Maybe this helps to clarify the 'Rover colours and models.

Plus there was a Longleat version. That I did not know about.

https://sites.google.com/view/corgitoys/home/tv-film/longleat?authuser=0

Very interesting, but still doesn’t explain why they put the wrong roof on the S2. Was it a casting issue? Was the proper curved smooth cab too difficult to make?

The Corgi Juniors Land Rover went halfway there with more of a curve to the hard top but still had 3 ribs for some inexplicable reason.

Someone at Corgi realised in time for the breakdown version and it had the correct roof and curved window shape in the corner of the cab.

As I said Dinky managed it and of course Britain’s , who were probably the most prolific Land Rover modellers at the time

Surprised to see an Auto Union as one of only 5 cars on offer.  Would many French parents be buying that symbol of German dominance only 5 or 6 years after liberation ?

It's a carry-over casting from the 1939 pamphlet/catalogue where Tazio Nuvolari is mentioned, although he never drove the streamlined body type the model depicted (AFAIK)

250px-Streamlined_Auto_Union.jpg

Interesting to note the specific mention of Donnington Hall and Nuvolari, but not the Mercedes team championship winning drivers (all Germans) by name.  Maybe there was something in the air...  1938 Championship final standings:

image.png.f8dc5839e8290d36108ffd167f2e2dcd.png

The 1938 Donnington GP was, as stated, won by Nuvolari.  So somebody at Dinky FR headquarters favoured the Italian!  Perhaps the reissue was to capitalise on Nuvolari's post-war resurgence with Maserati?  It was also well known that he was in poor health (one race he steered with one hand while holding a blood-stained handkerchief over his mouth) and he was dead within a year of the 1951 catalogue.

The 1939 pamphlet/catalogue was issued March 1939, 16 months before France surrendered and Gen. Philippe Petain declared that Germany and France had a common goal, “the defeat of England.” The Git.

That reminds me of that picture of Richard Seaman giving an embarrassed , half hearted Nazi salute after winning the 1938 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring . I think he was killed a matter of weeks before we declared war on Germany. It’s strange to think racing was still going on that close to war. Seaman was killed in Belgium I think, could even have been France.

Yes, at Spa, 25 June 1939 in heavy rain and died that night from his burns.  The Führer sent a very large wreath to his funeral.  Göring & Von Ribbentrop were considered friends.

At the German GP he did give the Nazi salute. Not once, but twice.   German fluent, he married the daughter of the Head of BMW in '38,   He lived in Bavaria and had done so since '37.   In a letter to his mother he called Hitler "electrifying".

Dick Seaman’s story is a very interesting one.  It’s entirely possible he was just naive rather than a particularly enthusiastic Nazi.  I dare say Hitler was ‘electrifying’ to meet, since he must have been an extraordinarily charismatic leader. Which obviously isn’t AT ALL to say that’s a good thing: cults of personality almost never are.

That said, there is interesting evidence that Seaman was involved in gun running to the fascists in the Spanish Civil War.  There was a lot of pre-war sympathy for the fascist movement amongst the British (and European) aristocracy, probably as a bulwark against communism, which at that time was seen as worse given events in Russia.

Seaman’s mother was no great fan of his marrying Erica Popp, incidentally. If I recall she cut him off financially.

Whoa, thread drift.

A bit closer to on-topic, I find it hard to imagine (but CBA to check) that Auto Union would have run streamliners at the twisty little Donington circuit, as alleged by Dinky — they were more for the banked ovals at Monza and the Avusring, and speed records on straight sections of Autobahn.

Donington was all about slotting it under a tiny stone hump-backed bridge without crashing, not V-max.

Funny you should bring up Avusring, that got me fondling a recent homage to the ‘Silver Arrows’ in the form of the 1/32 NewRay Audi Avus concept.  Bought in kit form (die cast, prepainted) as I wanted to motorise it one day

I wonder if there's a toy version of this that doesn't require a mortgage to finance?

Turning to racing of a different nature, the 1978 Hot Wheels Army funny car took a funny turn - I painted it white, but I'd used red primer as it seems to sand better, and the casting was not great.

Even after several coats, it was noticeably pink - so I thought to hell with it, I'll make it completely fabulous

So yeah, three-tone pink and sparkles. I should really paint the 'chute black at some point too

Remind me what you use for masking?  That's a really tight edge you've acheived

1mm masking tape off eBay. Drives me bonkers getting it nice and straight but it does leave a clean edge. I did give it a careful flatting with 1200 grit before the clearcoat just to improve things further

What an idiot! Posts without uploading pics...  Tonight's Morrisons finds,

IMG_20200520_213136.thumb.jpg.bab792b47fbab00970050db5c8487bff.jpg

I like this Monte Carlo casting. I haven't seen this release in any of the previews so was a nice find.

IMG_20200520_213254.thumb.jpg.a6bd3467203aa11ece05c7037cad3f3e.jpg

The Jaaaag is now in a fetching sparkly version of BRG, which suits it nicely.

The newer Civic Type R in a nice Touring-car style livery. Beats all those 793-odd Bisimoto-liveried  versions of the previous shape one...

And on the subject of Honda, the big find of tonight,

IMG_20200520_213351.thumb.jpg.f7892d014fd13538b58b7ec73f41db60.jpg

Prelude!!!

A little honey this one, love the pimptastic red interior, and great Tampos front and rear,

Corgi Rockets release pamphlet, October 1969

Mmm, loving that catalogue... in retrospect, the whole Rockets premise was a bit gimmicky, but you can be sure I would have been saving my pennies for them... they look tremendously exciting, and that blurb was exactly the kind of stuff I would have lapped up. Wheels that pop off and a small oil dispenser? Take my money!!!

The only one of the 'Sweet Seven' I had was the Jensen, in red Solarbrite as per the catalogue - and I think that's been rehomed on here?

20200331_103621.thumb.jpg.df9f72196e3163f8372180e13dbeaf1a.jpg

I did find a Saint-stickered Volvo P1800 in the market tat box a few months back, but although the wheels and chassis were still present, the roof and glazing were missing... shoulda gone for it, even so!

So just how much would these cars have cost, comparing today's prices with 3s 11d back in the day?

20200520_234827.jpg.0a912071ac226ff373b9f5967e18dc48.jpg

Yikes, pricey enough... I'd certainly be sucking my teeth today at £3.49 for a toy car, even if it did come with that all-important tune-up key...

The basic 'Action Speedset' at 14s 11d works out as £13.06 in modern money, while the 'Autobatic Speedset' and 'Racing Speedset' - a cool 30s each - equate to £26.26 today.

Seems that even stuff like this could still be worth picking up, as spares if nothing else.

Daaah...  hindsight, hey?

I also turned these down last year, on one of the old giffer stalls - at a fiver each I thought they were a little salty, but maybe I was wrong there too...

Are Corgi Rockets the new Bitcoin? Discuss.

^^^ I must have watched that film about thirty times on VHS before I was 12 or so, and I still have no idea what it was about.

Still, any hot R4 action's fine by me.

Just don't model the crashed plane with the skeletal pilot that they find in the jungle, cos that gave me nightmares... ???
