  1. Anybody had any experience of Autoaid breakdown cover.

    http://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk

    http://autoshite.com/topic/21983-no-mate-no-idea-what-wrong-with-it-can-you-just-tow-me-home/

They came well recommended here. When I spoke to them on the phone, the bloke was dead helpful and cleared up my couple of low level points of concern.

I haven't had to use them yet, but hard to argue with £41 to cover the MGF and X1/9. They wouldn't touch the Galaxie thought, to old and too American for them. fair enough, I thought

  2. Hey an opportunity to pour scorn on something, excellent! Here we go!

I'd like to drive one of my sub-£400 (or even sub-£200) cars to the Czech Republic as it looks like an interesting place with nice architecture and good beer, though I wouldn't go on a charity rally as I would want to kill everybody involved. I'd just go in one of my normal reliable cars and be a nice English tourist in a smart blazer. Nothing wacky would happen at all and I'd be pretty surprised if anything went wrong mechanically either.

Basically I'm of the opinion that unless you're a bit useless at buying stuff, £400 would almost certainly get you a car that would drive there and back with no grief and that if you want to explore Europe there's absolutely nothing to stop you from doing that without having to stick a load of crap on your car and say you're doing it for charity. People seem to get it into their heads that it'll be a load of fun driving this car that knackers up everywhere but I suspect the reality is either that it does the trip without any drama whatsoever or develops a major problem which can't realistically be fixed or bodged at the side of the road, leaving you in a position where you have to get it looked at in a foreign garage and possibly wait several days for a part that's on back order, resulting in you having to dump the car and sit in the back of somebody else's for the rest of the trip. In any case I think if a car has real problems you're unlikely to get it as far as driving it out of the country and if it can sit on a motorway here without overheating or pissing all its oil or coolant everywhere, it's likely to stay like that.

    In summary:

Well, the Lada 1200 from Hungary, Moskvich Aleko from Lithuania and Fiat 126 from Poland in my area all seemed to manage it the other way no bother - so yes, I imagine very easily.

totally agree. Additionly, I have often wondered what would happen if I just followed them, without entering. At what point would they get the arse with me for spoiling stuff?

Yeah.  Bollocks to the organised rallies - let's do our own thing.  Tour of European chod museums, mountain passes/bridges/tunnels/viaducts, and other stuff simply because it's there?

    I'm in.

Me too. I would happily drive the F to wherever we opt for.

You know, you all might have an idea for 2016. Why not an Autoshite European tour? The AS calendar could cope with Shitefest AND this surely? All done the smallest budget to include as many who could afford to take a car and maybe discounted seats available in cars to those who couldn't. Take in a few motoring museums along the way. Could be good.

How about a trip to the old Paul Ricard track? Can we get a go on that one? I have fond memories of playing Chequred Flag on my ZX Spectrum, you see

  3. Andy Murray? At least it wasn't mr fury.

Jess Ennis Hill only excels at 7 different sports so I can understand why she was back in 3rd.

    Tyson who?

ah heavy weight pugilist tyson fury,

still he was daft/brave/stupid enough to get into the ring with that klitcho fella from the Ukraine.

There is a certain irony that Fury was the only one on the list with a personality, and yet it is possibly the worse personality ever.

Still, at least it wasn't Hamilton that won it. F1 is utter tedium

  4. DRLs and bright headlights are two different things. If I turn my headlights on, my DRLs drop to 5W bulbs and become sidelights. Plus, the safety aspect is not other drivers really.... It's people stepping out into the road, or kids, or cyclists. Especially when the big trend is for every other car to be painted in a shade similar to wet tarmac, I'm going to stand by my opinion that they're a good thing. Seriously can't understand why you'd make your car less visible on purpose.

And I promise this is not a dig at anyone, I agree that headlights are getting brighter, but there are vision issues that manifest themselves as heightened sensitivity to spots of light. If it's so bad you feel you can't drive at night, Specsavers do a pretty comprehensive vision test including retinal scans for free. That's not me saying "OMG you must be blind, get over it" but it could be a more serious problem.

I've reported this vile & unnecessary post to the moderators. Your logic, reason & factual accuracy have no place here.

  5. As above my vitesse is in for its MOT.

It has not been on the road for years and the brakes are binding.

I must admit I feel sick. I am hoping that it's not a bad failure but will keep you guys posted

I was like that last Friday, as I put the X1/9 in for it's first test in three years. I'm sure it will be fine

  6. 4 months should be no issue. Lots of good advice above.

IMHO: take it for a decent run (at least 20 miles) on a dry day. Park it up in neutral (Park for autos) with handbrake off if parked on the flat then switch it off. Don't keep starting it up, you'll fill the exhaust with condensation and the oil won't get hot.

Make sure its clean before you stop using it, wipe off any bird crap it attracts.

Take the battery indoors to charge it or, even better, connect a smart charger to it.

Put some extra air in the tyres to stop then flat-spotting.

If it gets damp inside open the doors on a dry day to air it out.

In the spring: check tyres and fluids, drive.

combine this with pillocks advice, mate.

  7. No question, it’s the Maxi. But I would make a few tasteful modifications.

Jack it up and cut out the floor. Run a full cds tube space-frame through it, with mounts for a 350ci Small block chevy & 350 autobox. Narrowed 8†axle on coilovers and ladder bars out back and Mustang II front IFS. Paint it in standard Maxi beige and smoke about like there is no tomorrow

  8. I too have just stumbled on this thread, top bombing sir.

Pray tell, where did you get that Arnold Clark autoshite sticker. Being such a popular (reviled) dealer up in Scotland, where every 2nd car has one in the rear window, Id love one for my car

The late, great Barry Shitpeas sold it to me for a very reasonable sum. Since his death in a freak yachting accident, I believe that Wilson Wilson is now selling them.

If he can't help PM me, I might have a spare one

  9. Couple of interesting points there, gents, thanks to all.

For clarity, I was talking about the MGF, which is on a estimated 15k miles per annum policy. RAC insurance didn't ask me the mileage for that car/policy.

On the X1/9, I have an estimated 6000 miles per annum, and they DID ask me the mileage, along with a photo to prove it.

But, if I read the above answer's correctly, in both cases, those cars are insured for me to drive those total/estimated distances. If President Barrack Obama comes to stay, and he asks for a cabby in either of my cars, his mileage is to be deducted from my annual totals? Have I got that right?

  10. Top motor, that.

An F is an itch I need to scratch at some point. I have the money, its just that I'd need a new wife.

beer money sports cars, mate, get one bought. I know I'm biased but I really struggle to criticise it.

  11. I thought that but the MoT & the insurance dates don't match.

Edit to add, the MoT  history will show the mileage between MoTs, but the car has been MoT'd for 7months before the insurance was taken out.

  12. It's honestly really difficult, banning is a last resort but trust me there were numerous complaints about him and he just seemed to dig his heels in. I suspect I knew he was cheesing people off and the more he was baited, the worse he got.

No objection to his ban, he was a proper zipsniffer and no mistake.

I don't envy the staff on forums in the slightest,BTW.
