I never had either. Booo.

However, my best mate had a shitload of Scalextric, some of it was bang up to date, some ancient (old skinny tyred BRMs and Maseratis that just wheelspun uncontrollably).

My Scalextric weapon of choice was a hybrid I built out of a Sierra RS500 body and a Williams FW17 chassis with Magnatraction. If anything it seemed better than the ordinary F1 cars.

I never got any of those for Crimbo, but did buy a load of Scalextric in the early 90s; some new, some secondhand. I still have nearly all of it and will be setting-up a circuit next week for the first time in years. Can you tell my grandsons are coming???? :D

Christmas 1971 - a Lego set. That'll be coloured bricks where the infant has to (perish the thought) use their own imagination to build a house, fridge freezer or a Hillman Hunter. No beige bricks however.

In '74, an Action Man. I had the blonde one without the beard or Eagle Eyes (they were later anyway). I got various vacuum packed uniforms and bits, saved up the tokens on each and eventually saved enough to get a German sentry box. ACHTUNG!!

In Christmas 1977 - a Raleigh Grifter - they'd just come out. But there was 8ft of fucking snow so I couldn't ride it for about 2 months. Never mind though - Dad dug an old Mini gearbox out of the garage attic......a Hilka socket set and an oily Autobooks manual later it was in bits. Thank fcuk Dad undid that pinion nut though.

The rest I can't remember. By the time I was 14/15 I realised that Xmas was in fact a load of shit. :D

At the age of 11 I found one of those which was missing alot of its bogies and power gear... if I'd asked they'd have let me keep it as it was I didn't and they have probably binned it - I'd have made a mint on it since they go for a packet on ebay last time I checked.

Wasn't boxing day the traditional day of roasted model railways? That wonderful smell of a little hornby engine slogging its way round an oval and slowly burn its motor out. Hornby was always the Chrimbo present for me.... then it was scalextric, although in my day they all had magnets on the keep them on which seems to be cheating compared to guiding a highly unstable maestro round the sitting room floor.

I had a Scalextric, which I still had until last year. The set I got around 1980 was the 400 set which had the 6 wheel March & JPS Lotus, plus a red Mini 1275GT and a black Mk1 Escort Mex in black. I bet back then it cost a fair few quid!

I had Hot Wheels and a Hornby train set.

Mine was the Mallard loco with a load of ancient carriages from a different set. Had to pour a little bottle of something flammable into the engine somewhere to get smoke. I think it's still in the loft. Must dig it out some day. There's a set of Renault 30 blue leather(...) seats up there somewhere too. Need to make a frame for those and use 'em as a couch.

I was given the Scalextrix set entitled 'rallying with lights'.

It had 2 Escort XR3i's and a figure of 8 banked track. I got bored with it quite quickly. Still got it in its box though, and I thwarted Fatha_L's recent attempts to give it away by hiding the cars elsewhere.

My friend at the time had the F1 set with magnatraction and a huge track, stadiums and a lap counter. It used to loop round everywhere!

Last year my wife bought me a hornby train set and a Scottish Class 47 loco :D

  • 6 years later...

I used to have a few sets of scalextric used to run it down the hallway and up the stairs until mum trod on it and went on her arse down the stairs! Banished to the garden on dry days ... through the flowerbeds and mounds of soil on the lawn ... soon banned for that as well ... jesus what's wrong with my parents !!!

As a young Ford fan I had one of these.C052_Ford_Escort_RS1600_White_RHS.jpg

Scalextic with a Red Mini, Yellow Mini, White Escort Mexico and Blue Datsun 260. Sold it all for a reasonable sum which of course is naff all in today's money. Wish I had kept it for my Grandson, he likes his cars and Inlike getting down on my hands and knees and playing cars with him, much more fun than when I was a kid

I got a go-kart. Not with a motor. With pedals. Still good for making brum brum noises on though, my dad stuck the Griffin that fell off his works astra van on it (I also don't understand why he didn't put it back on the van) and our street was straight and flat. So all good!
