I could not resist that Transit camper, and I've boughtificated one from a UK seller, that one is going to go bloody stupid I bet, like that Altaya Onion did, that was a model I sold for a nice 'cup of tea', doesn't happen much, also got more cheapos coming in, but one will be going out as a RAOK to a shiter, and good friend

Ok folks, how do you hold you models in place when painting? I've just done another one, was crouching over cardboard on the floor, and thought there must be better ways than this? Also, as it also led to another imperfection.

As others have alluded to, I found myself in a very similar situation earlier this year.

 

I looked around elsewhere (Catawiki etc) but most specialist/collectable auction sites outside of eBay seem to only want higher-end stuff (Catawiki asked for a minimum value of 80 Euros for each piece listed by new sellers, which was far beyond the stuff I was looking to shift). But I was really put off eBay selling, for the same reasons as yourself. I shifted some through various Facebook groups for model collectors but, inevitably, fell prey to scammers; although the Toy Shite group was (is) much better, attracting a few of the fine folks from here.

 

I'd love for there to be a site for diecast as exists for vinyl collectors - Discogs, which is both a wiki catalogue and marketplace for recorded music, including rare variants etc. But I don't believe any such site yet exists.

 

So yes, I just posted up the models I wanted to sell on here (I used my own cars thread, but I imagine this thread would be just as good if not better) and managed to find buyers for nearly all of them.

 

For the sake of quick sales, I used eBay to find an approximate value, then knocked a bit off as shiters' discount. Initially I used 'including postage' as a draw, but ended up cutting my own throat a few times by pricing the model less than the postage, so I wouldn't recommend that! Since most folk wanted more than one model, it makes more sense for everyone to weigh a box  of delights and obtain a postage cost accordingly. Knocking a bit extra off for multiple purchases seemed to go down well here, too.

 

That's just my tuppen'orth, but If I can assist any further, do ask!

Pop them up on here, Datsuncog did ok with his mega sale earlier in the year. I use ebay when necessary.

 

Thanks for the info guys, all I have to do now is sort them all out now & hopefully get a few listed on here soon! I have literally hundreds of models in my old collection, some I will keep for sentimental reasons, but most can be moved on - I haven't displayed them for years & they have just sat in storage under the bed in the spare room & in the loft so its time to part with them (I dread to think how much money I spent buying them all).......

When I was stripping & repainting diecast models (I used to make code 3 police models) I made a stand out of an old wooden shelf about 3ft long (for the base) then drilled 4 holes and attached dowel rods glued vertically into the base to act as stands for the models being sprayed. I used a blob of blutac on the top of each dowel stand to hold the model in place for spraying.

I use disposable cups and an old cardboard box as a spray booth, last model I sprayed up was over 2 years ago now though, and I used the bathroom with the extractor fan on and window open, I let the models dry on a radiator

I bought the Messerschmitt in a museum called Traumwerk which houses Hans-Peter Porsche's Tin Toy Collection.

Also a gigantic HO model railway which incorporates elements from German,Swiss and Austrian Railways.Herr Porsche is a grandson of the original Professor Porsche.Traumwerk is in Bavaria near Berchtesgaden.

The warships have the slight element of caricature that can make tinplate more attractive than an exact scale model.

 

It's all Marklin stuff he uses for the layout. He has a huge collection as well.

 

Most of the museum is also Marklin stuff including all the toy kitchen stuff and ships.

 

The lighting in the layout area I was told cost over 100k Eurodollars at the time.

 

A great place to visit for car or train people.

I've always used the bent wire coat-hanger technique. In conjunction with gloves, after I spray-painted my hand orange and realised how difficult it was to remove many years ago.

I then find it easy to move the model around and get a good coverage of paint, I start with it upsidedown and work around to the top. A bit of tape helps hold it in place, and then I use the hook to hang it upsidedown so I suppose that helps keep the dust off it when drying.

I looked up info about the warships.They seem to go at auction for around €100k each.There was also an ocean liner that was about 5-6 ft long.

For body spraying, I use a piece of wood and a huge wodge of blu-tac.   Wood dimension depends on model but you want about 12 inches (missus) at least.  Blu-tac the shell to the stick.  You can then turn the model, raise or lower it away from the spray accordingly.   This also means you can take the work into the light, out of the dust, away from things you don't want to be Dinky-coloured etc.

Remember I swapped Christine some models? And that a play worn Mustang was in the swap?  Well, now restored. Some paint errors which I've mainly concealed with the photos here (hence queries above).  The Steve Flowers glass replacement is too thick really, not as delicate as the original. Needs gluing back together at some point.

For painting matchbox size stuff I use similar to the above. Correx plastic with paperclips or toothpicks stabbed in. 

I some times use soldering helping hands. Although the crocodile clips can snap off so I usually just use the croc clips as rests.

I've got a modified one of these with three croc clips instead of the magnifying glass.

I have been watching an Aussie on youtube who restores old Matchbox stuff, what he does is superglue a screw or nail to the inside of the model, and holds the model with a set of long nose pliers, and sprays models that way, seems to work, he also shows a handy way to remove & replace Matchbox axles, in other news I have a Corgi 999 collection mk1 Transit in Warwick fire service livery, sadly mirrors are missing, but found some on ebay, the model cost me, wait for it..........£8 WITH postage, and it is boxed with certificate, mirrors have cost me less than £2, so for under £10 I have basically a Vanguards Ford Transit van

In other news, I have purchased a pair of Norev Pug 203s. One to keep and one to sell. I am of course selling the one in less good condition! It has marks and dents on various parts of the roof which I hope I have pictured. Price is £8 posted (standard 2nd class).

Loving that Matchbox box art Christian, anyway, here's that Aussie bloke I was on about doing up a battered old Commer, which is really based on the old Mr Whippy vans, not a Lyons Maid van as produced by them, the body is a Bonalack of Essex body by the look of it. Yes I'm an ice cream van nerd and have the Nostalgia Road ice cream van trilogy books, and that casting is pure Whippy. Anyroad, here's Marty down under, and he does have a good name if I say so myself, so sit back, grab a brew and some snacks, and go through his playlist. I don't think you will be disappointed. He has some really handy tips.

My el cheapo Ford Transit in Warwickshire Fire Service guise, with it's pig nosed friend, the fire service Transit came from a faceboiok diecast group for a mega barg £8 shipped, yeah the mirrors are AWOL, but I nicked the ones from the green piggy, and put ones from a Michelin VW T2 van

A recent purchase and resto is this Husky toys James Bond Aston Martin,

 

I don't really restore Husky because they are so fragile,but decided to give this one a go.

 

It had the usual broken suspension tabs in the base,as well as nearly total paint loss.

Another tidy up.

One of my favourite matchbox castings.

The MG 1100.

 

This was in good shape,but had suffered horrendous paint loss.

So a quick blow over was in order.

I also did a repaint. Corgi Juniors are great - the castings are often quite nice, and they're so utterly valueless you can just buy more if the painting goes wrong. 

 

 

 

You can't see in the picture but I also painted the interior brown with light brown seats. You can't see it in real life either, so that was a waste of time.

Inspired by myself, I dug out all my 80s Corgis. 

 

 

The unboxed ones are mostly from childhood, the boxed ones were picked up at toy fairs for 50p each. 50p! For mint boxed! They're worthless! and I love it!

 

The quality is erratic. They range from "actually very good" like the Pontiac Firebird (with metal baseplate and neat detailing) to "what is this shit" like the Mercedes 190, where they've even deleted their name from the baseplate, hopefully out of shame:

Lulz at the Tonka Car Carrier in Great Yarmouth model village- I suppose the vehicles consisted of what large scale stuff was available off the shelf at the time. Interesting looking Semi to the left and the Triang Routemaster has somehow escaped being painted blue and cream to represent a local bus.

So I found another Tomica retailer yesterday, apologies for the amount of pictures in advance! Still no sighting of number 51 the Toyota Crown taxi though. Each window box pulls out on a draw and supposedly the models are behind - can be a bit hit and miss however. Scales vary widely too. Despite my (broken) self imposed ban, I may have picked up some FJ cruisers...

You try removing scratches with G3 to limited effect.

 

 

You realise you never wanted it anyway and offer it for cost of postage on here (£3.00).
