  1. Hi all, new to the forum. Thought you might be interested in what I've got myself into I'd been after my first classic car for a while. If it's big and made in the 70s I'm interested. Looked at few things like P6s, Zodiacs, Victors, SD1s and various other things. Problem was I didn't want to spend a boatload of money on something that looked alright but underneath was actually a total heap. The solution was to buy a complete heap in the first place and spend the money fixing it. So in January I went ahead and bought this from a colleague at work who was moving away and needed to get shot of it. It's a part finished restoration (I prefer not started) and it needs a whole load of help if it's going to stand any chance of using a road again. Pros It's right up my street. Granada Coupes are quite odd and certainly stand out from the norm. It still has the original engine, box, interior and most trim. It came with loads of panels I need to repair it (mostly original Ford stock). It came with so many spares I could probably build a few Granadas and still have stuff left over. It was cheap. Cons Most of the front end has been cut off. Most of the body structure is quite rotten. It's going to take me ages. I work at a restoration company and my boss kindly allows me to keep the car there. So I've got access to all the gear I need to restore it. I've been busy on the car for a while now so will post more pics over the coming days. Cheers
  2. I thought I'd start a thread for this as I'll probably end up asking all sorts of questions, given that this is my first 'proper' Citroën. So... the ground clearance lever won't go all the way to the highest setting (all others work), which is bad 'cos the book says I need it to do that in order to check the LHM level. It feels like something's seized, so I don't want to force it. Any ideas for a plan of attack would be much appreciated. Next up are the wheels. I now have a set of 205 pepperpots that have just gone off for powder coating & I need to get some tyres for them. The handbook says the car should have 165/70R14s on, the wheels came with 185/65R14 on. Any thoughts about what size I should get please? Cheers.

This thread is to document the adventures, and lets be honest misadventures of me and my vehicles, the main focus of this thread is to document my Range rover P38 i bought at the not so idiotic age of 17 from a chap in Worcestershire. Pics are few and far between. Originally I passed my test and my Dad wanted me to buy something small and economical, i left the house telling everyone I was going out to view a citroen Saxo VTS, And rocked up with this a few hours later! My Parent IE my Dad was speachless and the rest of 'em. Well either laughed with pity or walked away!! It went haywire when I told them it was a 4.6 Vogue with LPG 🤑 Spec wise. Vogue specification Wood/leather steering wheel 16ish way seats with 2 person memory + heaters Harman Karden sound system Satnag 4spd Auto with sport mode "chortle" 18" Comet alloys Monte Carlo Blue Air suspension Climate pack - heaterd front and rear windows. And a few other odds and ends . The standard practice after buying such a car is to start driving it hard and long distance Daily.. Of course it got covered in shit from all the country lane jaunts, My Main love of cars comes from fixing them and cleanin' 'em myself, as such the old girl had to look her best, As odd and knobby as it sounds I do get rather nerdy when it comes to cleanin' Washmitts and speshul buckets anorl!!   4. So many broken picture links! I'll fix it one day. I feel I can finally unlurk properly now that I have something worthy of Autoshite to post about. Day One In the cold light of Day Two Came with some great features. The best thing about vinyl is that you *can* scrub it clean and with this old boat that was needed; everything was sticky and left a black residue on the hands. I've only been able to bring myself to spend an hour on the driver's door, the rest will have to wait for now. Doesn't look as big as it feels, weirdly. This is going to be my new daily in a few months, just got to get through a lot of cleaning and a bit of fettling. She's actually not that bad overall and only cost me £450 (plus £25 day insurance to collect her). The problems? >Quite a few rust blebs, but nothing serious or structural >Handbrake needs adjusting, I have to chock the wheels when parked on the drive >Driver's door window doesn't work >Probably decades of hand grease and silicone spray, built up in alternating layers. The engine bay is cleaner than the cabin. >Bonnet rams don't hold up the bonnet. >Neither do the boot rams. >Garage fitted electric fuel pump has no supressor, interferes with the LW/MW radio >PYE tape deck needs new belts, music played on it sounds like it's underwater >Bad previous respray with water contamination. But you know what, none of that matters. She's supremely comfortable and with some TLC over the summer should be in fine fettle. I'm not sure whether or not the people that look with face agog and jaw slack as I drive past are impressed, worried or amazed that a beige Princess with a brown roof still exists and is out on the road with someone a long way from pensionable age driving it.

  6. Didn't bother to do a collection thread as was a 30min drive so fairly boring. Yesterday I won this Which is effectively going to replace the civic and the xantia. Picked car from a bodywork guy in foreign lands (Yorkshire). First thoughts are that I think it has been sitting for a while but started straight up. Apart from service bits and potentially a cambelt everything seems to be good with it. Comes pre dented. Current is differently abled tax so that will need to be changed. Windscreen has small crack in passenger side. Runs really cold, this is after 30 miles of motorway Mind you it honks. Properly honks. Not as much as the focus I got from Shadow but not far off. List of jobs Oil change Spark plugs Air filter Thermostat Rear boot struts Front discs and pads Cam belt plus bits Ball joints Drop links Rear anti roll bar bushes Stereo code Windscreen crack Swimming pool emptied from boot wheel well Seal rear light clusters And a big does of cleaning

Woke up this morning, had a little time before I had to leave the house for work, had a quick look at what’s new for sale on Retro Rides and saw an ad for a W124 200E manual, located 15 miles from home. I had no intention of buying a car today but I had to have it! I called the seller and arranged a viewing. Faults: 2 x rusty front wings (TADTS) 1 x rusty rear arch Needs a polish Tracking is out because new track rod end was fitted for MoT Engine has oil leak/s Good points: It’s a W124 200E! 5 speed manual transmission New clutch Brand new MoT Superb MoT history 4 x as new Continental tyres Last owner for 15 years, her husband before that for 4 years Very tidy MB-Tex interior Drives well All electrics work The dealer kindly delivered the car to my house but I managed a pez station shot on route: Plans: Remove front wings, cut away rust and apply plenty of wob. In-situ similar repair for rear arch Clean and polish Service engine Adjust tracking Leave patina and enjoy the car as it is I will update this thread once progress is made. Hopefully these two will become good friends.

And to mix things up even more I'm off on a collection caper today. Had first refusal on it and was expecting it to come around in a year, but things soon changed and no way was I going to pass up on it. It may well render the second Xantia redundant as I've got a really good feeling about this motor. In the meantime here are some snaps of the Range Rover. As usual it was a car I said I would probably never buy due to their reliability*. I have said the same of Jag XJR, XJS, XK8 and I have had all of those now. Basically the moment I declare buying a particular car is impractical or improbable, I end up buying one. Things to note on the P38. It's a nice colour with tidy body. The EAS has been removed. It runs and drives lovely and it doesn't have enough electrical problems to hinder progress. The main one is the driver's side window not working, but that should be fixable. I've tried changing the outstation, that didn't fix it. Might be wiring under the seat. Other than that I bought it and took it for an MOT the very next day, and it passed. Since then it had what seemed like a battery drain, but since unplugging the RF thingy for the remote locking and putting on a proper lead-acid battery, which the car can actually charge, unlike the modern lead-calcium batteries, it has been perfect. I will treat it to a full service soon. Stay tuned for the latest collection later today!
  9. First things first, this is a project that I haven’t got time for, so maybe come back to the thread in a few months. I saw this very limited edition car for sale, it was in Bradford as an MOT failure at £360. A forum member let’s call him ‘John’ (his forum name gives it away, also his name is John.) He lives nearby and went to see the car for me. He called to inform me that they would sell the car for £300 delivered to John’s drive. Where it will be staying until I can get around to it. The 2014 MOT history said “bodywork damaged” it appears that the car has been grazed on the near side, which I think took the wing mirror off and left the rare bodykit slightly bruised. It failed two months ago on the rear axle, nsr shock and a front tyre. In theory, £80 for a used axle, £35 for two rear shocks, £30 for a tyre. A bit of labour to shove the new axle on, a new mot and we should be a cheap fix... Anyway today is just pay and follow the man to the driveway thread. ... Clue number 1: They made this limited edition in three colours, mine is the least rare. Yet, the best colour. (Allegedly less than 100 imported into the UK, because they didn’t register them properly with the DVLA we don’t know how many are left.) Clue numero two: Its the stupidest looking thing ive ever seen, but I’ve always wanted one. I found forum posts from years ago stating I need one of these immediately!!! Clue numberino thrice: The tyre valve covers are always missing. Clue nombre quatre: It makes the Cactus look like a beige Hyundai Elantra. Clue number 5: I laugh every time I see a picture of one. ... To the Cactus!!!!
  10. After several years here I'll fully admit I am not a seasoned chod-veteran like many, but here's my tosh. I'll begin with my dad and American chod. During my teenage years this was the toy barn: My first adventure in rebuilding began with my dad's 1952 GMC truck. Started like this. Freshly imported from a dry state with a solid body. Rear axle had been dragged around for a while and the drums were worn half away. 228 cubic inches of straight six with knackered rings. Rebuild commenced. Spent a year rebuilding the engine with all fresh bits imported from the states. Neglected to acid dip it, and turned out one of the splash oil bores was clogged with crud. 500 miles later the big ends melted and fused. Much swearing, much vehicle aimed violence. Out comes that lump. This prime piece of chod donated it's heart. 350ci of v8 muscle*. Actually originated in a smog tune Camaro, so about as shite a v8 as you can pick. Truck now owned by a family friend looking like this: My own first motor was this. 1972 VW Beetle 1302s Lasted 500 miles. Failed on rust. Got it on the ramp and it had rusted right across the rear end. Engine was about to damn fall out. Whole thing needed a new floor plan. Got broken for parts. That got replaced with this: Golf 1.4i cl In around 2006. 72,000 miles on it at the time. One old lady owner from new, giffer driven, full VW service history. Bargain at £1k. Much work was done Now at 156,000. Syncromesh dead in 2nd and 3rd. Very noisy tappets. Engine mounts shot. Rotten jacking points. Bugger won't die. MOT runs out next week, and I feel really bad at the idea of breaking it. Going to stick it in and see if it will pass an MOT, but I'm getting fed up of having squeaky bumhole journeys that it will drop a valve. 18 months ago, added this to the fleet: Scirocco 1.8 8v carb £1k on ebay, advertised with one line of information. 67,000 miles, FSH, 3 owners from new, mainly giffer driven, but owned by a young guy for a year before I bought it. Solid body, decent engine. Mk2 Golf GTD gearbox with a massively tall 5th gear (2k RPM = 80mph). Saving the pennies while commuting yo! Issues have been that it has not had it's perishables repaired in a long time, so since I've had it it's had: New hard brake lines New braided soft brake lines De-rusted and waxoyled fuel lines. New timing belt and aux belt. New temp sensor. A new CV Carb rebuild. In between I briefly flirted with a a Renault 4 van and a BMC FG350 Ambulance (converted to a camper). No photos of these. There's also been this 1987 Scirocco GTX 150,000 I bought locally as a cat C write off with the intention of repairing. Then found out the A-pillar, the B-pillar and rear chassis were buckled. Would never have been right again. Broke her for parts. Finally Jaguar S-Type 3.0 v6. Recently bought this for a charity rally. T-reg 1999, so think it still counts as chod. Plus it cost £750 and has done 165,000 miles.

  12. Oooops I did it again......was a song produced two years after this automobile. I told myself ages ago that I’d thin the fleet down and cut down spending ...... it didn’t last long. If this new purchase is a worthy keeper then I may part with the 50 quid omega. But let’s not be hasty yet! transport steed of choice is my 05 discovery and a trailer, no pics yet as it’s still pitch black outside.   13. Train tickets booked from a train station 30 miles away to save £9 on the recommendation of the Mrs Mrs booked and primed ready to drop me off at said train station. Mobile tool kit primed and ready, missing almost every vital component due to EU regulations about leccy tape and screwdrivers on trains (I left them all at my mums house yesterday).   14. So, someone posted on another thread a link to an Ebay listing for an LHD '74 Marina listed on Ebay. I called a little while ago and talked to the seller, and the story is that it was a good running and driving car 10 years ago, but has been neglected and won't run. I'm debating with myself about whether or not I want to take it on as a project. I know these had a terrible reputation when new, but at the same time they're actually legitimately rare in the US. I have seen one in person, and most of the estimates I've seen put the number of survivors at 10-20(although I don't know how much we can trust that). There's some definite appeal in the engine familiarity for me with the MGB. I MIGHT have to convert it to a manual though. In addition, there's the issue of having it shipped a couple hundred miles to me. It's listed now for $700...if I could do $500 it might be a make or break for me. Any thoughts here on it? EDIT: The car as it sits now is an automatic. If I swapped the transmission, it would be to a manual. Sorry for any confusion from my incorrect statement!
  15. Car : y reg Omega 3.2 MV6 196K Rocker Gaskets replaced last summer at about 183K with genuine parts. Proper cleaned out breather tubes on top of engine. . Oil changed at 193K with genuine GM Fully Syth and Filter. (Cast Housing) No leaks until 3 weeks ago. Started small, I always check the oil before a long journey (and I do a lot of them) and I've been adding a bit more often but now on Thursday I had to top up after 100 miles into a Journey, and Then again 80 Miles later (on Sunday) and again this morning at 70 miles into a Journey, AND then another 70 miles this afternoon, and now 70 miles on it needs more. I calculate about 6 litres for about 450 miles. That's a lot of rust proofing on the exhaust and lots of it on the floor. I've not had it up on the ramps, (as Snow and rain and doesn't fit in my garage) but had it running and had a look at the filter housing area, and seems to be pouring down the back of the engine. At first I wondered if the little wiring plug next to the Oil Filter Housing is likely to leak? but seems to be above that. (Car is too low to see without ramps) When the Rocker gaskets were leaking before it was all very slow. Yes there was an advisory on the MOT, but nothing like this. And it hasn't been leaking in at least 12K since I did them. So what are we thinking ? I blame JohnK !!!!! There is oil on the rocker cover because Spillage

It seems like it's time to have a new thread dedicated to the on-going progress (or otherwise) of the Beige BX, without people having to trawl through pages of stuff about the original purchase. All that malarkey can be found here. The new thread will make it easier to change the title as required, too. For works completed to date in the old thread go here. Today's progress at SF17 was MEGA. Much work was carried out on the fuel system by Joe and many of the assembled Shiters; the fuelling problem finally being cracked when Joe fitted one of the Pleasure Wagon's clear fuel filters! There was a stuttering journey down the ramp... Fuel was added... and it ran! A quick ride round the campsite revealed that the spheres are completely shagged, as the suspension was entirely bereft of travel. On the plus side, there are two new spheres in the boot. Dead chuffed to see it run, and have a go at piloting it across the field, though It's headed back to Castle_Cleland after SF, after which we need to have a think about the best way to go from here.

So here's my 'new' '95 XJ600S/N. As a Motorcycle obsessed adult I have recently decided it is time to get myself a 'big bike' and stop running around on Chinese hairdryers with the same sized engine as my dad's lawnmower. So me and @stereotypewent to collect the bike after a bit of a viewing in what would be considered a sketchy part of town. The bike had been used as a 'field bike' (no fields nearby) and had no ignition barrel which honestly amazed me the bike was still there as no keys required (aware this is a red flag right there but did confirm as not stolen before purchase). After speaking to the owner on the phone it seems the bike had been purchased to ride about with his son as the son had a dirtbike but the owner wasn't a fan of 2 wheels and had no intention of getting it back on the road. The asking price was £350 which for a 600cc motorbike would barely get you an engine and a frame these days. So after looking at the bike, totting up the parts required to get this through an MOT and road ready (these can be two different things sometimes), and haggling down to £280 I socially distance shook hands and pushed the bike home with @stereotype's help on the hills. Now if I was a more sensible person then I likely wouldn't have purchased this bike, but as my Dad said -A bargain but alot of work, just how I like it-. I'm no stranger to swinging a spanner but the list of jobs is quite long, though more on that later. For now here's some pictures as bought. Little tired pushing it up a hill Finally back home Trying to convince myself I love wiring on bikes (And failing) Pretending I can go broom broom choo choo So onto the nitty gritty of what is to come, here is the list of jobs that will be happening to the bike over the next however long (depending on variables such as other projects, work, money, life, cheesecake) Chain and sprockets need replaced - a job I would do with most 2nd hand Bikes Speedometer assembly fitted - Have recieved the unit from eBay but will need frame fabricated to mount All 3 locks replaced - Ditching the silly eBay non locking fuel filler and fitting Ignition barrel and replacing seat catch so can use same key for all 3 (too many keys in my life as is) Replace front fork seals and dust covers - Fork seals somewhere between seeping and gushing hydraulic fluid Rear shock - Super crusty and very soft, though unsure if that's a Divvy level of soft or a replace me level of soft Brake discs and Pads Front and Rear - Likely with stripped and cleaned calipers Plastics and Fairings - Plastics on the bike are a bit haggard and pretty sure this was once a fully faired Divvy so still deciding which direction to go (fully naked wasteland or fibreglass fairings) Full Service - including Valve clearances and carb clean/rebalance Fuel Tank + Petcock need a good clean Exhaust sorted - deciding whether to just replace right hand muffler or sploodge on a stainless 4-1 system to remove muffler from centre stand area Wiring - Wire in eBay Ignition barrel and reloom lighting circuit for indicators and front light unit (and tidying the mess seen in the above picture) Fit indicators all round Add some mirrors Either rebuild or replace both brake master cylinders New Clutch and Throttle cables Either align current headlight or fit replacement if adding fairing Both new tyres Add a rear grab handle and possibly a frame to hold luggage Also considering full strip, rust removal and repaint as is quite crusty in general. As I said before, long list, and any project always includes at least 10% more jobs than anticipated. Am I a muppet for buying this? Probably. Do I regret it? Not yet.

  20. With the YRV more or less finished i think its about time i got my arse in gear and sort out my Subaru. I have owned this since 2012 when it was a beige truck with grot in all the usual places. I spent an age welding it up and swapping panels over from my other totally rotted out one before prepping the body to the best of my ability. Before paying to get it painted in vw corrida red 2pack. Once put back together it did look quite tidy. Fast forward to 2019,the mot has long since expired,the expensive paint job has faded and rust has burst through the rear arches and sills. Bummer..
  21. Now in my mucky hands is this S Type Mondeo Lincoln. It's not like a Mondeo Lincoln though, just uses some of the bits as it's from a time when jaguar was experiencing some 'technical' issues. It has managed to hang onto the feel of a premium car but for the use of cost saving interior plastics made from the same gear that land Rover used in the discovery 2 of the same era, I know, I have one of those too! That has some BMW switches in it though. This jaag was cheap. Why did I buy it? All I wanted really was a small convertible for the summer to smoke around in, this is the polar opposite. The price was good but these cars are without their expensive issues. I liked the body. It's virtually rust free, a freak of nature and it had a set of premium tyres on it which suggested it's had some money chucked at it. That's all I wanted really from it. The bolt on stuff and mechanicals are fairly easy to sort out, plus I can upgrade as I feel fit. Today I've been bonding with this machine. It's got to beat the 3 series I have as a good daily or it's out. It's going to be a tall order, the 318 is bionic! I have many miles to do in the next few months, I need a motorway cruiser auto. The odd jaunt for a few hundred miles is the 318's and my clutch legs limit! Now, this car has been owned previously by a few members on here, the work it requires is because it is a cheap car and 20 years old and has a jaguar badge on it. There are a few issues with it. As said, it has to be put into immediate service. I've owned it 2 days and it's already done over 300 miles, and will do all that again tomorrow! So let's get started! After about 100 miles yesterday, I reversed it for the first time in my ownership and when braking the noise was alarming! Had a look and the outer rear brake pad was metal on the disc. I only had another 60 miles to go! A phone call on the move saw a set in stock back home to be picked up. Sweet. That was yesterday, I've got a day now to change the rear pads and sort out the dropped headlamps with a couple of screws... A couple of hours it'll be Sorted... He says... WIND BACK CALIPERS! Yes, they are. My special tool? Sorry? What? No tool? Well, I cobbled together a bar and a pair of molies but Christ, that was messing about! I wanted to secure the caliper to the mounting to hold it still but the sliders internal thread was cross threaded on both sliders, so I had to tap them out first. It worked but not without a fight. Then my neighbour came over to have a nose at the new aquisition... Him: Morning, how you getting on"?, Me: "Shit, you haven't got a brake caliper tool have you"? Him: "Yeah, I'll go get it". LIFESAVER!!! Sticky slider syndrome ^ Fully padded up ^ I took a look around under there, it's nearly all shot. Most ball joints are exposed to the elements so all need replacing but not before a decent jet wash. There's little play in the joints so all that goes on the list of parts and graft! Wheels on, I loosened and torqued all the wheel nuts around the car and done the Tyre pressures, we were running soft all round. Next was the front lights. A screw mod can be done but I took the back off the units and they were, well toast. Nothing much holding the inner lenses still at all. There was only one thing for it... I had readied myself for this. I got hold of a replacement lamp mounting kit with all parts made from nylon. This involved dissecting the lamp which was tough! The mounts that came out, or what was left of them were weaker than Jacobs crackers and just crumbled. To get the bumper off, the plastic under tray bolts were all seized so I had to grind them off. More knackered parts were seen. The auto box cooler has shed most of it's cooling fins, the radiator is sweating and the power steering is hemorrhaging fluid on full lock. There's also a coolant leak at the thermostat housing and there's a high pitch whine at 1000 RPM which turns out to be the alternator. More for the list. Still, back to the lights. I need to be able to see tonight so I took a level off the tourings lights and marked on to a wheely bin, these are pretty spot on. Then I can use the bin for the Jaags lights and I won't be far off Going back together nicely it was a good time to run some tcut over the faded lenses. They need a more intense compound and a machine but will do for now. Looks smart yo! Then it got dark... I then drove 120 miles in it and drove it like it was stolen. It had it, all of it! Slight brake judder at 90 and I couldn't get the alignment done as I had no time (see above pics) So now we have to price up priorities like the knackered joints on the rear and a full service, two Goodyears and investigate the power steering leak which, I'll hazard a guess at the rack seals are fubard. So in summary, I got a bargain barge that has it's fair share of issues, the interior quality is a bit shocking in places but when the hammer is down, none of this matters! It fits in, it can be a proper giffer cruiser with radio two on at 30mph but it'll turn into a bruiser with some oldskool hardcore at a tonne. It's come to a good home.

  23. Been looking for a project and finally got one, a Scabrous Saab 96. Excuse the shite photos. It was colleckshuned from a wet place (Wales) a friendly man with a Recovery van was pressganged.
  24. So i have been between employment since June after telling the Rac where to stick their job. Trouble is after 17 years of having a orange van outside my front door i now need a means of commuting (unless i get a job that supplies wheels). Still my situation means that although i have various vehicles scattered on my drive a dedicated work ride was a must. I plan on working local to home so a cheap fuel efficient old ride would do me fine. I fancied a diesel Bx and came close to buying a cheap one in south London that was gassing into it's coolant but thought better of it. Looking through ebay i spotted a genuine giffer owned Daihatsu YRV turbo that had sprung a fluid leak and lost drive for a reasonable £400. Trouble was it was banana yellow flavour. But the thought of a small jap automatic car with a turbo and 130bhp did seem like the perfect to and from work car solution so i started looking around for one in a more subtle colour. After a quick scan of the usual sites i found a cheap broken Daihatsu in the wastelands near Walsall.
  25. This evening I venture forth into hitherto unknown lands (Kirkintilloch) to collect my latest acquisition. Which, naturally, has issues. I have purchased my first line of defence. Which appears to have antigravity properties More will follow this evening...
