Shite in Miniature II

Jealous of that W123, I've managed to grab an Audi S6 and Lotus Europa in my local Tesco, but still no sign of the Merc. Might have to bite the bullet and get the 9 pack with it in, at least that has the MK2 Golf Country in a different colour scheme and the Caddy hearse.

Been having another 'get models down from the attic, have a look at them, then put them back' session. Expect some pics of underwhelming diecasts, with a particularly distressing Vauxhall flavour later!

With all this talk of buddy cop shows I thought I should post some piccies of my Corgi Classics Professionals Ford Capri.

Long before the will they, won't they? romantic stylings of Dempsey and Makepeace, there was another unrequited love story playing across our screens, the story of two agents belonging to Ci5, a fictional organisation, answering only to the Home Secretary, and tasked with dealing with crimes that fall out the remits of the police, the Security Service or the military. Those two agents were of course Bodie, a bloke who'd fitted in about 25 years worth of elite soldiering experience before his thirtieth birthday, and who was prone to going off mission in order to settle personal vendettas relating to his violent past, and Doyle, the Kevin Keeganesque ex copper with artistic pretensions and a tendency to rant about social injustice. Keeping these two in check and stealing the show whenever he made an appearance was whiskey sossled, grizzled old soldier Cowley.

I like all the old tv show clichés, like finishing every episode on a crap joke, or the 'boys will be boys' type japes such as using a high powered sniper rifle scope to perv on a woman getting undressed in a flat three quarters of a mile away. I like the insight into real life procedure, like staking out someone's house by sticking two blokes in leather jackets in a car parked directly outside 24/7, or on one occasion an huge grey luton van festooned with receiver aerials. There was often a chance to spot someone before they were famous too, most notably Roger Lloyd Pack (Trigger from Only Fools and Horses} cast as a middle eastern assassin complete with generic evil middle eastern accent.

The original Corgi Professionals set came with the iconic silver Ford Capri (Bodie's wheels during the later series) and figures of Bodie, Doyle and Cowley. It was in the 1/36 scale and came out around 1980, when the show was prime time viewing (instead of lurking around on daytime telly on coffin dodger's favourite, ITV4).

Mine is the Corgi Classics rerelease which has basically the same car as the 70s version, with minor detail differences, and two completely different metal figures of Bodie and Doyle (no 'Cow' sadly). I acquired it in about 2000. It's quite a nice set with attractive packaging and decent finish on both the cars and the figures. I think the rear suspension has collapsed slightly causing the rear wheels to rub on the arches but given the way the actual car was treated in the series this may have been deliberate.

Excellent write up... of course buddy buddy TV has a long history with The Persuaders, Randal & Hopkirk and Man from Uncle coming to mind.

I still find it hard to take in that Bodie is now in that great backlot in the sky with (Morris) Cowley. He seemed to have a modern way with him that hasn't dated at all.

The Professionals was great TV. We have them all on DVD (yep we are that sad). It's so cheesy & naff it's great but its still very watchable even all these years later.

The cars & the way they chuck them about is still great to watch, Collins & Shaw did a lot of their own driving (not something you'd get today).

Collins auditioned for Bond, unfortunately he was way ahead of his time in having a rough tough type character (Bond wasn't like that then) , if it had been a few years later when they went a different route with 007 he may have got the part.

Friday night 9:00pm & watching that Granada/Consul smash through a glass window in the opening credits was part of my childhood !

Was out and about at the world's most shit boot fair and thought I spied an MB copy but upon comparison later....

I managed to snare an eBay win on my most favourite MB Rolls Royce in an un- opened blister.

And whilst packing away I rediscovered an old rebuild I done on a rather scrappy MB Pontiac with a squashed roof I felt sorry for once. I straightened it out, put in Trans Am glass and an Audi TT interior with some recent wheels.

Mrs was clearing out a cupboard and found her kids old toy cars. Most were plastic crap but there were a few gems;

I was having a look at the Superfast/GT versions of the RS2000, they are the same casting, they just changed the base and fitted black glass - you can even see where the quarterlight should be. When I take the GT apart I'll find out how the glass is retained.

Just a quick hello to everyone in mini-shite land. I'm still here and Keeping tabs on this thread but am super busy with work and am away from home 5 days a week for the foreseeable, so scant chance of buying anything, though I've a few older purchases I'll update with, when I get the chance.

Worst of all, I'm working less than a mile away from my favourite model shop in Auckland today and tomorrow but have no time to get to it whilst it's open!

The modern versions are more accurate representations of the car but I don't think they have the character of the originals.

The Superfast casting of the Mini is possibly the weirdest looking thing ever. The roof is too long and wide, giving the passenger compartment a cuboid appearance which is quite comical, but it is just so characterful. It repesents a real 'boy racer' late 60s Mini MK2 in the 70s, with its central exhaust , shaved bumpers and flared arches.

I recall playing with a tatty example at Playgroup in the early 1980s which I was allowed to take home, just for one day though!

The original Casting was 1970 with registration plate AJN 391H and was updated to DHK 161N fornthe Mini Ha Ha. I gave mine to my son and he looked after it.

Anyway, I'm excited as I thought I had sold this in the Great Purge of 2013(TM) but I was having a big clearout this morning and of course got distracted looking for it. I was delighted to find it lurking right at the bottom of my oldest veg box in the loft.

I swapped it with something or another with someone who I have long since forgotten in 1989 and my mum repainted it in Mini Rose livery for me as my pocket money couldn't stretch to the current Corgi one. She did everything by hand (she was an art teacher before I was born). So glad I found it now.

Yep I agree entirely - new ones are technically better but I prefer the 70s ones
