Shite in Miniature II

Bizarrely, the frunk and engine lid are both removable but not hinged in any way, so I might have to see if I can sort that out.

I solved the problem thusly.

For the front lid you drill two ca. 1.5mm diameter holes horizontally into the bulkhead, the clearance between the holes and the upper surface of the scuttle being about the thickness of the lid. The lateral location of the holes is corresponding to the external hinges of the lid. You then cut two ca. 2cm long lengths off one of those square in profile rubber bands and superglue them into the holes, so that half of them protrudes horizontally forward from the holes. You then superglue the lid to those protruding rubber bands. Works a treat. The rear lid is analog, but IIRC no hole drillage is required.

That's more compact a solution than I was thinking of doing, that involved building an actual hinge.  Definitely overthinking on that one.  I've also decided to go for a scruffy grey and cream colour scheme and I'm going to have a go at patina and dirt and such so it's much in the vain of the blue one posted earlier.

Eddie Collection stuff arrived today.  An interesting assortment, as is usually the case.  This burger van will stay as is, no need to change anything on it.

Couple of Ford GTs, one in Gulf livery of a different variety to the one I did myself.  One of the GTs has a red interior, one a white interior, and both on yellow hubs where the one I already have is an early Superfast.

The remains of of a Rolls Royce that we'll come to later.  I've got quite a few of these now.

Another all time favourite is the Soopa Coopa and this one is in pretty good shape, all things considered.  Probably won't restore it unless I get a better one.

A couple more Husky models, I've now got three of these and each one is broken in a different way.  The presumably later one with the solid plastic wheels has surprisingly good paint and chrome, it's a shame the little scoop thing on the back is missing and, as usual, the drum is broken.  The later one has the little metal scoop and very little else to recommend it other than being a presumably earlier model due to having chromed hubs with separate tyres, the only Husky in my small selection to have these wheels.

Couple of mystery items too.  I'm guessing the boat trailer is either Dinky or Corgi.  The Beetle is similar to the Lesney/Matchbox casting but not identical and it has a hole in the roof for a light.  I'm wondering if this is actually a Hot Wheels or late Matchbox offering that was done up like a German police car.

In a deviation from the usual brand loyalty, I explored the Egg Emporium and acquired some nostalgia.  When I was very small, I had both the Renault and the Dodge, in pretty much identical condition except for my Renault's tailgate being rather yellowed and battered from play.

I also picked up this wierd Bomag, it has two seats and two steering wheels and is just generally strange to me.

post-5335-0-20681400-1551887281_thumb.jpg

One problem with picking up lots of randomness is you do end up with a lot of duplicates.  Annoyingly, I always seem to end up with multiples of stuff I'm not that interested in.  The Studebakers I'm happy with, the Field Cars not so much, and I've more Rolls Royces than I rightly know what to do with.  The early Lesney ones, with the exception of the repaint, are all different colours being a gold-silver, a green-gold, and a pink-gold, you only really notice it when you put them together.

Finally, for this little update, that Rolls Royce bodyshell I mentioned.  You'll notice in the duplicates one of the saloons is missing the boot lid and the wheels.  I robbed the wheels off it for something else because the rear axle spring is broken on this one and, as you can see, I already have loads of them.  Then I noticed something strange.  The boot lid on the floppytop and saloon looked the same, the only difference being the number plate.  I wonder...

This is what we're starting with.

post-5335-0-51508900-1551887606_thumb.jpg

To remove the boot lid, you have to snip through the pressed down hinge tabs inside the body shell. Fitting the boot lid to another body will vary depending on what you've got to work with, I was lucky and it appears someone had just sprained the hinge tabs to get the boot lid off, so I could just about force them back down again.

post-5335-0-58371900-1551887778_thumb.jpg

How about that?  The casting is exactly the same.  The manufacturer went to the trouble of casting an identical part with different number plates cast on to the two versions.  Utterly pointless.  Oh, and I dug a pair of early Superfast wheels out of the spares box and glued the rear axle spring back together so this is now very restorable.  For now, I'm leaving it as it is because I like the mismatched panels.

Well, now I know what to look for they used that bodyshell for a lot of variants and not just the police car.  The hole was used for a beacon and for some sort of steering mechanism?  There is a green variant with stickers so I'm wondering if they just stuck the sticker on the roof over the hole and that's what this one originally was since it doesn't seem to match the other options.

I went to my favourite little shop again, despite having wiped them out of interesting 1/43s (although I found a rather high priced one I'd considered before, that'd been moved elsewhere, rather than sold, so I may look to get that one day). This meant that I ended up with lots of small rammle instead. It went thus:

46383198265_20af879072_z.jpg

Tell a lie, they did have some 1/43-ish things and so I Hoovered up this floaty Dinky Standard Atlas for a small sum, then spent a slightly larger small sum buying 4 repro tyres for it. The cab is damaged but apart from that, it's ripe for a resto, which I'd like to try some day. Perhaps I should try and emulate arguably my best spot ever achieved, which was this excellent Leyland 20 I papped 7 years ago, in daily work use with its original owner!

Hmm, quite different looking at the back. And not actually that enjoyable a colour scheme. Maybe gay 60's colours would be better. It's all incredibly hypothetical at the moment, so no need to think it over too much.

46383200585_fe90283242_z.jpg

I also picked up this salacious Playart Volvo 244 Donk edition, mostly on account of its excellent condition and curio value, rather than it being something of particular interest. Does make a change to the Corgi Juniors estate that are far more common in this scale, though.

33422221688_83e29ee3bb_z.jpg

Here's the overtly sloped and badly detailed front end, which ties in with the oversized wheels. I will say though that the interior and exterior colours are nice and the back end is actually quite accurate but I've no photo of that, sorry.

46383200135_44264fd6f2_c.jpg

Despite its poor condition, something about this Dinky Dublo articulated Bedford combo spoke to me. Having perused Google, it seems that the engine on the load bed is not an original feature but it came with when I bought it (can any mini-sleuths identify it?). But even the base of that is bent! Again, I'm sure I'll give this lot some love some time down the line. Just don't hold your breath...

47297907451_162bb2ee4b_z.jpg

Also picked up this R4 van, as thankfully the packaging was awful but had done its job in protecting its contents, so I could open it up guilt free.

32356202347_101d41f37b_z.jpg

Thankfully, the packaging was already handily mashed for my convenience.  Again, wasn't a king's ransom due to the broken box but even the few mint/boxed Majorettes they have of similar vintage are £5, which I think is very fair, should anyone be interested? There's a maroon CX, a couple of yellow Dyane vans (forget the French name of those), a green Tercel and a blue Safranne from memory, along with a few others.

33422220848_2987e022d5_b.jpg

Once successfully exhumed, its first job was to pop along and help out some hapless Francophile who'd had the misfortune to own an obscure French car in NZ. Supporting Trafic amusingly has seats in the back, as Corgi just borrowed the interior from the minibus casting!

Incidentally, the shop has two plastic tubs which live beneath a shelving unit. Within said tubs are the $1 (about 50p) items deemed not worthy of proper display space but a magnet to me, due to my miserly ways. Ordinarily it's full of modern broken dirge and the odd interesting thing but I fished the 11 Turbo and Trafic from there, along with these, too:

33422218488_56ff32a272_z.jpg

I already owned the foreground Rentaset van in better condition but the casting's too nice a one to turn down. I think that's a spokey doke in the load area but I've yet to extract it. Roller door is present, though.

46383199485_9eca9026bc_z.jpg

The main draw was the LOL-some teeny wheels it came on! Surely that's not a usual thing for one of these? It's like the wheel Yin to the Volvo's Yang.

33422219848_a34d268b6b_b.jpg

Here's a slightly better comparison shot. Who knew that Euro look was a thing in the 60's? Should this turn out to be some valuable* variation, perhaps I should swap the bases round, since there's no rivet to attach them and they just clip in place.

47297906861_7b38efb444_z.jpg

In hindsight, this Mercedes 220 was a crap buy. Both doors are there but the entire front end is broken off, so only the base plate holds the two bits together. And an A pillar is missing. And to think I turned down a very presentable Thames Trader compressor for this! In hindsight, I should've snaffled a few more of the MBs available but was on a tight budget, as I had no cash and all our bank accounts are joint accounts...

47297907941_a96b98e522_c.jpg

Thankfully, I was able to nab this merry combo, though. I've happy memories playing with an identical caravan round at my Gran's house 30+ years ago and like this one, the door was missing. Never knew these came with a number plate tampo on the back, which this one has most of one remaining.

32356204277_b4bd083093_z.jpg

And not only was the tow bar intact on the Victor but so was the tail gate! Even in this condition, I'm very happy with that at 50p and it's a lovely casting, so I reckon this was my personal best of the bunch.

Yeah, great haul!   Those TV vans came with both sizes of black wheel as did the Ice Cream vans, I don't think there is any great rarity difference although the early issues with the grey wheels are quite scarce.   That Dublo Dinky wagon was designed to accept the demountable meat van from the Hornby Dublo railway wagon but that engine looks interesting - can't place the origin.....

Love the backdrops too!

I'll take anything Lesney/Matchbox that's left over, no matter how broken.  It's all good for kit-bashing.

Vulg, if there's anything in particular you're looking for, do let me know - I'm planning another market stall excursion in Belfast tomorrow morning.

As an example, there's at least two Toe Joes, two Soopa Coopas, three Planet Scouts and three Stretcha Fetchas in amongst the other tat - plus many other various knackered Lesney/Superfast/Corgi Juniors stuff that may provide decent componentry for custom jobs...

Always happy to hoke on behalf of shiters.

Money no object I'd get you to hoik every bit of Matchbox/Lesney out of those boxes, even the broken stuff, and send it to me.  Unfortunately, I can't indulge that sort of extravagance so I mostly just admire the 50p boxes from afar.  So I try and be a bit careful and just rehome the occasional bit of Shiter content.  I should really have a bit of a clear out of some of the duplicates I don't need, my intention was to only ever have one good original and one personalised version of each as a maximum and now here I am with eleventy billion Rolls Royces.

If I spot something in the boxes I absolutely cannot live without I will definitely shout up.
