    So, we're officially a two-Toyota family now.

    February 2000 Corolla 1.3 Liftback.

One family owned since it was a year old, and they seemed truly sad to see it go.
A few giffer-dings here and there, but overall it's remarkably straight.

    Clean.

    Clean inside, too.

    Original ICE system, no less...

And 111,000 miles backed up by old MOTs.

I'd written a ton more but my post unfortunately got eaten, so I'll come back and elaborate later when I'm not on a mobile network.

It's maybe not exactly the car I want - but it could be the car I need right now.
    More later, cats and kittens!

Corrosion unusual on these as they are part galvanised.

Probably the sweet spot for the D5 before it gained omg Euro whatever complications. Should be bomb proof. Between myself and my colleague (you met him collecting the small scooter!) we've owned a fair few in estate and saloon guise.

This being the pre facelift it will have Renault electrics, post facelift gained a ford can-bus system which was much better - the Renault stuff can suffer from complete instrument cluster failure, but I *think* it was only the very early P2 cars that suffered. Certainly one of mine went and I had to have the cluster sent away and reworked.

I think my S60 D5 thread is still floating around here somewhere - I had some issues with a lift pump amongst other things. Ultimately everything on them is easily worked with and sensibly thought out. Possibly the last true Volvo.

Oh - turning circle is comically bad.

I remember taking my V70 to the same mechanic of choice to have the airbag light reset after having the clocks out. Total cost for his time with the Volvo diagnostic tool? "Nip over to the garage and get me 20 B&H while I do this"

Not quite up there in the excitement stakes, but there's been some movement this year (after a period of relative stability since 2018):
    Very much OUT:

Forester Turbo went from fine to dead in rather less time than hoped.
Rampant rot took out the front control arm, which CALAPSED while being manoeuvred down at the mechanic's. Further investigation revealed the underside to have spontaneously taken Colin Chapman's 'add lightness' dictum to unsustainable levels.
Never even had an MOT advisory for body corrosion before.
Couldn't be safely moved, and couldn't be sold privately from the garage premises due to 'unroadworthy vehicle' liability concerns, so ended up on the scrap wagon. Probably arriving in China about now.
    Also OUT:

Little 49cc Honda Vision - acquired gratis as a project from @They_all_do_that_sirin the summer of 2019, and to which I did very little beyond shoving it in the shed and very gently poking at it every few months. Now returned to its previous owner, who has much more of a clue what to do with it! I'm sure it enjoyed its extended holiday a mile down the road, nonetheless.
    IN:

What's increasingly becoming the Subaru of Many Shiters, featuring on this very thread for the fourth time in 2021 - yes, it's the ex- @TrabbieRonnie, ex- @Minimad5, ex- @SRi05, ex- @JimH Outback 2.5 SE.
Proving itself to be a comfortable and dependable steer, though sadly swapping the droplinks hasn't stopped the odd clonking from the front, so further investigation of the top struts may be needed before MOT time in February...
    NO CHANGE:

A non-mover for sixteen years now; yes, it's MrsDC's scratty yet apparently unkillable Mk1 Yaris.
Other than a frequently-running fan fault, similar to that being suffered by other shiters on their noble steeds, it just keeps on keepin' on.
I put a new battery on it last year after its last one perished from lack of use during Lockdown 1, but other than that has received very little in the way of TLC.
I think I might have washed it before the MOT in August.
I'm hoping that I'm not jumping the gun here, as I'm really not anticipating any other ins or outs in the next fortnight...

Dawned on me I never did update this post on here, so without further ado:

I've been putting some miles on it since I collected it, and have to say it's bloody good fun.

If it was down to me I'd have a louder pipe and a smaller plate pronto. But Mrs thinks it sounds fine as is. Shame as that OEM exhaust isn't pretty.....

I understand that, there is something a wee bit wrong about a parallel twin in a cruiser chassis.

My wife likes Harleys. But she's short and in the process of doing her big test so not very experienced beyond her 125.

The CMX on paper has similar performance as a Sportster 883, but is waaaay lighter and has a really low seat (did I mention she's a short arse).

It's A2 compliant so won't set the world on fire but it handles better than you'd expect, has Honda build quality and only really feels lacking when you try pushing it on a bit. It will do the ton if you really want it to but is much happier cruising.

The engine is the CBR500R lump but tuned for more low down torque. It doesn't really have much top end as a result, but feels reasonably torquey from low rpms

Amazingly, no there weren't - but here's a funny thing.
    (Sort of)
Earlier in the day, knowing that the test was miles from home and at tea-time, I'd bought myself a pack of coconut fingers from the Centra beside the motor factor that sold me the wipers and wheeltrims, just to save myself from Acute Starvation.
Which is no laughing matter, you'll agree.

I arrived over in Ards about half an hour before the test, and even though I was fairly peckish by that stage I declined to reach into my bag and start stuffing my gub - as I'd only just vacuumed the interior, and didn't want to get dessicated coconut all over the place.
After receiving the shocking news of the successful test, I pulled over outside the test centre to steady my nerves with a bun - only to find there were no coconut fingers anywhere in the vehicle.
Had... the tester lifted them from the back seat, assuming that they were a generous 'donation' to the Jubilee Road Vehicle Testing Centre's staff canteen?
Was this the underlying reason for my unexpected pass?
Was I now likely to get done for bribing a public official?
So many thoughts, so little sense.
Eventually, a message to MrsDC revealed that the pack of coconut fingers had not made it beyond the table in the hall. I'd left them behind.
So, no bun til I got home - but at least I can be sure* that the MOT pass was all above-board, and there was no funny business going on.
That said, I wasn't all that impressed to see a VW Fox leaving with a fresh MOT, as well as a completely flat rear tyre...
Almost a shame that MOTs are no longer compulsory on cars over 40 years of age, as it seems like a good time to put an MOT on your cherished* cla$$ic?

I'm equally shocked - as it's filthy with green algae but actually looks quite sound for an old Ford.
Currently taxed - but not MOT'd for eleven years?

There must be a story here - possibly some sort of training vehicle for apprentice testers?
I'm sure they receive a dozen offers a day for it from Ford nuts.

Thanks to @timolloyd for the head's up, but following it's appearance at the Late Brake Show live on Saturday, the Base gets a mention in today's Smith and Sniff podcast from around 37mins:
    https://shows.acast.com/smithandsniff/episodes/the-morning-after-the-live-show-before

I've exchanged a couple of Tweets with Mr Porter/Smith this afternoon who (rightly from a distance) thought it was a GLX because wheel trims.

I maintain this car because I like it, not because I want to be famous on Twitter, but mustard mitt stuff like that does make it more worthwhile.

It's the truth though. I've had a fair few moments on the bike where you've went from perfectly good tarmac to "Jesus I'm on ice!" With absolutely no warning whatsoever so you learn to expect the unexpected - crap surface, spilt diesel, loose chippings. All things in a car might give you a subtle twitch but can stick a biker in hospital.

A local lad hit a railway sleeper that fell off a lorry on a dual carriageway here at the start of summer. He's not long out of hospital and his bike was written off. Had he been in the car? Yes the car might be a wreck but he wouldn't

If you have local knowledge you can mitigate - for example there is a roundabout near me that's notorious for diesel spills. I have a once lovely pair of spendy RST boots that are scuffed to buggery as a result of almost having a massive off. I lost the front end and just managed to stay upright using my boots as additional contact points. Not intentionally either, my feet were off the pegs and dragging the road as a result of being in the middle of an accident.

It's more noticeable on a bike given how much more direct feel you are experiencing from the tyres compared to a car.

On a bike the biggest factor in having an off or not (beyond how you are riding) is 110% tyres. Especially in wet weather. Bikes do expect a bit more from a tyre than a car granted.
