.... even spookier

I took these to show the variations of Matchbox Pontiac Firebird

'74, ’79 and ‘79 with T-bar roof

Had the first two since a boy. Had the last one for a matter of days...

Note that an anorak may correct me as the blue car is stamped 1975 on base.  Aha!  But it's modelled a '74 MY as the turn-signals were moved into the grille corners for '75 MY.

Now.  Going back to when I was a young boy there was a TV show on in early evening called The Rockford Files.   The intro with theme music had a car at night in it being followed that has always stayed with me as it stuck out as something I'd not seen before, living in the UK.  It was the W I D E rear light units!  Intruigued, was I.  Miles more space age than my Dad's Vauxhall Viva HA or the neighbour's Volvo 244..

And since that date, whenever I see a '74/'75 Matchox Firebird, I think of Jim Rockford.  I think if the memory has lasted this long then I'll die with it.  Sorry.

Today's photo - more 50p tub pickings:

Random spot check scene, to make sure that the Morgan is taking an essential journey. Fortunately, they'd been to the supermarket but then realised that taking a Morgan was not a good idea, as they couldn't capitalise on the mass stockpiling of toilet roll.

Anyway, neither of these float my boat much but they're both in very good nick, so I bought them to pass on to others, when trading can become a thing again - I'm not sure what international postage is like and it looks like my trip back to the UK in May/June is a smidge unlikely....

Toad will be waiting on paradise road with milner & falfa.

Think that's supposed to be a 71-73 charger.

The Firebird s always annoyed me as they all use the 74 rear end (75 on has a larger rear window that curves down at each side to roughly same height as door window).

The original blue casting is of a 74 formula, as it's a one year only combination of steel bumpers, polyurethane nose cone & small rear window.

Isn't that bond esprit the modern reproduction of the 70's corgi release?

Decent haul, that is...

Kenner seem to have done some pretty strange stuff - I'm not at all familiar with their diecast output, but I should have allowed myself to be tempted by this fantasy weirdie early last year.

I think they sre called wild 1's from the early 80's - I have a yellow pick up somewhere.

I have the bond lotus esprit - mint but not boxed. The base determines how good it is - they are plastic and turn yellow with age.

I was idly searched ebay this morning for a boxed BP promotion orange Jeep when I happened across this. Someone on here did a post about obscure Corgi movie and tv tie ins, this 'Chopper Squad' Jeep apparently pertains to an Australian tv series about the eponymous squad, who carried out rescues (in their chopper). The series was made in the late 70s by Reg Grundy of Neighbours and underpants fame.

I remember having a model based on the same casting when I was a nipper, it was in their 1/36 range, mine was sort of metallic red with an eagle on the bonnet.

My nan bought me the golden one with the eagle on the bonnet when I was a nipper.

The jeep should come with a jet boat/ trailer. The jeep in the TV series was a little suzuki. I have the remains of the corgi jet ranger somewhere.

French diecast parts company 3mja have released their 2020 catalogue. I have ordered things from them (admittedly to a French postal address) and have the found the quality a little bit variable  - however might be worth a look as they do odds and ends for Majorette, Quiralu, Norev, CIJ etc.

Click on 'telechargement' here: https://www.3mja.fr/documents/4002-liste-de-prix-la-boite-a-jouets-2020.html?search_query=catja2020&results=1

Another day, another battered die cast car.

Corgi whizzwheels VW Hot Rod.

Think I picked up this at a car boot sale in North Norfolk last autumn.

Painted in Neon pink, doesn't show so well in the pic,but it is bright.

Here it is beside it's Husky stable mate.

Guess it's based from this casting.

Looks very smart now

Looked it up.  So Corgi released this as' VW Double Trouble Hot Rod' in 1971, the very same year Hot Wheels released the very similar 'Evil Weevil''.  Identical in concept, who came first?

Do you have an Evil Weevil for Eddy to compare with?

It had never occurred to me that the Hot Rod version was based on that, good spot! I assumed it was a unique casting (Nice job on yours too).

There's this, the Evil Weevil and the Johnny Lightening Bug Bomb all featuring double engines. I have a re-released Bug Bomb but again, originals are strong money.

Today has not been entirely successful. Wanted to improve this Matchbox, especially in the wheel department

Started off OK

49723983476_f9bb2cbd81_4k.jpg20200401_133944 by RS, on Flickr

Then I took a chance painting it with a very old, nearly empty can of yellow. Results were not good, splatter, bubbles, all sorts. New paint acquired for tomorrow.

Base and interior coming along though, The Works provided plastic crystals for the headlights. Strange that it has a fuel tank and battery in the non-opening boot, and an engine you can't see. Detailed them anyway...

Had more success with this, bit of a muck about with a Poundland cheapie. Fade blue-green paint with silver/purple sparkles over the top, wheels I've had for ages and a bit of detail in the chrome with a black wash

Also while on the subject, something uncaddily (sorry) similar with Corgi and Hotweels custom Cadillac Eldorado

Hot Wheels modelled the Cadillac 'Custom Eldorado' for 1968

1968 HOT WHEELS Redline Custom Eldorado Mattel Metallic Gold ...

For 1972 re-released as a conversion into 'Sugar Caddy' as part of 'The Spoilers' range

image.png.2a3668a57f53f468525f8c883462e98a.png

The Husky 'Cadillac Eldorado' was released for 1969.  Re-released under the Corgi Junior rebrand for 1970

HUSKY 64 | Check-a-Mart Toys

For 1971, there was the 'custom' variation as 'Caddy Hot Rodder'

Anyone one have these?

So Topper's 1969 Johnny Lightning series Bug Bomb came before both Hot Wheels and Corgi Juniors...

Topper's went bust in 1971. I wonder if they hadn't, Mattel and Mettoy could have got a lawsuit?  Probably not.
