Tanat Valley: 268 J658 UHN, near Llanfyllin

And finally, everyone likes a Lynx, don’t they? TVC’s owners certainly did, operating a number of Mk.1s and Mk.2s over the years. Why? Because they were cheap and rugged. And they didn’t come any more of a bargain than J658 UHN, bought with J653 UHN for £1500 the pair, and both wearing a brand new set of Michelins all round!

Isn't that pretty much a set of new tyres with a free bus attached?

A facebook memory from the other day.

Eight years ago I was working for Gibson Direct as a driver/manager and my daily drive for the majority of the year or so I spent there was this 1987 Leyland Tiger new to the BAOR but first entered PSV use in the UK with Turners as XHY 256 after conversion to RHD.

It was one of a pair at Gibsons referred to as Bert (G235 BRT) and Ernie (E691 NOU).

When rescuing bus preservation projects, it pays to have the right equipment.

For those who don't know, that's a Leyland Martian 6x6 transporter. Powered by a straight 8, 6.5 litre Rolls Royce petrol. Yes, the fuel bill for that was eye watering.

MPG or GPM?

Left a brand new packed lunch box on one of Keenans buses once and never saw it again. Still gutted about that... 10 years on.

Anyway, turns out they've went into liquidation.

We've taken on their Prestwick Academy runs to Monkton and Symington.

Had a nose at that ADN "article" comments... long memories down Ayrshire way.

So, 50 years ago as of tomorrow, and with the Barnsley scrap men heading home, me and my mate jumped on a bus to Halifax. A bus very much like this one, ready to head back to 'uddersfield in the shape of a Leyland PD3/4 with Metro Cam bodywork belonging to Calderdale, as Halifax was now called after acquiring the local Todmorden UDC operation.

203.thumb.jpg.f981b29bd3dd74dd38a97ee8669dd7d9.jpg

There were other interesting things around as well, like this AEC Regent V again with Met Cam front entrance bodywork.

Halifax were another user of single deck as well as double deck Daimler Fleetline chassiss. Decker 104 has Northern Counties bodywork whilst single deck 112 has Willowbrook bodywork.

This took us by surprise as we headed off towards Todmorden.  Calderdale  362, VKR479, originally Maidstone and District DH487, a 1956 AEC Regent V with Park Royal H33/26RD body and was one of four purchased to cover a vehicle shortage and still in M&D livery

So, Tormorden, and a fine chod laden shot of  Halifax 280, a Weymann bodied Leyland PD2/37, CJX320C,

280.thumb.jpg.978e8342a1fcaa8874e758286face3ff.jpg

but we weren't here for that, we were here to see these (and ride on them), KWX17 & 18, two of a batch of 8 Leyland PD2/12 with Leylands own lowbridge bodywork delivered in 1951 to Todmorden UDC.

It's not that there were many lowbridges in Tormorden, the problem was that the bus depot was built to house single deckers, so when they wanted to increase capacity on routes and needed double deckers, they were, errr, fucked, their only choice was lowbridge versions which just fitted under the entrance.

Where shall we go next ??

Also come across this for sale in Norway that you might like. 1971 Mercedes Benz 0317 chassis with Norwegian built VBK body. It has never been restored inside, it was painted in 2009 otherwise it is untouched and original. It has a little over 1 million kilometers on it and can be yours for 13,500 pounds.

Came across a slightly unusual bus for sale in Norway now. 2000 Volvo FL6 so is this built on truck chassis for the FL6? May be so as the engine is in front.

Looks right for a body on truck chassis, not an uncommon thing and still happens today on Merc chassis in England.

Rear lights look like Ikarus / Neoplan items.

Fuck me sideways, that is something special. Much want, and potential for divorce (I've always lusted after an 0303).

  • 2 weeks later...

Playing with the scanner settings tonight and I've come across yet another photo of SOE975H, this time at Jolly Rodger Coaches sometime around 1992ish.
But that's not what caught my eye. Have a look at the Fleetline next to it. Can you see something not quite right with the upper deck? Yup, that's right, GOG560N has been on its side at some point and the whole roof has moved slightly to the nearside. Look at the window pillar on the nearside then look at the same one on the offside. See?
No, it isn't an illusion nor is it an issue with the scanner. It really was like that and when I dig up the interior shot I took of it, I'll show you.
Was it unsafe? who knows but a search on Flickr shows up it had the same 'lean' on it when it was with a previous operator so it must have been like it for a while and passed a number of MoTs like it.
