SATURDAY NAME THE BRAND PLEASE REQUEST

One on the left (the worn one) came from @Datsuncog a while back and sports a metal base.  Stamped 'Ambulance Van P346'

One on the right (tidier) came from @TheDoctor this week and sports a plastic base.  Stamped 'D123 Made in China'

Do the wheel styles given any pointers?  Thanks

Don't suppose you (or anybody else) would be able to point me in the right direction of the right size / shape of replacement tyre for this?

Mine has a tyre missing but is otherwise near mint. I've seen loads and loads of sets of Dinky tyres on eBay, but would hate to end up buying something slightly and annoyingly wrong.

I wondered that too as listings tend to speak in mm - but not sure if they mean external or internal diameter.  And of course the vintage models would have been imperial measurement  Some hubs have a deep recess, some rely on recess on the tyre itself

So, the PULLMAN WITH CONFUSED DECALS was asked to pop over for inspection

The trusty ruler joined us

Then Chevy Charlie arrived to lift up the gargantuan Mercedes-Benz, so the tyre could be removed for scrutiny

image.thumb.png.51c80b33a62dca526ec2befcf6f4b65a.png

And here we have it

image.thumb.png.d4c839fc133661a2e8aeced71af8400b.png

Hub has the recess.   Must be stamped Dunlop and has an outer ribbed pattern.  Approx 16.5mm diameter externally, 12mm internally

edit: 4mm thick

Metal based one could be Zylmex?

So 12mm tyres is what we're looking for? I've got a Corgi Jaguar E-type that needs 2 new tyres, the tyre is about the same size as the Mercs' one (I have the same Mercedes model). I bought some tyres on eBay but they were too large for the wheel arch.

Ah yes, sorry, I should have measured the thickness too

My wife says thickness is all important

I think you are confused. I think she said girth. Thickness is kinder ----dumb.

What are the strut tops like?

I'm pleased to report that it sits square at all four corners so they can't have gone through yet.

It is a genuine GM dealer item anyway, so I'm sure my Network Q warranty will see me alright if there are any issues!

Both Zylmex I believe - letter followed by numbers is their style, as are the wheels

A donor is a donor, so no worries :-)  - this is a 'standard chassis' resurrection idea, in different wacky colour.  By 'wacky' I mean off the shelf rattle can, not something eye-searing awful that will send us to further despair and pain.

In recent weeks, a best-I-could-manage-at-current-prices, Corgi Eldorado Rocket arrived in a job lot Rockets haul (had sleepless nights, yearning, yearning, *twitch*)

I mentioned in an earlier post my recycled pallet "vice" and here it is:

1055945569_Rims045.thumb.jpg.ada5d2e01b8f37552461318c20d9667d.jpg

Dinky Range Rover for scale.

And here are the next few for stripping...

Including a Dinky DB6 that I dismantled a long time ago, and miraculously kept together, so it's getting stripped.

356193625_Rims041.thumb.jpg.9c59e5f673bad37e6c8a0a8d2d8713e1.jpg

And here are some of them in their baths.

Interesting little note: when you dismantle the Packard convertible (also a couple of others) the rear wheels will fall off the axle.  Why?  Because Dinky didn't bother peening-over the axle ends, knowing the body would come down the wheel and tyre beyond the centreline of the axle, and therefore hold the assembly together.  Just in case anyone else is doing the same model.

Ooh! Nice packaging.

I couldn't resist this when it came on eBay at a tempting price. I blame all the Royale love on here lately!

Funnily enough I’ve just ordered a Monza from the same series from our own @Mr Lobster’s eBay shop.

Sadly they didn’t do the Monza in gold - or if they did they’re super rare. I went for green.

Mrs SL needed to use the computer all day and didn't want any distractions, which gave me the perfect excuse to spend all day in the shed working on the Sunny Truck:

The paint had gone on pretty well and I was in two minds about whether to polish it, but I did and it was worthwhile. A new sheet of Bare Metal Foil will deal with the brightwork, it also makes for good masking tape.

Had a bit of a 'mare getting to this stage, the chassis just didn't want to click into place so I had to carry out a strategic bit of shaving.

Couldn't resist a mock-up, it'll spur me onto the final stages tomorrow. If I get it finished by the end of the day that means it will have been started and completed in the same month, haven't done that for ages.

The Fire Chief Car was another of those fantasy vehicles that made me irrationally furious as a child. I just couldn't work out what it was meant to be. The ventilation louvres in the bonnet and in the boot were maddening. Front engine? Rear engine? Both? Neither?? What are you trying to do to me, Matchbox? My rage ought to have cooled by now - but apparently not.

Remembered this post.... as it made me smile, remembering also being annoyed by the model when a boy, for similar reasons.  Didn't have one, never wanted one; it just didn't fit into those Observer's Books, which were my reference on life!

The Matchbox Fire Chief car.

Roll forward a few decades and having now reached an age thought (back then) to be really old, for some unexplainable reason am now interested; so recently got hold of the Superfast original and the Super GT re-release in some job-lots.

20200531_100743125_iOS.jpg

'It's just a colour change' - or so I thought - but the bonnet (hood?) grilles and the rear deck grille have been made part of the casting.  So they spent money on it and retooled !   Original is stamped 1976; GT has 1985.  Not only that, the Hungarian 'Playmobil' firm copied it to plastic, with a front grille shroud added too.  So somewhere, out there, there was some love for it.

20200531_100802572_iOS.jpg

Looking inside shows it's a clear two-seater with a cover over whatever is supposed to be in that tall boot (trunk!), yet the bonnet (hood!) is long with air intakes to feed a banked-V engine.  There is a front grille too, with headlamps covered by protection grilles of their own.  My word!

20200531_101712069_iOS.jpg

But I now like it.  Anyone got a spare unwanted original I could buy to modify?  Idea being to create a civilian 'fantasy twin-engined 1970s muscle car' - to allow it a place alongside the countless wacky customs from Hot Wheels etc?  'But why?' you ask.  Perhaps some sentimentality for the past, guilt at not accepting it at the time, and why not for the hell of it.  Underdogs need their own champions!

Were there any larger clones of this model?  Upscaled and friction motored, as Hong Kong's finest could be?

Edit - I think mine is a Super GT, but offer still stands
