Good shout. I’ll try that, since it’s easy to do I might try it on the inlet manifold - head join too, just need a replacement gasket.
At least I’m not alone!😁
What carb is on yours?
I’ll give that a go too before I start pulling anything apart.
I’ve just driven it home and it’s definitely better that it was, but still playing up.
It’s a particular nightmare on hills! Just came up a short steep one and it really did not like trying to go up it. Of course you need to apply more gas which is exactly what causes the stumbling and farting problems!Mine is a 32/36, it seems to be on mine that when the second choke opens, it happens?

I was going to comment the other day, but it looked like you had fixed the issue so didn't feel necessary...
My Capri (1.6 pinto also) is doing exactly the same thing.
Runs like an absolute bag of shit until warm, and when warm, foot to the floor and it'll stumble/pop bang etc.
I haven't had much time to have a good look into it, but I did rebuild the carb and it also didn't help.
I expect you will probably fix it before I do, but I was erring on an air leak somewhere for mine.

I've always ran 80s cars daily, they are generally my preference for a nice balance between retro and still functional/semi reliable.
Pick something reliable to start with, can't really go wrong with an 80s Mercedes or Volvo.
What I will say though is regardless of what you pick, you need to be able to weld or plan on learning to...
Also helps to have a backup car (or multiple).
Despite owning/previously owning 60s/70s cars, I'd not fancy trying to run one daily.

Could I call first refusal if you eventually move the Jag on please 🙂?
To be honest I'm probably going to chuck it into the Morris Leslie auction and see what it makes when I'm done, hopefully with some profit to offset the fuel costs over the next couple of months.

Great choices in cars there!
Absolutely love the Capri (obviously!), is it Paris blue? Jag looks a beast too.Yep Paris blue, it's a keeper for sure - not sure about the XJ40 in that respect but it scratches an itch I've had.

That xj40 looks like a serious bargain for £1400! My old 3.6 Daimler version is still the best riding car I've ever had
Yeah when I went to see it I was expecting it to be a bit tatty/average but it's pristine and drives beautifully. The only broken thing is the cruise control which I think is pretty decent for one of these.
Also yes, I've never experienced something that floats along so well!

After a bit of a car buying hiatus, I've truly went above and beyond.
First is this 1986 Ford Capri 1.6 Laser.
I've always wanted a Capri and decided now was finally the time to get one.
It's in pretty good nick. Just need to get the bonnet painted but otherwise it doesn't really need much.
I was really torn between a V12 Jaguar XJS and the Capri but I definitely made the right choice.
Which brings me onto the next purchase.
With my 190D's impending MOT failure, I needed something to drive to work whilst I sort it out (rear suspension needs renewed entirely), so I was on the lookout for something cheap, reliable and economical.
I ticked the cheap box at £1400 but I veered significantly off course on the other two with this Jaguar XJ40 3.2S...
Really I think this was a bit of a bargain....

Gotta be honest if I couldn’t wake my wife up the last thing on my mind would be buying a Imp 😂
just love the randomness of “can I leave you a compressor as a deposit?”
what world do these people live in
The thing is, with the compressor he was expecting me to drop £200 off the final price as well 😅

I had a guy who agreed to buy my Imp and collect it on Saturday.
Most of it was on the phone, but I'll try to recount it.
The initial phone call was... interesting, 30 mins of talking about his hernias, Madmax films and other random shit; about 30 seconds talking about the car.
Saturday came and he asked me if I would take credit card as payment as his wife was paying for it, I said no, obviously. He then said he was transferring the money from the card into his bank account but it was taking ages so can he come tomorrow, I said cool, I'm going out anyway. He texts later to say "he's lifted cash for it now".
Sunday now, and he messages me when he was meant to come pick it up saying he can't wake his wife up which means she doesn't want to pay for it (thought he had "lifted cash"), can he leave a compressor as deposit and collect it next week.
I swiftly told him no and within a couple of hours someone else has agreed to come and collect it.
I really hate selling cars.

I'd suggest that you can diagnose if it's a fuel pump/needle valve issue, by getting it to a state where it won't start and then removing the top of the carb to see if there is actually any fuel in the float bowl.
This will likely save you chasing your tail a bit and rule that out if not.

I had a GT that ran rich and drank fuel. I changed most sensors (blue temp, lambda, tps) but never got to the bottom of it. It might sound strange but have you tried a different ecu?

Minimum speed and power required for a daily driver in 2024

My Mercedes 190D 2.5 allegedly has 77bhp per tonne, it's mostly too slow for overtakes on B roads unless overtaking a tractor.
Motorway driving it's fine and probably just meets the threshold for being a plausible daily.
I imagine the 2.0D auto would be grim though.
