brickwall reacted to jollyfkr2 in Bucket List Shite Acquired
I've always been a fan of odd shite and yesterday I acquired these!
So the first is a 1957 Stothert & Pitt 28" Vibrating Roller, complete and working apparently, not tried, to be honest it was so terrifyingly heavy just collecting it was traumatic!
The second is a 1976 Wheel Horse garden tractor with a 5hp Honda engine.
Yeah, I'm a bit mystified myself!

brickwall reacted to Tamworthbay in The about bloody time Capri resto thread - resto done! We are on the road!
As requested, it will be on the Bay tomorrow (unless an interested party gets back to me). I have sadly come to the realisation I will never finish it and need to cut down on projects. I inherited from my old man, it was his last project and he did most of the work that has been completed so far. I have done bits but he passed away twenty years ago so the realisation has come to me that I don’t want to pass it on to my daughter unfinished when I die. Sad thing is that Dad would have had it done in a couple of years but hey, what can you do?

Still making slow progress, I needed to move it to take pics of the AJS that’s going so it would have been rude not to do a bit.

in the world of madness that we live in an utterly hanging but complete and genuine pre 73 Range Rover might be worth two and half bags upwards.
so how much then for an incomplete pile of scrap, a 1980s 2 door wearing a Ringa J plate and two v5s?

best fucking laugh I had all week

Amazing parts bargain! For a mere £34 you can have a used genuine "prince of darkness" 7" sealed beam:
Or you could just buy a new one for the same money.

brickwall reacted to The_Equalizer in Any Land Rover series 2a owners on here?
Without being a bore I think there are at least four types of breather cap for the Series 2/3 Land Rovers. There are two types of the breather cap with pipe sticking out and I've found two without. In more detail:
1) Without breather pipe sticking out and marked in the Land Rover Series 3 parts manual as part number 247631 - I've included an image of the parts manual and there are a few for sale on eBay, like here:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Land-Rover-Rocker-Cover-Breather-Filter-S111-Land-Rover-Series-3-247631/302835708622?hash=item46826a32ce:g:fQgAAOSw~~Nbaifr
2) Without breather pipe there's also another number that comes up - 546440 - as in here:
http://www.lrseries.com/shop/product/listing/1206/546440-OIL-FILLER-CAP.html
3) With breather pipe (narrow pipe at 8mm in diameter) - part no. 596203 - see photo below;
4) With breather pipe ('standard' size breather pipe at 11mm in diameter) - part no. ERC2867 - see photo below.
Land Rover part no. 596203 and ERC2867 side-by-side.
Land Rover part no. 596203 and ERC2867 showing difference in breather pipe (8mm and 11m diameter respectively).
LR parts manuals showing supposed earlier Series 3 with 11mm diameter breather pipe, part no. ERC2867 (N.b. I have a late - 1981 - Series 3 with 5 bearing crank and it has this type of breather cap).
LR parts manuals showing supposed later Series 3 without breather pipe - part no. 247631:

No I just buy them when they are practically worthless, then first big expense like clutches or head gaskets, it gets weighed in. Works for me. Usually see a year or so out of them, net cost usually inc scrapping it is probably £500 a year.

brickwall reacted to N Dentressangle in 1992 Range Rover - the economy vehicle
Had an hour or two yesterday afternoon to start on the rear arches.
All wire brushed, hacked at with a screwdriver and Vactanned on the rusty bits:
With the Vactan dry, you can see a couple of holes in the metal of the body either side of the spring:
The one above the shocker is worst - I suspect some more digging around would make a nice little crater. It's soooo tempting to fill them with underseal, but I suppose I'd better get the welder out!

Well, not much to report for the past week because the Range Rover's been at the garage. I'm happy these days to farm out the jobs that need extensive crawling about on my back, and the car's been making a bloody awful howling noise ever since I got it. As soon as you got past about walking pace, seeming to come from the rear. In fact, it sounded as if something like this might be happening:
but my mechanic reckoned wheel bearing or diff were more likely than backseat wolves.
Wheel bearing was duly checked, found to be knackered and changed, but the howling persisted. Spare RR diff was found and fitted, and the wolves are now happily sleeping.
Here's the old diff:
Obviously you can't see from the pic, but the pinion for the planet gears had spun and worn the carrier to the extent there was a good 1-2mm play side to side in it. Result: scrap diff, especially as the teeth were starting to show wear too.
It now drives like an RR should, and you can hold a conversation in it at normal levels. God knows how the guy I bought it from put up with it - I think it's been howling away for a long time.
Next job now it's back in my garage is to clean out the back arches and underside, repair and Vactan where needed and put some more paint / underseal on the vulnerable bits, ie all of it.

Not having any kids of my own, I love spending time with my nephew - as I was explaining recently to one of the girls at work "you can get away with behaving like a kid again, no one bats an eyelid at a grown man running around pretending to be an aeroplane, riding on shopping trollies or making fart noises in a lift"
Have fun and enjoy being the fun uncle
Here's us learning* all about scottish history at historic Linlithgow palace
Next week, I shall teach him the game "bogies"

^ You need to adjust the tape-head height using a miniature screwdriver. Possibly accessible through the slot the tape goes in. Trial and error, could be fixed and totally transformed in about 2 minutes tho. Tiny screwdriver like one you'd use to fix spectacles with, or sometimes get out of a Christmas cracker.
Reminds me of 1988.

Listened to the carbs with a length of hose, they sound about the same to me. Will try to do valve timings soon. Here is the sound of noises:
I also fitted this quality NOS Unisef radio cassette courtesy of AS user Aston Martin:
I did eventually get the cassette player to play quite loudly through the left hand channel by repeatedly ejecting/replacing the tape... The right hand channel is still very quiet.
