80 turns up!

Some fantastic items in your toy box there, in cracking shape. Did you manage to get the weird crusty stuff off the glazing on the Corgi Capri?

Now, moving back onto the good stuff... while creating yet more mystery about the diecast dynamics within the market.

All the Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Welly and Majorette items above were extracted from this rather unpromising-looking crate of plasticky rubbish:

20200731_111340.thumb.jpg.70ca73a957544af3ae0ca291511f84e2.jpg

And, once I'd filled my bag (which came to 32 items, for an agreed fiver), I cast my eye over the rest of the stall... and lit on some Corgi and Lesney Matchbox that definitely hadn't been there earlier.

What's even odder is that some of these are unquestionably the same items which were on the Tat Stall back in early March; begging the question of what were they suddenly doing here?

Now, regulars here may recall my puffed-up outrage when Charity Blokey scooped up all the £3 boxed buses from Market Blokey back in December, and then put them on his own stall for £10 each... so clearly there's some sort of trading agreement. Also when some repainted and messily glue-gun reassembled tinplate trucks appeared on both stalls in the same week, clearly the handiwork of the same enthusiastic individual.

But since Market Blokey seems to have no problem with squirreliing stuff away for months at a stretch before bringing it back to the stall again, I can't believe he was in a wild hurry to get shot of these Lesneys. Especially as he had them at anywhere between £3 to £5 each, on different weeks.

I managed to procure the lot from Charity Blokey for a fiver - yup, a pound each.

And I'm assuming he's not runniing a loss here.

So, what is there?

20200731_152523.thumb.jpg.f083b5ba1583df0199c801c9bad4ce8d.jpg

Well, a much-used but complete K-3 Hatra Mechanical Shovel, for one.

Again, something I could have used with my big ol' heaps of sand and topsoil a few weeks back. The nylon 'hydraulics' have worn so the scoop and arm won't support themselves in the upright position any longer, but it's still a very finely detailed toy, and certainly not trashed. In fact, the level of weathering looks about right. I do like this, and will be holding on to it for now, anyway.

Then we have another K-2 KW Dart tipper, this one in much better cosmetic condition than the one I picked up a few weeks back.

20200731_152542.thumb.jpg.7fc5c7786669acb510a464f096647bad.jpg

All tyres are present and correct (if typically loose) and unlike the other one, the exhaust stack over the engine is still there.

The only problem seems to be that the cradle casting has snapped on one side - so although the tipper is still secured in place by the hydraulic arm, it all goes a bit strange if you try to tip the rear load area.

20200731_152605.thumb.jpg.ff68f92fbcdff75b39638a8c36d6edeb.jpg

However, possibly a dab of Chemical Metal or something might bond it? Otherwise, it's a really lovely piece. Generally I'm not much into construction vehicles, but I'm getting quite a lot of enjoyment from reappraising the late-1960s King Size range.

Also from the same era is this K-20 Ford D-Series tractor unit, missing its trailer and tractor load.

20200731_152622.thumb.jpg.a551240519b1eeff0944c12f74842659.jpg

I was very torn back in early March over this one, as the superglue all over the top of the glazing unit kinda put me off.

20200731_152638.thumb.jpg.f4bcabca8694c3dec08db837341ae51a.jpg

But with hindsight... the time was right.

Here's the same Ford on the Tat Stall back in March, as it happens, together with the Hatra and also the Scammell Crane Truck that I snaffled three weeks ago.

20200306_125540.thumb.jpg.205a2cc9138eceaba1d6c43954a4f552.jpg

The Claas combine harvester, Dodge road train and some of the others here have also shown up on the Tat Stall recently - hopefully they'll pop up again.

But I was very pleased to have nabbed these, anyway. While flicking through my copy of the 1970 Matchbox catalogue, it's nice to have the real things on hand... I can see this forming the nucleus of a new collection.

Then there was this:

20200731_152312.thumb.jpg.e8acf2d8897289a218d9482c437b3522.jpg

A Corgi Major trailer that would have been paired with the Ford H-Type tractor unit.

Even with the sliding plastic side pieces, this is a weighty item.

20200731_152506.thumb.jpg.ed7e2c4194d0c923545d5eddcc160bca.jpg

One rear door is missing, annoyingly, but it's still a cracker.

20200731_152349.thumb.jpg.eee9c357a3e363a1300603484d745a91.jpg

I was particularly impressed with the bogey unit, which has a rather clever floating system to give each axle independent movement. Probably quite unnecessary, but a nice touch on the part of Corgi's design team. I think some of these trailer casting components were still being used into the 1990s on the Corgi Classics range.

And I'm sure purists will spit out their weak lemon drink at this point, but...

20200731_152437.thumb.jpg.97d5623c18736626ada9044a2a267272.jpg

I reckon the Matchbox tractor unit and Corgi trailer display ok together, even if their couplings are incompatible - at least until I can find the correct counterparts. Both are staying.

Lastly, the fifth item was this Corgi tipping farm trailer, which appeared in the late 1950s and was still seeing service twenty years later in agriculturally themed gift sets.

20200731_152700.thumb.jpg.2057a8fc213b4ac7b195604c82ff74f4.jpg

It's missing its rear tipping door and the towhitch has been snapped off, but this one's for sale if anyone's interested - I'll happily set it aside at 50p for you.

And, as a sort of grand finale, I also retrieved this astonishing beast from the tat box:

20200731_160912.thumb.jpg.3c1bf52789dcf426e9a9b139fd218945.jpg

It appears to be a 1950s Grand Prix Racer, possibly along the lines of an Alfa Romeo Alfetta (?), in glorious plastic by 'Tudor Rose'. Driver seems to have gone for a Woodbine and quick nip of brandy, in the best tradition of sportsmen of the era.

20200731_161058.thumb.jpg.a6369b04342ea360fd9219eb9710d889.jpg

Some more quick Google-Fu indicates the following (from the Victoria & Albert Museum, no less)...

Quote

Tudor Rose is a British company who were based in Wales. They appear to have specialised in making small dolls, as well as lots of other plastic toys. They sold their dolls at Woolworths, although all their dolls were quite cheap to buy. However very little is known about the company considering how much they made.

Tudor Rose was a trademark of Rosedale Plastics. The Tudor Rose company was located in Wales from 1948 to 1978. Later the trademark Rosedale Rose was used.

Originally Rosedale/ Tudor Rose made novelties such as buttons, combs, plastic jewellery and toys, but by the early 1950s, plastic toys and dolls were their main output. Amongst their toys was a range of hollow hard plastic toys moulded into vehicles, they later went on to make softer, polythene-type playthings, e.g. Noah's Ark. In 1959 Kleeware dolls company sold out to Rosedale plastics.

Space toys by Tudor Rose are particularly sought after by collectors as they are quite rare, along with trains, cars, money-boxes, and walking novelty animals.

They used brightly coloured plastics for their toys as companies in the 1950s were so pleased that plastics could be easily dyed that they took full advantage, and had a variety of colours.

In 1971 the company was taken over and then in 1978 they were bought by Mettoy, who then went on to sell it 5 years later. By this time they had stopped producing toys.

https://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1159674/orange-crane-lorry-tudor-rose-rosedale/

I think a few other toys by this manufacturer have previously turned up on the tat stall; they're marvellously gaudy and, primary colours aside, some of them look like decent enough models.

Tudor_Rose_various_plastic_toys.thumb.png.b9078abb52379467e066ffb2496be4f4.png

I can't find anything exactly the same as the one I've now got; but a similar toy (minus the exposed engine) seems to have gone through an auction a few years back. But whether it raised more than a pound or two is anyone's guess.

Tudor_Rose_Grand_Prix_Racer_Plastic_1950s.thumb.png.97814e97863d245949fb959f66c6ddfb.png

Not really my thing, so if anyone wishes to add it to their own collection at £1, I'll be happy to set it to one side for you.

And it's BIG (see Hot Wheels for comparison).

20200731_161005.thumb.jpg.e0715a5d1d6e4dfed274d3fc7862bf7e.jpg

So there we go... that seems to be this week's tat round-up; although there's a few pieces that I'm keeping for myself, let me know if there's anything with a price next to it that you desire - and I'll allocate as directed.

Cheers!

Oh M'sieu l'Ambassadeur, you are tempting me!  Cease and desist immediately sir!  (Before I'm forced to stump up money I don't have for something I really want, that'll only get me in trouble with the wife!)

I'll do you a PCP deal.

Pound a week for 30 weeks with a ballon payment of a tenner should you wish to keep it. You can hand it back at the end of the lease but you'll be charged for any marks or scratches.

And it must be dusted and polished at an authourised cleaner once a month. I'll provide a service book at no extra charge. This must be stamped at every dusting.

Not yet. It was getting late when I started searching and I'd already had enough after a few hours of gardening. Will have a poke at it next time I dig out the boxes again!

Yeah, I'm kinda horrified and intrigued as to what that's about - never seen anything quite like it! I'll have to check my boxed Corgi...

Let us know how you get on, sure - might respond to a dry toothbrush gently rubbed on the strange bits..?

Cracking model, though. Look forward to more toybox show and tell the next time you're in the attic!

Looks every bit as oddball as I expected! I wonder if the silver 911 is the same manufacturer?

Excellent find. I've just been reading up on them to try and date it, but can't find anything specific. I'm going to hazard a guess at 1950s? Great to know what they actually are after all this time.

20200801_101207.jpg

I have a silver Range Rover variant of this up in the loft, with an orange clicker.

I got it presumably for my birthday at 'The Jolly Giant' toy superstore which must have been somewhere around Glasgow in about 1984. I remember that my parents had to take it straight back for some reason and have it replaced, presumably it was not working . I don't recall being upset about it.and I can't have played with it much as it's still in good condition.

Kw Dart and the trailer please!

Sure thing - do you fancy the Dart that's sound but scruffy, or the one that's got better paint but a busted casting? I want to keep one for the collection, though I'm not bothered which.

Is it the red and yellow agricultural trailer you're after? If so, no worries - though I'm keeping the blue and silver Corgi Major articulated trailer in case a Mack R Series, Scammell Handyman or Ford H-Series tractor unit turns up one of these days...

Decisions... I’ll go for the one with the better cosmetics and I’ll find a way of mending it. Instead of the trailer I’ll have the Hatra shovel, I’ve got one already but sans tyres.

How about some Sunday morning LONE STAR? This set I bought in the late 90’s to replace one that was enjoyed (and destroyed!) in the 80’s both were RNLI purchases too! I’m keeping this one ?

The Range Rover is pretty accurate - far better than the ‘chubby’ matchbox attempt, it seems to have the length right and the track wide enough.

The casting is quite detailed - separate indicators and sidelights, C pillar vents and RANGE ROVER badging all crisp. Yet oddly enough no door handles!

That green RR is ace @bunglebus How about some less sophisticated LONE STAR now?

All tough as old boots and very secondhand when I got them in the 80’s shamefully they have been living in a tat box ? since then! The lead paint seems to have kept its lustre though, and no zinc pest. Trouble is no detail either - these really are ‘toys’.

The Routemaster is interesting for two things: You still see them MIB for buttons and it’s a two piece casting - but two halves! It does give you a full rake of die cast seats though.

Despite appearances the trailer doesn’t seem to fit the tractor unit, despite the perfect colour match.
