Spending actual money on a car today.

Here in the work shop is a rusty, wheezy, shitty, badly made monkey's wank pot of a car, with a Sierra behind it. Look upon the Corsas as fluffers to the main act.

Speyside was pretty this morning, took the back road to see how the big beast handled a bit of weather...

Quattro is different to the Subaru AWD, bit less fluid somehow, but really bites into the snow under power.

I think you could have a lot of fun if you wanted, but at sensible speeds/throttle inputs it was rock solid.

Was good to find something these tyres are good at too, as they're pretty disappointing in all other respects (Pirelli P Zero winter jobs, no fault of theirs that they let go too easy in the summer!)
Screenwash pressure seems low, and it uses a lot as it does the headlamps every time as well, maybe a leak somewhere...  Otherwise all good.
    Cheers peeps.

Various coming's and goings last weekend, all of which have been mentioned in other threads (I think).  Firstly the Multipla departed to BorniteIdentity, followed 24 hours later by the C1 to Stephen01.  Who in return left me this delightful* French thing, shown here after a quick squirt of APC and a hosing down...

I'm not really sure what to do with it - use for a bit or just sell on so if anyone wants to help make my mind up please get in touch.  1.5DCi, MOT to June (although strangely vehicleenquiry.service shows it as lapsing this year, whereas check-mot.service shows it correctly), £30 tax, Clio alloys with matching tyres (one a bit worn on the edge).  I have a headlight bulb to replace (bumper off job) when it stops snowing and am waiting for a centre cap key to arrive early next week.  But it has the all important boot-chute, pointless sliding rear seat and an interior which will clean up respectably.  £400 as it stands (with the bulb replaced, obviously).
Finally, cars are meant to be used in all weathers, right?

Crikey, there's another blast from the past. The baffling saga of DXG 25K.

    AKA 'Two Maxis, One Reg'

Seems like a straightforward shed-grade blowover paint job has been carried out... except the blue car turned up on the eBay Tat thread back in 2009 - later snapped in the field by @dollywobbler in early 2011, as above - while the (heavily patina'd) Harvest Gold/Reynard Bronze one wearing the same registration number only showed up in 2017.
Tragically, I can't seem to turn up a pic of the foot-high MAXI lettering that had been applied to the back of the blue car.
Rupture in the space-time continuum, or some needless jiggery-pokery with VIN plates and V5s for the sake of a £300 nail?
    You choose.

Two days later and I have still not moved the Bentley! Maybe tomorrow....
This morning I spent on the phone, adding to the fleet! Not motorised this time, just another trailer, after all 8 is not enough! OK, I accept 3 car transporters may be a bit excessive, but they are all different sizes. The Ifor Williams is for the big stuff, the medium one is for towing behind a car rather than the Disco if the car to be moved is not too heavy and the third one is a custom build for the Sonett and is narrow enough to fit in a standard garage. Three are boat trailers complete with boats, one is a chassis awaiting conversion and one is a small box trailer awaiting work. So today I have agreed to buy a 3.5 tonne plant trailer for moving my plant around.
Today I had another little play with the digger, and I managed to not break anything so counting that as a win. Getting a bit better with it but it is going to take a while! I did work out how to operate the quick hitch though and managed to change the bucket. Progress. As the sun was shining I grabbed a few photos of the plant fleet:

The new trailer is down in the borders and as I still need to get the Disco up to full power for towing, I have booked it into a specialist next Monday in Sheffield (before anyone complains about travel rules, the Disco is essential to my business, I have tried local so called specialists and I have arranged socially distant accommodation whilst down there, an empty house) so will pick up the trailer on the way back.
So, I can offer shitely services for anything that will fit in a Disco between Aberdeen/Sheffield and Sheffield/Borders or anything that will fit in a Disco or trailer between the Border/Aberdeen. Southward journey will be Sunday or early hours Monday, return trip later in the week.

Yep, I think it was D701 SWL.
As I recall the tale, an individual joined the forum expressly to ask if anyone knew the fate of a Land Rover 110, D701 SWL, which had been bought new by their father as a gift for their mother.
    Tumbleweed ensued.
A short time later, another individual signed up to post because Google indicated that this oh-so-beige forum apparently contained the internet's sole reference to D701 SWL - the Land Rover their father had bought new, and which they were also trying to track down.
At this point, forum regulars took notice.
Frenzied speculation followed as to whether it was a case of mistaken identity, an elaborate if faintly pointless hoax, or something heartwarming involving long-lost siblings that you'd expect to find in Take A Break mag rather than being played out on a forum for rubbish old cars.
I don't think anyone ever did get to the bottom of the whole affair, but it ran and ran forever (unlike D701 SWL, which apparently last saw the road in 2011).
EDIT: From the AS Lexicon thread:
"D701 SWL -- Legendary Land Rover which can be claimed by anyone, to have been bought at any time in the past, present or future, by their relative of choice. For example: "I bought a Defender 110, reg. no. D701 SWL in two years' time, brand new, from the previous owner who was my dad, but he didn't actually own it because it was brand new. Or it will be, in 2 year's time. PHACT."

    finished off fitting the handbrake

there's a matching 'leather' cover for the gearstick, both came off the donner car

then test fitted my ebay cheapo number plate lights

in the dark - not sure if they will pass the iva, maybe I'll mount them above the plate facing down instead of at the ends

    Finishing off the bed
This bit has been onging throughout the build so a lot of the photos I've posted previously.
Throughout the thread you can see the sliding bases, the mattress cushions, and the hinges being created.  At this point it was just putting it all together which involved nothing more than a couple of wooden frames and attaching the mattress.
You can see here how the bed hinges work.  The middle (seat back) frames are lifted up and out by the offset.

The only thing left to do is attach the cushions - which are now reinforced with plywood bases and screw right on to the frames.
The rearmost cushion is fixed in place and doesn't move. This is where pillows and bedding are stored in transit.

The middle two cushions form the seat back, and the front one the base.

When the front seat base is slid forwards, the seat backs lower and connect together, forming a flat base.

Another closeup of the hinges. The pivot pins are just 6mm bolts, nyloc nuts and some washers as spacers.

So how well does it work? Well it's comfy, really comfy. Sometimes when parked on a hill you can feel like you're sliding off the seat a wee bit so I might angle the base a bit more.
The overhang is solid. It doesn't move a millimetre when you sit on it. No creaking either.
It sits lower than any other camper bed I've seen. The mattress frame rests right on top of the wheel arch. This way it feels like a sofa, not a high chair.
A small finishing touch - a skirting board added to the front to hide the metal.

    At some point, this happened.

It wasn't that long before the Doovla stopped issuing motorcaravan V5s, so I think I might frame that.
I think it's far enough along for a bit of a tour.

    What's left to be done?
    - ventilation
    - Some of the wood needs tidied up or finished better.  I still haven't completely finished the stain on the drawer fronts and they could do with a bit more sanding and lacquer.
    - The ceiling needs modified to match the rest of the conversion. I will probably stain it, and then I might change the brass light fittings for nickel ones.
    - The worktop under the stove is fine, but the section over the gas locker has warped and will either need redoing, or replacing with some different type of worktop throughout.
    - Bed base needs paint
    - Need to add some wood trim to cover the bed metal at the back.
Next job is installing the heater.

...and because obvs nobody really wants a car with a working engine, it came with two, neither of which actually operate in an engine stylee. He said something about the head gasket has gone on the 'main' engine...

Last year, when I took my Scomadi for an MOT I ended up buying a 750/4 chopper. This year, when I took my Scomadi for an MOT I bought that little 50cc scooter (further up) and, erm, another Scomadi...

If I'd had the choice at the time, my 200 would have been 'Atomic orange', it's defo the best colour they came in. This one is a 125 with a few extras (some of which might mysteriously find their way onto the 200) including an aftermarket exhaust, which won't fit the other one. The 'Adidas' decals will come off, but I've got some spare (plain) side panels in this colour in my garage somewhere. All of the TL models (50/125/200) had the same panels, so I suppose I could convert my other one from metallic grey to orange, but CBA.

Erm......took the Scomadi for an MOT (overdue but hadn't ridden it) and dropped one of the mopeds off at the same time. Talking to the garage owner and he mentioned an old scooter that'd been sat there for ages and the owner wasn't arsed about it any more. Got his number. dropped him a text, agreed a price and the rest, as they say, is history...

It must have been (very) loosely copied from a 1960's Vespa or something and I had to do an internet search to find exactly what it is. Transpired to be a 1999 Italjet Velocifero 50, which is 2T according to the internet. Tax ran out December 2006, no record of an MOT.

As it seems to be a bit scooter related recently, in other news my mate has kindly fixed my PX15. The centre stand was wobbly, fixed by tightening the bolts down on one side and adjusting the 'feet' and the lock set was knackered by muggins here, so a new set has been fitted.
In a fight for more room another project bike went, the RS125 was collected yesterday by the new owner's son.

As you’ll see from page 1 of this thread, I like Japanese cars - I like German cars and I like saloon cars. I really respect engineering integrity and most of all value longevity. This is the absolute antithesis of my usual fodder. And yet, I love it. I fucking love it. And the more you try to hate it, the more it impresses. The wife - who cares not one whit for cars - is smitten. It is completely beguiling, despite its faults.
    Because if it’s faults, actually.
It has mismatched tyre sizes. It’s constantly steaming up like a Chinese takeaway. The drivers seat seems to have permanently engaged lumbar support and it spent the day trying to convince me it was -13 degrees. The radio is fucked and only plays a distorted, monophonic Radio 1. But it’s just so willing. It drives like a car, pulls like a train and looks like an emoji 🚙.
I’ve already found myself looking for a really good one, but it might turn out that I’ve already got one. Fingers crossed.
