Shite in Miniature II

I loved the MB MK2 Astra when it came out, as much as I liked the real thing. Our main toy shop in the town was a big Matchbox dealer but the first place I saw the Astra was in the window of a small newsagent that I was riding past on my bike, aged 11. Even then, my taste in diecast was more towards the more mundane, everyday stuff. I also loved the fact it was RHD and with a UK registration number.

I had to have it.

So , after saving that weeks pocket money, I went down and got it. Inside the shop, I then saw they also had the bright green Camaro Iroc-Z, and the Golf MK2 GTi.

So that was my pocket money getting saved up for the next couple of weeks...

1985 & 1986 were good years for Matchbox. That Astra was the more common version with the 8 hole wheels and it got those wheels played off it. I reluctantly had to bin it when the base plate snapped around the front rivet. But I finally got a replacement in very nice condition a couple of years ago, (with those older type superfast wheels), in a small joblot I bought from this very thread. Still one of my all time favourite smol MB castings.

SNAP !

Gah! Saw this and popped it in a bundle thinking it was perfect for you, and here we are now with forum over-supply! ?

Limited Connectables research told me (Charlie Mack was no help) that the Kellogg’s tie was for cereal Rice Krispies; three models to collect tokens and send off for:

SNAP was the beetle

CRACKLE was ?

POP was the road roller

What Charlie Mack did say in his Matchbox Tyco Years book was the range was UK-only, although were released later in Germany in orange rather than grey [silver]

Matchbox 1986 for your perusal. Don't seem very clear although I haven't changed the scanner settings

Crikey, I had more '85/'86 Matchboxes than I thought. Off the top of my head, I had the,

Golf GTi (only ever found the one with the big GTi logo down the side, never the earlier one with the small decals)

Astra GTE

Audi Quattro (maroon)

Toyota MR2

BMW Baur cabrio (only ever seen the red one, never seen it in blue)

Camaro IROC Z

Transit MK3

Toyota Supra (not having a rear screen annoyed me somewhat!)

Nissan 300ZX

Sierra XR4X4 (even though the side graphics were incorrect, I preferred the earlier white edition in Ford branded packaging)

Merc 500 SEC AMG

Transit Supervan

Dodge Caravan

1986 certainly was a good year!

Well, the trees and decs went back in the loft today. Unusually I didn't get anything diecast related for Christmas this year, so I had my usual nose around my stash and came across another for the occasional 'blimey, I didn't remember buying that' series.

IMG_20191228_161451.thumb.jpg.94142ff4a75ba75da77ab8f4a381cdeb.jpg

See what it is yet?

IMG_20191228_161502.thumb.jpg.9a72c6d8cee5c03eb7ceefd624cfa0ee.jpg

Yup. (F'ing COUPÉ though???)

IMG_20191228_161637.thumb.jpg.45161eee897efa721aeeaddb5b8e36b3.jpg

Not something you see often, I quite like the Detail Cars stuff, especially the MK1 Capri that I also have, they're nicely rendered things and though they date from well over a decade ago, they stand well with more recent offerings. I've been hunting for their MK1 Fiesta 1300 S in signal yellow for ages but they go for silly money now.

IMG_20191228_161909.thumb.jpg.59dfd3f9a0f488732c17e039dfd4be3d.jpg

For my money, they capture the Corty mk1's shape very well, far far better than the Vanguard MK1 (carried over from  the Corgi Classic days) with its massive wheelarches.

I don't really have a lot of chod from the early 60s (late 60s/early 70s  onwards seems to be more my thing), I think the colour scheme made me choose this. Nice representation of Ford (I think) Goodwood green and the tan interior sets it off. Seat patterns and door cards are nicely done and the correctly cranked over gear knob is there. The three spoke sports steering wheel with drilled spokes looks a tad out of place though.

IMG_20191228_162124.thumb.jpg.b880ab351fd3e183fcb02a44ba1db7a5.jpg

Only real exterior complaint is the rear end looks a bit sparse without badging. I also wasn't really keen on the whitewall tyres.   So after turning the tyres around on the rims,

Miles better IMO. I like the top of the range Super style slotted wheel embellishers on this.

Up for grabs if anyone fancies it, but if not, it may get some display time...

I'm not one for quoting an entire photo-heavy post, BUT!  The box and plinth declare this to be a 1963 model, but the grille and Aeroflow vents in the rear quarter pillars shout 65-66 facelift.  Would be interesting to see the dash because that was also facelifted at the same time.  Also, yes the "Super" embellishers are nice, but it isn't a Super: there's no chrome edging to the side flash and bootlid which the Super definitely had.  And (sorry about all this, I'll take my anorak off in a minute) it wouldn't have had a tan interior, it would have had pale green.  The mirrors would more likely be well forward along the wings than located on the doors.

JEV 463C was a Goodwood Green two-door Super, bought by my dad from racehorse trainer Ginger McCain in 1974, and became the first car I ever drove (poorly, on Southport beach).

It really should be on display though, looks like a very nice model!

I usually give all E30 castings to my mate, don't recall a blue one though. Just having a look on Wiki - blue is 1985, 1986 is red without towhook, 86-91 is red with towhook (explains why so many are red), white are 86-91 with various wheels/decals - but mine isn't shown!

There's a dark blue BP promotional in 88 and a two tone blue in a 90-91 twin pack. Good luck...

I've got a blue one with the earlier style wheels; when I was wee I'm sure mine was red.

A few things have been happening while I've had a bit more time on my hands this last week......

Display cabinets temporarily partially refilled, awaiting arrival of additional shelves and fitting them.

IMG_0424.thumb.JPG.3c710c9546781e13146e9efb7a40adbc.JPG

Got these from a local charity shop just before Christmas. Somewhere I do have the glider trailer, cover and some of the glider itself (probably buried in one of son's old playboxes). Jeep from original set should still be around too, but not as intact as this new one. Mine was bought for 10p circa 1980 when a friend and his family moved out to South Africa.

image.thumb.jpeg.52b3be3826e9829d824c13f5af5db0b5.jpeg

Santa bought me this (well, I got it off eBay and it was wrapped-up for me). I really like the 4dr R32 and I'm looking forward to building this kit, but I must finish up some others first.

image.thumb.jpeg.59a2e9f93013e2d4ff20e596fc9f0ef6.jpeg

Not a kit or a diecast, but this thread seemed an appropriate home. My daughter (who is 16) liked doing a jigsaw she got in a cracker and wanted to do a proper one. The only puzzle I could remember us having was this one I had as a kid. One piece was missing.....

Same daughter was feeling industrious today and wanted to get on with building a model for her A-level DT project. It's a demountable stage and she wanted a lorry to give it some context, so she found this Siku Volvo out in the shed. Cost me 50p from a boot sale a few years ago, good that it has a use.

After a gap of three years I got on with some WIP kits again. This Heller Princess was meant to be a quick, simple build back then. Not sure I'll do anything at this scale (1:43) again, my eyes aren't up to it now. Chrome is the next big job, likely to be bare metal foil, which will be fiddly and time-consuming.

This Honda has been going on for a while. A couple of major hurdles were cleared today, with me finally working out how to fix the accessory wheels (removed kit suspension, drilled holes and used random bit of wire I found), and also painting the internal window surrounds. Now just the outside ones to go, paint and fix lights etc.
