  1. Having lurched on here for a while, and being much jealous of everyone’s exploits and skills. I thought it was time to introduce my scruffy 1.6 BX Meteor. I didn’t do it earlier as I didn’t think anyone would be interested. I haven’t taken many photographs of any work being done, because it’s just me, getting on and mending stuff that I can do. Any way I have the mechanical skills of a retarded ant, and tend to make things worse, so I have decided to get the work done proper, as it works out cheaper. The car is quite well known in the Citroen Car Club, so I am told, and a few pictures have appeared of it, including one of it lurking in the background on here. The car was collected from Southport, in July 2017, It was “MOTed” we ran it for the rest of the summer, and the summer of 2018until the MOT ran out. It suffered a few faults, including the exhaust falling off, and damaging the car behinds’ sump, causing him to loose all his oil. It has also had one fail to proceed, caused by the coil failing. Most of the interior giffer bodges have been sorted by myself. It has now been welded, new LHM lines, new fuel lines, and other work to make it structurally sound, including new sub-frame mounts and steering work. Next winter will be an engine rebuild as it smokes on the over run, and finally the body will done. New wheels and tyres next month and MOT in March. I love it as it is, it’s comfortable, cruses at the same speed as modern traffic and has everything I need in a car.. The spoiler is being painted as it had the surface finish of crazy paving, and isn’t attached.attachment=236947:image.jpg]. I will also introduce my Acadiane which is trapped in the garage. But here’s a preview, with the MZ languishing in the back ground.
  2. As you may have read in the 'Can we save this?' thread, the answer was 'Yes we can!' Someone on this forum who wishes to remain nameless, fronted the cash to rescue this little Mazda from certain doom at the hands of a banger racer. I've taken custody of the car, but will make sure they get their money back as soon as is physically possible. Perhaps once it's running right, I'll look at some sort of roffle to find it a new home and pay back what it owes me and them. Although it had been sitting 5 years or so, it went through an MOT, so that's a good start. Known faults. - Alternator is kaput. Shouldn't be too hard to find a refurbished one. Presume battery knackered too. - Wheel bearing grumbling. - Running like crap. Will replace fuel and vacuum pipes and add fuel filter. Then perhaps a carb strip down and rebuild. Aisan 980 carb as far as i know, same as the Toyota was, - Flat tyre. It's currently sitting outside with a flat battery and no fuel, so that's not a good start! As I have very little talent, time or money, and suggestions / help greatly appreciated. These are the pictures I have so far - looks good but it's a lot more dull in real life...

This time it's further than I've been for a while and the vehicle is uglier than I've had before. I am off to Devon to collect the red Umm. Transportation number 1, bus.

Following on from my original minge-bag motoring thread (here: http://autoshite.com/topic/10888-new-minge-bag-motoring/) regarding the peasant-spec Peugeot 205 XE I acquired from wackywacerwill (who seems rather quiet of late?), here's another for the LNA I bought from Wuvv last weekend. The collection thread is detailed here: http://autoshite.com/topic/17940-live-international-shite-collection/ As mentioned in it, I was too knackered & hungover on Sunday to make a timely start on the LNA - I did spend a couple of hours washing & hoovering it out, but ideally it needs the full Vulgalour treatment at some point. The paint is flat as a witches tit. I did T cut a couple of areas which had some dark streaks caused by runs from the rubbers (oh err!), and it came up very shiny. I'll probably borrow a mop, as T cutting the whole thing by hand would be rather long-winded and knackering, despite its diminutive proportions. Grot-wise, it's amazingly solid for a 30+ year old Citroen. Only bit I've found so far, was behind the glovebox on the bulkhead (it's maybe 5cm x 3cm). Be an arse to weld a patch in (need to pull out the entire dashboard), so I'll treat it with some rust killer, and look at a sensible way of sealing it to stop the sound-proofing from getting damp. All the external plastic has done the usual 80's car trick of turning grey. Some of the trim tape is knackered, so I'd be as well taking it all off when I polish the bodywork, applying boiled linseed oil / peanut butter, and reattaching with new tape. The OSR bumper corner is borked. I might have scored a new old stock one, if the chap gets back to me. The tyres were old (date code reckons Feb 1988) and cracked before I blasted it up the A1, and I doubt 420 miles at high speed helped matters. Some of the sidewall cracks are now almost circumferential, and there's no danger my MOT man will pass it with them in-situ. Thankfully Tyreleader have Uniroyal Rain Experts in the correct 135/80/13 flavour for £29 each, so I'll be ordering up a new set of boots in the next few days. While away in Europe last month, I'd tried several times to get in touch with a leboncoin vendor flogging a set of Peugeot 104 Sundgau alloys for €125. We were passing literally within 2 miles of his address, but I was rubber-eared. Bah. http://www.leboncoin.fr/equipement_auto/597622945.htm If anyone knows of a set of Samba / 104 / any other 115 x 3 PCD alloys for sale, can you let me know? Ta. Mechanically, it seems pretty good too - Hasn't been serviced for a while (hasn't been covering many miles), so probably do an oil & filter change before the MOT next month. Will then make a list of priorities, and work my way through the various systems, replacing old for new. (Parts are dirt cheap - Clutch kit is £12 from eBay!) Couple of things, though; gear change was always supposedly crap on these, but the selector rod's bent and at the end of its adjustment. 2nd -> 4th are okay, but finding 1st in a rush can be a tad hit & miss. Will investigate further and possibly replace the rod / bushes. If left for a while, the fuel runs back down the line to the tank, and the (cam driven) fuel pump hasn't the OOMPH to pull it back. I think a little 0.5 psi non-return valve from a fish tank might solve this, so I'll source one and give it a go. Did get one job ticked off yesterday - It's never ever had a stereo fitted. I'd sourced an appropriate one from eBay for 30 quid a while back, so in it went. A lot of guddling around behind the dash to find the speaker wires, as although it must have come pre-wired from the factory, they'd helpfully* tucked them deep behind the dash.

So when I posted in Vince70's thread that I was on the lookout for an R50 Bini project for under a grand, I was given the following sage advice from New POD: So in true Autoshite fashion last night I went and bought the cheapest I could find! No collection thread as it all happened so fast, saw the ad on facebook and hot footed over there, made the guy an offer and convoyed home with him before giving him a lift back - if only every purchase/sale was so easy! Was pissing rain last night so haven't had a chance to have a proper look over it but what I know so far is: Jobs: Drivers side mirror held together with electrical tape, Drivers window not working One sidelight out High level brakelight not working (new one included in sale) Nearside headlight aims too high (benefit of driving home in convoy or I might not have spotted it) Discs and Pads needed CV dust covers needed 4 tyres needed Good points: Chilli pack (leather, chrome etc) 17in alloys (I like them) and sport+ suspension fitted from new Reconditioned gearbox fitted 40k ago New Power steering pump fitted 30k ago Documented service history up to 20k ago Bodywork and paint looks excellent (needs a wash though so we will see what that uncovers!) I'm really quite amazed by the amount of history that came with the car given that it has had 7 owners, they clearly all cared enough to keep it, add to it and pass it on which can only be a good thing. Looks like it's wanted for nothing for most of it's life but been a bit neglected the last 2 or 3 years. So here she is: and the price...£350 - I reckon that's a bit of a bargain, could probably sell the wheels, leather and a few other bits then weigh it in and double my money no bother...but I won't be doing that.
  6. So as you'll be no doubt aware by now, I'm the purchaser of the current Autoshite Volvo 740 estate bike thus removing another of these fine machines from circulation. Sorry about that. Unsurprisingly this has been in the making for some time. Undeterred by failing to win the Bucketeer Roffle (and missing out on it before that) I contacted Mr. Tickman of 7, Dundeeish offering coin in exchange for it provided the imminent MOT was passed without too much hassle. Being a kind sort he'd lent it back to Bucketeer in the interim so we put it on hold. Time passed until yesterday and the news that it's still in Englandlandland without test and without time for Tickman to collect. "I still fancy that". Never mind the 50 hour weeks or that it's nearly Christmas. Nor that it's still 300 odd miles away without test. So a plan was formed and within 10 minutes of going up I'd agreed to fetch it and bring it to SVM headquarters in Volvograd. Which is why I'm sitting in my parents house at 0540 on a Sunday morning awaiting FATHA_RML who has agreed to participate in this idiocy. With day insurance arranged and an MOT in Paisley booked we leave at 0600. TL:DR The SVM are at it again.
  7. I thought I'd start a thread for this as I'll probably end up asking all sorts of questions, given that this is my first 'proper' Citroën. So... the ground clearance lever won't go all the way to the highest setting (all others work), which is bad 'cos the book says I need it to do that in order to check the LHM level. It feels like something's seized, so I don't want to force it. Any ideas for a plan of attack would be much appreciated. Next up are the wheels. I now have a set of 205 pepperpots that have just gone off for powder coating & I need to get some tyres for them. The handbook says the car should have 165/70R14s on, the wheels came with 185/65R14 on. Any thoughts about what size I should get please? Cheers.
  8. I think we should probably give the Mighty Dacia its own thread. In short, this car was purchased over the internet, then collected in Romania and driven 2500 miles to Wales. Video of such exploits can be seen here. It is a 1990 Dacia 1310 estate, which is, in effect, just a Renault 12 built in Romania. Lots of bits are locally sourced, including the Solex-knock-off carburettor. While it uses the later 1397cc engine, it is pretty much just a Renault 12 with a Romanian accent, and a bit too much plastic mascara. Oddly, the radiator is Iranian. The steering wheel looks like one from a Talbot. The seats are very comfortable, even after 2500 miles. The drive back has already been covered, so let's focus on now. This morning started well. I say that. The car wouldn't start. Again. I wonder if it's actually got the right carburettor. The fresh spark plugs fitted a couple of hundred miles ago are already sooty. I have played around with the idle mixture again, but leaning it off just makes it stumble and misfire. Air cleaner looks brand new and all pipework seems to be sound and in the correct place. It stinks of richness, which I guess old cars generally do, but my gut feel is it's going to spectacularly fail the emissions test. Oh well. It's booked in for pre-MOT tomorrow. Still can't find the slightest hint of any rear seatbelt mountings, but there are other fails expected, which is why it's a pre-MOT. Need to see how big the problems are!

Woke up this morning, had a little time before I had to leave the house for work, had a quick look at what’s new for sale on Retro Rides and saw an ad for a W124 200E manual, located 15 miles from home. I had no intention of buying a car today but I had to have it! I called the seller and arranged a viewing. Faults: 2 x rusty front wings (TADTS) 1 x rusty rear arch Needs a polish Tracking is out because new track rod end was fitted for MoT Engine has oil leak/s Good points: It’s a W124 200E! 5 speed manual transmission New clutch Brand new MoT Superb MoT history 4 x as new Continental tyres Last owner for 15 years, her husband before that for 4 years Very tidy MB-Tex interior Drives well All electrics work The dealer kindly delivered the car to my house but I managed a pez station shot on route: Plans: Remove front wings, cut away rust and apply plenty of wob. In-situ similar repair for rear arch Clean and polish Service engine Adjust tracking Leave patina and enjoy the car as it is I will update this thread once progress is made. Hopefully these two will become good friends.
  10. I really need to unload some of the cars. Doesn't matter how much I try and justify it to myself, I've just got way too many at the moment. This is a large problem that became very apparent when I started looking at moving workshop to somewhere larger to consolidate where I keep my stuff and hopefully make some headroom. The realisation struck me that I've got enough work to keep me going until retirement, and it's simply not worth it. I need to cut some stuff out and make a clean break I think. Current list. 1972 Beetle 1200 restoration (keeping and finishing, it's Sarah's car so probably doesn't count, to be fair I've done a fair bit on this) 2000 beetle 2.0 (Sarah's car, needs a battery and some welding doing, but given she's not driving it's fine, and it can be quickly made into a car again. I really need to keep this one too. 1984 Caravelle restoration (keeping and finishing, had this forever and can't part with it.) 1974 Subaru Beetle (can't really sell this one, made a promise on it and need to see it through) 2006 Mondeo ST 2.2 Diesel (I'm keeping this, as it's my daily driver) So that brings us to the stuff I really need to get rid of. 2002 Mondeo ST220 in Infra Red (I bought this because nothing appreciates like a fast ford, it's a project but an easy one, and I've not touched it for three years now. It's in a dry garage, this can be for sale. I keep missing the guy with the garage access to get the pictures done Here's one from just before it went into storage. I can't imagine being that it's sat in a dry garage it looks a lot worse. Battery will be shot, needs a window reg, they're about £20, I might have one. It had a bit of a sump weep and needed discs and pads, and probably tyres too. I don't remember seeing any rot in there, but it may have started to go a bit by the front wings. NOW SOLD S124 200TE, rusty. Currently at a friends in Corby who's been apparently doing the welding on it for me. I'm yet to see evidence of this. I've basically written it off as a bad experience. If anyone wants this please get in touch. It does drive, but it's rough as arseholes due to degraded ignition bits and very rusty, although it might be less rusty now.   11. Hello everybody, just wanted to introduce myself and my capri to the forum. Its a 1981 2.0S mk3 that's been in the family since 1990 and has been passed down from my father to me some years ago. The story is that my father bought the car inn 1990 as his escort xr3 was to expensive to insure and his first child was on its way, so the escort went and he bought this from a man in the Selby area. (my father being a ford trained mechanic, he did like his ford back then) He drove the car for about 3 years and with a new house and me and my brother on our way he had to find a family car that was my economical and cheaper to use than this, and so for the next ten years it spent time in a relatives front garden, then made its way from one barn to another until 2003. This was when he decided to restore the car himself and so we dragged it back home and plonked it into his garage. Sadly due to work he just couldn't find the time for her and so for another 10 years she sat unloved until 2013 when I was given her. The picture above was taken on the day we dragged her out of the garage, now I was still an apprentice living with mum and dad so all I could do at the time was put her in a council garage safely tucked away. This picture was taken in June 2019 as she is now. I have now purchased my own home and I'm currently working on modernising that, I also need to build a garage for the capri so that I'll have a dry place to work on her. My plan is to restore the car so that I can enjoy using it on days out and even holidays to the south west. I wont be doing a full body strip down resto but she does require some welding work on her back end. As can be seen from the photo's the rear valance and rear corners have gone and there are some holes in the sills at the rear. There's also a small hole in one of the rear chassis rails just around where the fuel tank is mounted to. I have obtained a new pattern part rear valance and I can get pattern new rear corner out skins as well, I will also be removing the tow bar as this car will never tow a trailer or caravan again. I will be needing new leaf springs as the ones on it are pretty well worn. I may be needing a new fuel tank if the old one cannot be saved but I'll make that judgement when the time comes, but apart from the rear end the car is mostly rot free. From the back of the doors forward everything is pretty much solid. Floors are good and the doors are ok (I have a spare passenger door if I decided to replace it). The scuttle panel is solid with no bubbling any where on it and the dashboard is not cracked which for me is a bonus as I've seen lots of capris with cracked dashboards due to the sun. I just hope my father can remember how this all goes back together. I do still have the original steering wheel which is inn a poor state and requires recovering, currently a mountney one is fitted which I actually prefer to the original one so I'll be keeping it on the car. The engine is the original 2.0 pinto with the 205 block, this will be getting a full strip down and rebuild when I get to it. Well that's all I can think of to say right now, hopefully within the next year and can get my garage built and start working on this car and maybe start to actually enjoy it. 😉
  12. As many of you might have read on the grin thread and my thread about yank headlights on Volvo 740's, I should have acquired myself this one. I've just got a few pics of said Volvo pre rescue as it sits. For those who don't know, it's an 88 740 estate in 2.3 auto GLE spec (my favourite!) which was owned by my sisters boyfriends grandad. He passed away this year and the cars just been sat unused since mid 2015. The family are clearing the property and I was told the Volvo and others were going to most likely go for scrap. I said I'd take the Volvo and asked for a price only to be told I could have it! The Wolseley 1300 apparently is already spoken for so hopefully that will be saved or at least donate some parts. The Volvo should become mine at some point but the caravan and Omega will probably get weighed in. So here are the few pics I have to go on. It's a low miler at 90k and seems to of only done a couple of thousand miles between tests. Most of the fails seem to be for stupid stuff. So the plan at the moment will be to try to get it running and moving then try to get it back home. At the moment it's a 100 miles or so away. To be continued...

  14. Been looking for a project and finally got one, a Scabrous Saab 96. Excuse the shite photos. It was colleckshuned from a wet place (Wales) a friendly man with a Recovery van was pressganged.

It seems like it's time to have a new thread dedicated to the on-going progress (or otherwise) of the Beige BX, without people having to trawl through pages of stuff about the original purchase. All that malarkey can be found here. The new thread will make it easier to change the title as required, too. For works completed to date in the old thread go here. Today's progress at SF17 was MEGA. Much work was carried out on the fuel system by Joe and many of the assembled Shiters; the fuelling problem finally being cracked when Joe fitted one of the Pleasure Wagon's clear fuel filters! There was a stuttering journey down the ramp... Fuel was added... and it ran! A quick ride round the campsite revealed that the spheres are completely shagged, as the suspension was entirely bereft of travel. On the plus side, there are two new spheres in the boot. Dead chuffed to see it run, and have a go at piloting it across the field, though It's headed back to Castle_Cleland after SF, after which we need to have a think about the best way to go from here.
  16. Today I bought myself a... ...proper french pile of shite. Needs a bit of love...but runs/has an MOT. Seems pretty honest, if a little neglected. The drive home was conveniently short, about a mile, so it's not yet been fully road tested. Runs a bit rough, but seems to go like stink for what it is. Feels old. Smells nice and oily. Seats comfy. Happy bunny. Been making do with just the CR-V in the family and while it's brilliant, it's not really all that much fun to bomb around in. The balance is restored.
  17. The bloke who helps with our garden has a thing about Range Rovers, the 'classic' kind. He'd wanted one for years, and eventually, 4 years ago, paid too much for one. It came with the usual complement of non-working electrical goodies, general scruffiness and an acquired taste colour, especially with the beautiful* colour coded alloys. I have laughed at this heap for the past 4 years. I've got two other Series LR's, plus an '84 Mini, and the idea of BL producing anything of greater complexity than a wheelbarrow made me feel ill. I tried to explain to my wife why the Range Rover was such a heap: she needed to imagine the build quality and attention to detail of her Mini, scaled up to something trying hard to be a luxury car. She nodded sagely, and agreed that buying one would be a really shit idea, and could only lead to much frustration and expenditure. Then, last December, the bloke announced to me that he was sick of the Range Rover ending up in the garage every month with a FTP. Which it did, pretty much. I don't know why, but I asked him how much he wanted for it. I wasn't even drunk. So, through that weird process where a car you've only sniggered at becomes something you're thinking you might actually want, I looked at what I was thinking of buying: Hmmm. Looks OK so far, no?
  18. So, I went and saw a little Reliant again today... Bought! I have the logbook and everything. Will come with the original, f*cked engine not fitted. It does roll, tyres do hold air. Has been parked up for two to three years since the engine seized after a core plug fell out. First challenge, get it home...

I've noticed that some people on here have imagination, and get through a wide variety of different brands of cars Then there's me, who after hitting the armagedden button when the 406 threw me a load of urgent work that I didn't have the time or money to perform by it's MOT obtained yet another french car! My car history really has been a bit samey Landrover Series 3 (PMA124Y) Peugeot 206 (W636OAU) Ford Puma (Y874RCB) Citroen ZX (R385VRD) Citoren XM (R267PGF) Citroen ZX (L592NWK) Citroen Xantia (R499AMV) Renault Laguna (YT55ENP) Renault Laguna (FV51FYP) Peugeot 406 (HY02FUA) 2 out of 10 of the above are still alive... And as of tonight Citroen ZX (R579SLX) So over 11 cars, a definite pattern! But I like boring, I like samey, I like reliable* Current status? Well our very own Bramz7 is somewhere in the north of england (maybe even nearly scotland) delivering a car. At almost possibly maybe 4.30/5pm he will arrive in Derby and collect Bub's ZX. Following a very silent drive to my house in Oxfordshire as the ZX has no radio we shall convey ourselves to his house, and I shall drive home... Moar later!
  20. Hi all, new to the forum. Thought you might be interested in what I've got myself into I'd been after my first classic car for a while. If it's big and made in the 70s I'm interested. Looked at few things like P6s, Zodiacs, Victors, SD1s and various other things. Problem was I didn't want to spend a boatload of money on something that looked alright but underneath was actually a total heap. The solution was to buy a complete heap in the first place and spend the money fixing it. So in January I went ahead and bought this from a colleague at work who was moving away and needed to get shot of it. It's a part finished restoration (I prefer not started) and it needs a whole load of help if it's going to stand any chance of using a road again. Pros It's right up my street. Granada Coupes are quite odd and certainly stand out from the norm. It still has the original engine, box, interior and most trim. It came with loads of panels I need to repair it (mostly original Ford stock). It came with so many spares I could probably build a few Granadas and still have stuff left over. It was cheap. Cons Most of the front end has been cut off. Most of the body structure is quite rotten. It's going to take me ages. I work at a restoration company and my boss kindly allows me to keep the car there. So I've got access to all the gear I need to restore it. I've been busy on the car for a while now so will post more pics over the coming days. Cheers
  21. Mrs Dustman has a dash cam she wants me to fit to her '99 frog face Corolla. It came with a hard wire kit as opposed to the usual fag lighter lead, so I might as well make a decent* job of it and hide the wiring completely. Trouble is I can't remember how I got the radio pod out when I fitted the DAB unit she now has. I've also got a few dash illumination bulbs to change so I might as well do it all in one hit while it's a sunny afternoon. A bit of googling comes up with the US spec dash which appears to be different from the European model, or the 2002-on model. I seem to remember spudging out the dash vents to access some bolts/rivets. Failing that, is there an easier place to get a switched live from (besides the radio) that doesn't involve destroying the car's interior?
  22. Hot on the heels of last week’s collectioneering of a Xantia, another collection starts here and now. Well it is probably a collection as long as the car is as described, but I am optimistic. Clues. It’s enormous yet quite cramped. Never had one before and it could be considered blessed, saintly even!
  23. With the YRV more or less finished i think its about time i got my arse in gear and sort out my Subaru. I have owned this since 2012 when it was a beige truck with grot in all the usual places. I spent an age welding it up and swapping panels over from my other totally rotted out one before prepping the body to the best of my ability. Before paying to get it painted in vw corrida red 2pack. Once put back together it did look quite tidy. Fast forward to 2019,the mot has long since expired,the expensive paint job has faded and rust has burst through the rear arches and sills. Bummer..
