Lots of Japanese, French and other European shite

I’ve just returned from a week-long tin hunt in the USA – searching for abandoned American cars for my page in Classic American magazine.

While I was out there I also spotted this collection of old Japanese and European shite. I have to admit that I’m not great at identifying the Japanese stuff, so I’m probably going to need some help.

This Renault 16 was found in Montana.

You don’t see too many Vauxhalls in the US.

Posted Image

Am I right in saying this is a Toyota?

Posted Image

This Civic ‘Woodie’ was just hours away from being crushed in this Idaho yard.

Posted Image

Is this a Mazda?

Posted Image

It’s got a Dodge badge on the back, but it looks remarkably similar to the car above to me.

Posted Image

So what Renault is this then?

Posted Image

This shite brown Accord was within a stone’s throw of a Nevada brothel.

Posted Image

Here’s another one that was about to be crushed. Scrap metal is fetching $300 a tonne, and the crushers are working overtime.

Posted Image

Definitely the first 18 I’ve ever found over there.

Posted Image

12’s and 16s are both incredibly unusual in the US.

Posted Image

These 16s are part of the same collection.

This 505 was pictured in a Washington yard.

Posted Image

Sunbeam Alpine is in perfect condition.

Posted Image

Is this a 120Y. It was parked outside a Washington salvage yard.

Posted Image

Porsche is living on borrowed time.

Posted Image

Land Cruiser is sitting uncomfortably close to the mobile crusher in this yard.

Posted Image

Opel Manta on top, and is that a Renault 10 below?

Posted Image

I’d choose the 300ZX every time.

Posted Image

Fiat was remarkably sound.

Posted Image

Plenty of 70s and 80s Hondas still kicking about.

Posted Image

More japs

Posted Image

What Subaru is this then?

Posted Image

I haven’t seen one of these Subaru pickups for a while.

Posted Image

Is this a Datsun pickup?

Triumph Herald not looking too healthy.

Fiat on top, and is that another Sunbeam below?

That’s a pair of Volvos closest to the camera, but what is the blue car behind? It’s got twin headlights if that helps. And it's definitely not a 504.

Might be a Datsun cedric - but I never realised they were imported out there - the front looks a little like a Laurel of the same age though. Help me out someone.

Great pics by the way.

Wow! Proof that they did actually sell the R16 in the US, then - I'd seen it featured in US car mags from the late 60s (along with the Peugeot 304), but never actually worked out whether they sold them to the public, or the US subsidiaries had a couple there for evaluation.Marvellous pictures.

Some excellent pictures there. I lived in the US in the late 80s and travelled around quite a bit but never saw any 60s/70s Renaults. Identifying the blue car was a bit of a challenge. As a car spotter in my younger days in the 60s and 70s I thought I recognised it as a Datsun but finding pictures on the net to verify this was a challenge. The pics I found are close but not an exact match. It appears to be a late 60s Bluebird although it had different names in different countries. The crease down the upper side is very distinctive, as are the front door quarter lights and windows. Try looking at the P411 model on this excellent site:http://www.earlydatsun.com/blue.htmlThere are some differences such as the grille and indicators. The old Vauxhall Victor is an amazing find. They were sold in the US in the late 50s but under the Pontiac brandname. Vauxhalls were sold in the 60s in Canada. In the 60s most old Vauxhall Victors rusted away very quickly so to have survived this long means someone must have looked after it. Possibly this and the Renaults seen came into the US via Canada.
