Why are these transmissions so noisy?

I remember travelling on this when I lived in Leeds. Deafening.

Not too different from when I spent four hours on one of these in India. This isn't my video but I did choose to sit at the front. Legroom or eardrums? I think I chose poorly.

Wow ! Bloody noisy! I must say after a few rounds on the Bromley Heritage Running Days driving an RT, I do appreciate the quiet and smooth journey home.

The move to rear engine most certainly improved the Driver's lot!

Not the passenger's lot from that Scania Video! 😂😂😂

I've driven a few B7TL based buses. My favourites were Plaxton President variants with Independent Front Suspension. These felt solid and reliable. Often used on Rail Replacement.

The (what I'll call Mk2) B7TL with a beam front axle isn't as nice to drive. I only drove Wrightbus Geminis though. I echo your comments re: quality.

The Gemini 2 B9TL felt a little less solid. Also the Gearbox was set to Economy so was quite sluggish.

I've driven a couple of comparitively rare Gemini 3 B5TL buses too. Quite nippy for a Double Decker with a 5.1L Engine.

Not reliable though. One needed a new Engine within months of arrival. Also, the bodywork feels extremely flimsy. Everything feel as though its as lightweight as possible; even the window glass is noticeably thinner.

The Upper Deck Windows are like letterboxes and the whole thing reminds me of the first MCW Bodied Leyland Atlanteans, actually...

Interesting you mention the poor quality of MCV Bodies. I've some stories, but I need to get something to eat now... I'll try and find some more bus shite pictures too... 👍 👍 👍 😎 😎 😎

I agree about the Presidents, the ones we bought new were good solid buses. The ex London ones that were bought in 2011-2 less so, they had a hard life before we bought them and were fucking fucked m8. We also have some MCV saloons with B7 and B8 chassis, the windows in those especially the B8s flex that much it makes you think they will fall out.

Wasn't that the Titan? Yes, plenty of great innovation. Were those London-specific buses were they used elsewhere in the country?

London, Reading (12), West Midlands (5),  Manchester (12) bought them new. Lots of people operated them second hand. Got to drive an ex Manchester Gardner engined one on an enthusiasts tour. Couldn't believe how little fuel it used.

I remember traveling on some Ikarus service buses in Romania back in 1991. The windows were already being held in with wooden wedges and they were only a couple of years old.

More bus shyte from the archives as promised... Old photos taken on an ancient telephone...

The Omnidekka was numerically the first of it's type in London and possibly in the UK.

These prototypes had a long dashboard and they were a bit of an ergonomic nightmare.

The production versions had a normal short dashboard; the driving position was closer to the front.

The Enviro 200 shots show an extremely rare MAN 14.220* and an ex Arriva Southern Counties Common or Garden Enviro 200 Dart** on fuel consumption trials.

The reason for choosing MAN and Scania was that they did not need Adblue. Cheaper, innit.

Time proved this to be an unwise decision.

The MAN was joined that year by some MCV bodied examples.

They didn't make ten years in service. Lively- when they were not in the workshop...

Thats it for now... 👍 👍 👍 😎 😎 😎

Other shop names on the front of buses are available (but not in Newcastle where you could only 'Shop at Binns').

Ha! My free bit of advertising was due to me not being able to change the destination display!

Had big boards in the window, so no problems on Rail Replacement!

Classic Northern General buses with Shop at Binns. It seemed all were treated with the same adverts! 👍 👍 👍 😎 😎 😎

Right, some more B&W pics from the early 70's and lets leave Sheffield and go back to the seaside, only Blackpool this time (obviously given the above).

Apologies about crap quality, CBA to spend hours improving them. Metro Cammell bodied Titans were the general order of the day there, but there's plenty of chod to spot.

Marshall bodied AEC Swifts were a surprise order for a former all Leyland operator, (in the days when spottie yooffs were allowed to wander around depots with just a "don't fall down the pits and let us know when you've finished" bit of H&S advice),

I've also posted some tram shite on the last page of here:

RIG 6496 has turned up with one of my local operators. Langston & Tasker are a very rural independent who mainly do schools and rarely venture more than 20 miles from the depot. It's strange to see them running low-floor stuff as they used to have a yard full of elderly Fords and Bedfords not so long ago. It looks odd without the Wrightbus W grille.

A couple from yesterday, EY 680 and 714. The Presidents will not be getting the new livery as they are scheduled for replacement next. They were meant to have gone last year but because Covid struck it has been put back. 714 was numerically the first bus delivered after I started in 2007 and was also the last to be painted in burgundy and cream.

Leningrad, 1970.

The red and blue coaches (and possibly the shy one peeping around the middle coach) with the triangular motif on the front are LAZ-695M's produced by the Lviv Bus Factory, Lviv, Ukraine. The middle one is a Zil-158 which was the main bus model for city bus fleets of the Soviet Union in the 1960s and early 1970s. More than 62,350 were built.

Vicar Lane Bus Station Leeds, opened 1937.

I was wondering which B&W pics from the early 70's to post next, but this shot of West Yorkshire Road Car Company's Vicar Lane Bus Station has decided it for me.

The shot above is taken from where the ADO16 is parked below, behind the Imp and Anglia. This is a 1953 Bristol LS with ECW body that was withdrawn in November 1970, which obviously dates when I took this to early 1970 or late 1969.

SMG6.thumb.JPG.1574ef1fd0770a98edf30f434201c25e.JPG

A visit in 1972 saw these new RE's in service, parked where the right hand Plaxton Leopard is in the pic Martc posted.

1353_a.thumb.jpg.f53ca1a811300686f0b806093a076a47.jpg

In the same parking position, but on the earlier visit, the two previous designs of ECW bodied REs.

If I had held the camera better, LD, LS and RE

RE.thumb.JPG.9bf8e91f9e1deb9e59d0072971a52472.JPG

A couple of VR pictures, a new VR46

VR46.thumb.JPG.b5cdd7212bbd27d1ecc553539199c2fb.JPG

and post renumbering 1911. This ended up being converted to open top and being used on London sightseeing tours by Cityrama.

1911.thumb.jpg.7862e3ec2ff519dd7907b1d93a8443b0.jpg

An FS6B (Bristol's own engine), I think this ended up in Canada.

1757.thumb.jpg.1064a73c698f5fe0e8ac6e59127c3978.jpg

Finally, when I started taking bus pictures, cameras didn't automatically wind on the film or cock the shutter for you, so when you forgot, you ended up with shots like this.
