sad day! the Red Bastard goes over the bridge

Recommended Posts

Well, today the Red Bastard goes over the bridge, I just moved it and although it hasn't moved for 3 months the XUD started on the first turn of the key...such a waste but unfortunately, the tax is up at the end of the month and I cannot afford to re tax it or insure it anymore especially when it is not being used. At the4 moment I'm not in the physical shape to do the final bit of MOT work and even if I did the scrap value + MOT cost + tax cost + insurance is more than I would get selling it on the market.

Such is the plethora of 306's on the market at the moment that you can't give them away for scrap value so scrap it will become.

Having said that I will seriously consider replacing it with another one in the new year if and when finances start to look a bit better - for uber cheap motoring there is not a lot better at the moment especially in XUD form.

I did put a lot of work into this car but needs must and at least I learnt about brakes....

and of course....

alterators

200 - car

70 - brake bits

270 in total (not including tax and insurance obviously)

I'm getting 200 weigh in with collection which is pretty good

TBH it's not the cost of the bits but the cost of the paperwork that is forcing this. Cos of the age of the car I can't get classic insurance on it and our full fat policies are e4ye wateringly expensve at the moment - £750 to insure the pug

Were this car not such a common site on Gumtree and the free ads pape I would be putting in place plan A and swallowing the cost...

however, the capability of the BX has undermined the argument and take it from me the Scooters finances are so close to the wind at the moment that the £200 weigh in price is desperately needed at the moment.

SORN not an option as I have given up my storage - the Scooters fleet will be down to 2 cars as there is another Legacy turning up tonight which means on Friday the wife's 4 cam gets weighed in:

it has several months ticket left BUT now needs a nearside HG, a new nearside exhaust downpipe and a new gearbox as well as shocks, brakes and rocker gaskets and the cost of those Jap parts, work aside is rather a lot even if I bung in a bottle of K seal - I might K seal it and stick it on ebay to see what happens - it is a 4x4 after all but the gearbox issue means spares and repair and TBH I could do without the ebay hassle

that's it away to Grays of Kirkcaldy

Had a long chat with the owner who came over in a spectacular early OMG SHERPAZ FISHTALE primed him to contact me if he ever finds anything 'interesting' on his travels...

he was telling me he pulled a lonely MK3 Escort out of a giffers garage the other day - typical minter - persuaded the giffer not to scrap it and instead sold it for him taking 50% commission EVERYONESA WINNA

been up for a month - I was holding it for Dunc but the tax pushed the issue - don't think you'll have a problem getting an XUD engine they always come up on ebay for about 100 quid - besides, mine had done 185k

thats not really a for sale add as such when you post this at the bottom

the 306 has only been an issue when out of MOT - if I stick a ticket on it then the unreasonable stalinist attitude towards it will opefully dissaate and I can quietly remove it from sale!

185k you think thats allot crickey its only just ran in  i bought an old 305 estate that had been a taxi with 883k miles on it and it was a flier for being none turbo these engines eat miles for breakfast unlike some modern dervs with over complex electronic crap fitted.

I'm loving this thread, need's must BUT BANGER RACERS ARE SCUM :lol:

I've never said anything about banger racers being scum.

What I object to is one of their brethren coming on here on a vaugely concealed wind up.

Cars get scrapped when they no longer make economic sense to repair, end of and were this a 205 or a BX TZD it probably would have sold but with over 13 306 Tds for sale in East Central Scotland, all with less miles and better bodywork than this one and the cheapest at £250 the sums do not add up. In 2-3 years time, folk will probably remember what good cars these were and the price will therefore rise.

As I have said, it is not the cost of repair per ce but the cost of the paperwork required to run the car specifically tax and insurance that was coming in at a whopping 1100 a year for a car worth £200.

It's pretty grim when useable cars get lobbed over the bridge but the harsh reality is that if a buyer doesn't come forward then that's that. People can't keep cars indefinately and you also have to factor that sometimes the lower the price of the car the bigger the moronity of the potential buyer.

If anything the increase in paperwork from the DVLA - first SORN then if on SORN must be insured - if insurance stops - send in the tax disc - you get DVLA vans spotting your car on private land and fining you - it all becomes a huge hassel.

totally right re lower price - lower numptie - last time I publically advertised a car very cheaply I got loads of idiots calling up or turning up. TBH I'd rather sell on here or RR por a forum than on ebay or gumtree.

All too true. I tried selling the white 480S complete, then with what I thought were the saleable bits removed. I got no interest so I binned it for my £130. The same thing would have happened to the grey ES had Chris not come forward. Sometimes you need money quickly, the space isn't available or you're just fed up with morons leading you on a merry dance.

If a vehicle is on SORN and not kept on the public highway....it does NOT need to be insured, this is an urban myth, check it out on the direct.gov site

While this is certainly the case technically, they have been known to snatch cars away, THEN argue over whether land is public or private - ie parking attached to housing estates etc. If the public can drive onto it (ie car parks) they assume it's public and act. This is thanks to legislation allowing the Police to deal with boy racers who used to try and hide on supermarket/McDonald car parks...
