Ah there all the other side!

If anyone is interested the Capri is plodding along, it's now running with a new Weber carb fitted, the brakes are currently being gone though, rebuilt the calipers, fitted new pads etc, had a mare with thr new hoses as they are a different thread to the originals and managed to strip the thread whilst doing up the nut 🤦‍♂️
Also bashed the bumpers straight again and repainted them today, quite pleased with how good they came out

Still not looking forwards to sorting that shit strut plate out

A friend came good with a pair of headrests for £20

Because priorities I got a dealer sticker of DMB on the back and have a new front plate on order from Retro Plates

So finish brakes, fit bumpers, paint alloys, fit new tyres and it should be close to the road again!

After Sunday's shite in the park we went to see a BX I'd enquired about over the weekend. I didn't end up buying it but Ged did and I drove it back to the unit.
It seems to go well enough although I was scared to drive it too hard as it had been off the road for a while and fuel gauge was either at zero or inoperative.
It goes up and down fine too.
It's had a wee bump on the rear corner but damage looks superficial.

    Rare spot today…

    2.3 supercharged one… gorgeously understated.
Sadly bar a fair few miles in the 9000 on family duties that was all the car action in my weekend. Frustrating as I’d really hoped to get a couple of hours to finally finish the 2CV revival ready for an MoT, drain the Nova’s tank and investigate the Pontiac’s misfire.

Was well chuffed with this wild spot this afternoon. It's MOTed to June next year and is on 220k.

The handbrake did zilch and the pedal felt a little low.
Mr weigh mentioned a very expensive repair bill that got the handbrake working for about 2 weeks or so last MOT.  So i hoped for a mistake and simple fix.
    Boots off

Wheels and drums off revealed new ish discs and pads up front and new shoes at the rear.
    However.
Nearside wheel hub. The self adjuster had fallen down and was rubbing on the rear flange.  Theres ya problem!

The offside adjust has bits lost from it so it wont self adjust. A lip on the outter of the drum means the shoes were set wrong so they could get the drums back on. both adjusters have been cleaned up and manually adjusted the lips removed from the drums aswell so we now have a lovely handbrake and good pedal feel.

Great to see the Carlton now running - was it just that leaky pipe that needed sorting in the end?  I reckon it would have gone last time but I stopped when I could smell stale petrol!  Hopefully the smoke will clear once it's been run for a bit, unless it has other issues.   It's a smart old thing, dents aside, and deserves to go again.

So by way of update… it ran….. for a while.. then shat itself. Fuel system had deteriorated and began to perish quite badly. Transpires a couple of flushes didn’t cut it… continually gumming and blocking up the injectors. Entire fuel system swapped out with new hoses and fittings throughout, and replacement injectors fitted.
few other tweaks aside, and a small amount of welding, wheels and tyres, brakes, and a few bits and bobs… and having not actually been on the road since 1998… it passed its MOT.

Further to that it’s been used competitively on a clubman rally (lent it to a motoring journalist to do his first budget entry airfield rally) only for the chap to get a third in class!
    result!

Anyone on the beige pages who knows me.... knows that I’m a sucker for small French competition cars...... so..
I found myself a little 1992 106 XSi. Original paint and virtually pin straight.  However it’s got a welded up sunroof needing attention. Converted to hillclimb-sprint car in ‘96, and last used in ‘04. Been in storage for 18 years. Original Northern Ireland registered car with me now being the second officially recorded owner.

Took deposits for the good Oltcit and Fox last night. Downsizing is actually happening!
Naturally mixed emotions, but in truth, I had far too many cars, most of which were going nowhere. Now I can focus on core fleet members, especially the 2CV (needs an engine rebuild) and Invacar (total sympathetic restoration).
Burnt Oltcit will be picked over for spares by the owner of the good one, but is then FOC to anyone who can make use of it.
In other news, hoping to finally gave the Charade up and driving today. It has been far too long - rather indicative of how little tinkering time I have these days.

    More done today.
Mostly cleaning the interior this time. The seats are fine, being new material, but the dash and most other bits of trim were filthy and looking dull from years of storage so I’ve cleaned it all down with some trim cleaner and a cloth. Incredible how much crap came off on the cloth! It looked grubby but it was far dustier than I thought. Then did a few coats of black cockpit shine and buffed up with a microfibre cloth. Looks absolutely fantastic now!

It’ll most probably need a few more goes over with the shine as some of the plastic had gone very dull. But it’s not been cleaned or polished in years.
Spent ages over the last few days sorting the door and tailgate seals too. They’re all new and are making shutting the doors/tailgate extremely difficult. The rubber is so stiff and thick it’s stopping things closing properly. Managed with the doors, although I think it’ll improve with time once the new seals soften and take the shape of the closed doors. But the tailgate is not having it! I think I need to loosen the hinge bolts and slide the tailgate up a touch as I think the seal is hitting in the wrong place on the underside of the tailgate.
Also finished cleaning and shining up the replacement footwell kick panels. They’re looking great now and just need fitting. I’ve also wax injected the A pillars and inside of the door hinge areas so now just need to fit the kick panels over them.
And, I had a great find recently!
I’ve been thinking about the steering wheel recently. Been keeping an eye out for a better one - couldn’t find anything much of an improvement over mine so thought about getting the leather wrap on mine retrimmed.
Then a really nice one turned up on eBay so I bagged it!
Heres my original. These are different to normal mk2 steering wheels. Mine being an early car they carried on using up stocks of mk1 wheels. Which look way nicer too imho.

And here’s the one I got off eBay.

It’s in absolutely lovely condition. The soft trim is all perfect and the plastic is all really good. I think it’s actually off a higher trim car than mine as it’s got a soft padded centre section whereas on my old one it’s hard plastic. All it needed was a quick wash and some cockpit shine buffing on and it looks a million times better than my old one.

Its got a really pleasant smell too! That old musty car smell with a slight hint of old tobacco! Or rather it did, until I cleaned it.
Anyway, almost there now. Just a few bits to finish then time to hit the queens highway. (It’ll probably be kings highway by the time I get it done!!) Main thing stopping me driving it now is the tailgate not latching down.

I've done about 200 miles in this and it's been great. I took it to Southport and back (100 miles) and it was fine. There's a random clacking that sometimes happens when it's coming to a stop with the clutch down, it never does it in drive. I can feel it through the transfer box lever more, but no idea where it's coming from really. It stopped when I engaged locking hubs on the front wheels and when for a blast down Thurstaton beach on Friday - but eventually comes back. It doesn't sound terminal and I thought it was the spring on the handbrake mechanism catching on something on the TB?

New headlights arrived, new wiring arrives in a bit.  I'm not up to much today, off sick at the moment (nothing serious, happily) but I needed to get some movement and fresh air so decided to have a look at these headlights and how they fit.  They're a straight swap.  Wiring aside, you literally take the old headlight bowl out and fit the new one in exactly the same way.  Could not be easier.

You can see the bubbling the silvering on the old bowls here, they're both like it for most of the bottom half which is hardly ideal.

Chose domed lenses rather than flat ones so the shape would be correct, I really dislike the look of flat lenses on classics, especially when it's in the teardrop shaped headlights like these.  The sidelight bulb sits in the bottom in line with the headlamp clamp and there's so much room inside the headlight bucket that wiring those up isn't going to be an issue.

If you know what you're looking for you can tell the difference between old (on the left) and new (on the right).  To the casual observer they look totally normal, only the H4 branding and the lens pattern really gives the game away from normal viewing distance.  It's a pretty stealthy upgrade really.
