Datsuncog
Ah, good to know... and yup, it's a pricey kind of a shop - which is why I don't often post much from it! Lots of lovely old things in the cabinets, and tons of unusual import stuff, but frequently with hefty (think three-figure) price tags. It's like the internet never happened. Hence my cheap-arse preference for digging in the market crates for my weekly diecast fix.

cms206
Also following on from the recently featured Mira "Peugeot 205" now with Split Pin, I today landed this Mira "Opel Corsa". It is fucking dreadful. I had a Mira R18 estate when I was a bairn which was one of my favourite castings of the time, but these are absolute dogshit. barrett
I think they’re completely new castings. £5.10 is pricey though.Surely the VW is just a re-hash of this? Sudsprint
sierraman
I’d doubt it. The castings for that would have got bailed during the early 80’s when Lesney went bust. Anything that got reused would have been sent to China, Macau, Thailand, Hungary or Bulgaria. Example being the No 73 Weasel was reissued in the 90’s sans the rolamatics gubbins as part of a military twin pack. Datsuncog
mercrocker
Be nice if those were old Lesney castings but I think sadly not....The Grand Prix Pontiac looks decidedly different and in fact the last Superfast ones of those didn't have the opening doors either. Like the 205, it was a stroke of genius to add a decal casually explaining what's meant to be, otherwise I wouldn't have a clue. I know diddly-squat about Spanish diecast (other than a small number of Mira, Guisval and Pilen models that have passed through my grubby mitts), so I wonder if Mira went through a period of financial distress in the 1980s, like so many other toymakers, and had to seriously trim their costs? The only Mira I've had was that Citroen CX I picked up last year, and it was beautifully detailed (and very heavy). Something must have happened to them to result in this kind of dogshit-on-toast model being churned out... Looks like another excellent haul, anyway! vulgalour, egg, RayMK and 4 others

The CX ticks all the boxes for a small diecast, metal base, solid yet finely detailed and with badges cast into the body in the correct font. I also have a few similarly awful Guisvals but they seemed to produce some really lovely stuff like the Seat 131 and Opel Kadett E at exactly tue same time. Sudsprint
Some advice please. I am slowly collecting models of all the cars I have owned. The only Mk1 MX5 1:43 scale is this blue one which I want to change to red. Happy to drill through the baseplate rivets but wondering about paint finish from a red rattle can and masking off or replicating the detailing. Any thoughts please? Datsuncog
Swung past the market again this morning... I wasn't sure what might be there, as some places tend to shut on Good Friday - but the stalls were mostly there, as was blokey. I had the impression he was looking for a quick getaway, as there wasn't much set out on the stall - and very few minishite items; just the dregs of the old Dinky military stuff, and the battered/broken '70s and '80s stuff from the Reserve Selection - as per last week, and the week before. No delightful Atlas reissues of French Dinkys for a fiver; no MIB '80s Matchbox for £2. Meh. There seemed to be a few new arrivals in the 50p boxes; mostly '70s MB Superfasts with crazy-wonky axles and missing doors, but at least there was some fresh stuff. Bits and pieces like this, by way of example. If anyone fancies a Superfast lucky-bag to a set price, just say the word... Also in with the 50p stuff was this Made in Japan tinplate helicopter, in Lufthansa livery: Quite a charming little toy, and I was rather tempted even though I know I'm not into tinplate and I really mustn't start with the hoarding again... One of the other house clearance tat stalls also had a few diecast this morning: Yes, this just smacks rather sadly of last week's discussion - 1980s Bburago 1/18 supercars, random unopened magazine partworks and a load of Days Gone and Oxford Promotionals, all sprinkled with plenty of dust - along with the assorted Royal Weddings 'collectables', this looks very like the contents of the classic old giffer sideboard. "They'll be worth money someday!" Seems that the house clearance fella is an optimist too. I couldn't not have a bit of a hoke through the 50p boxes for myself, though... The Corgi Juniors Zetor tractor and the MB Mustang Rolamatics 'Piston Popper' I used to own in much worse condition, so these are for the nostalgia box. Not perfect, but not bad. I also picked these up, as I felt bad leaving them: The MB 3 Binz ambulance is complete bar the Merc star on the grille, the tatty decals and the annoying crack across the screen. It's grubby, but might scrub up ok with a bit of toothbrush and soapy water. The Lone Star Tuf-Tots cement mixer (based, like all 16 trucks in their range, on the same US Ford cab) is a bit of an oddity - later, these would be reissued with red wheels under the 'Mokes' brand, and have periodically appeared on and off over the decades (I had two nearly-new ones I picked up from a charity shop, which I think now live with Mr. Mercrocker). If anyone wants me to add the Binz or the cement mixer to their box, just holler... egg, Sudsprint, Amishtat and 1 other

Heh, it's the kind of thing I certainly did too - a quest for 'realism' in my toys that always seemed to end in baffled disappointment (q.v. my misadventures with the silver Tamiya paint pen and Matchbox Grafix Trafix markers...) I love the proper pressed Dymo stuff; I had a basic one until recently but the unused spools had lost their adhesion - and I couldn't seem to find any more no matter how hard I looked...
