I think I have been watching the same thing but its on Pornhub. The plotline is not that difficult to pick up TBH.

You'll need a 52 mm socket for the RR (assuming it's a 'proper' one) as you have to remove the hubs to change the discs. Which VW? I've only worked on 90s Polos and Golfs which were straightforward enough, the only tool you may not have is a 7 mm allen key. The way I look at it, nobody's born with the knowledge to do this so we're all just gaining experience on the way. Some start earlier, but there's no reason not to try (so long as you don't start both jobs on a Sunday afternoon without any other working vehicles...)

Brush + metallic is not a good combination, the bristles stroke the glitter directionally too obviously.  With flat paints it's not an issue.  For metallics you're best spraying, even rollers will give a more obvious direction to the finish.

Celly all the way for this.  Acrylic is more prone to sags and runs, takes longer to dry, doesn't build up a decent thickness without running more and more risk of saggy paint and is a far softer finish when you've finally completed the job.  Celly is much more forgiving (but not on your respiratory system, obvs.) and a better result can be got easier with it in my experience.  Celly can also be cheaper.

    I wouldn't bother with 2 pack.

Little bit more progress on this recently, as I picked up a free battery at the weekend which makes moving it a lot easier if I don't have to give it a jump start every time. Time to straighten the B pillar:

It took a few tugs in different places to get it reasonably straight, but I was impressed with the pulling power! Next job passenger door...

Seconded for Martrim. They did an absolutely first class job of re-trimming the cushions in the van. We were going to replace the foam as well, and prepared to buy it from them but on their suggestion we kept the existing stuff. Any business who does themselves out of a sale if not really needed gets a thumbs up in my book!

Can't believe I've missed this since the initial post! Will be watching with interest. All I'll add about the mention of Galvafroid is that Zinga on paper at least seems a better bet.

I've used them both for around 5 years and as yet nothing to choose between them for rust resistance. But I've gone for Zinga ever since.

I confess that I cheated with the controls, and found a ready-made lead:
    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141021626502

Arrived today, and with the aid of the Smart Key app I can customise the button presses to suit my requirements. Plus I can take the lead and use it in the van too, as although the head unit in that has a USB connection, folder navigation is a pain so easier to use the phone's music player.

I went along to the XM/AS meet at Cosford at the weekend, and all went well. The plugs seemed a bit on the white side when I had a look at them prior to the run, so I'm wondering if it's running slightly weak. Although, on the way back it was noticeably more powerful as the temperature dropped, which would suggest the less dense hot air coming from the exhaust manifolds is an issue. To be resolved... But I really do feel like I'm living the (admittedly fairly modest) dream

And in other news I have my 5 minutes of fame!

I'd emailed Practical Performance Car with the idea that they might put a paragraph and photo in Reader's Cars. But they liked the story enough to run a full feature!

Cheers, I'd have to say that my repairs are probably best described as functional though! In my favour though, are the facts that it's mostly hidden, distortion shouldn't be an issue and it looks (ha!) to be pretty localised. Biggest worry is damaging the one-off windscreen with grinding or welding sparks, so utmost care will be taken!

I'll probably not be using it much over the winter, so plan to tackle the bodywork at leisure and eventually get it resprayed in the original silver. Doing it in bite size chunks, without it being in pieces for ages I think will be the key - as it's all too easy (for me at least) to lose motivation on a bigger job. Still wondering about trying the respray myself...I think I could get a finish I'd be happy with (i.e not perfect) but not sure how durable it'd be compared to a pro job?

Had another play with this again this weekend.

The new battery arrived. I decided to go for the biggest, good quality battery I could find instead of being a cheapskate like with the previous battery. Hooked it up and it fired up straight away.
Checked the charge and all is good, at last! It's on the button now and runs beautifully!

So the next job was the cooling system.
I drained the old coolant, refilled with plain water and a can of cooling system flush and left it running for half an hour.
It was drained down again, the water had some crap in it but it looked pretty good. It was flushed through with plain water a couple more times just to get as much of the old crud etc out as possible before being refilled with new coolant.

While it was running I let it get as warm as possible and put it into gear but sat there with it in D and foot brake holding it still. It doesn't appear to be cutting out anymore, and the revs seem to stay strong so hopefully that annoying problem is over now.

It seems to of turned a corner now after a lot of time and new parts. So far all the evidence I've found points to the last time it saw the road being almost 20 years ago, in 1995! The dealer I got it from did some recommissioning to get it running again but clearly it needed more! It's to be expected really that things that have sat unused for so long will start to fail when made to work again.
The plan now is to get some miles on it and see what happens. There's also a few little bits of paintwork that will need sorting. But it seems to be going well so far.

Agreed. I would very much prefer that this goes to only the more regular posters and 'known faces' on here, but I shall leave that up to the discretion of the Shiters who take it on as I think most of us have at least a modicum of common sense. If anyone does kill it then they shall not be collecting their £120 and we shall set the Scottish Volvo Massive on them. Then they'll be sorry.

I realise that there is a risk with this scheme, but realistically my only other choice is to sell it for about £250 and then never ever see it again and I don't want that as despite its low value, I really like this car and how much fun it is. I would much rather that other Autoshiters have fun with it in my absence then it just head off to some randomer and I never get the chance to drive it again.

Oh I so wish I could take the credit for this however.........I was in Selco with my dad buying a load of materials when out of the corner of my eye I saw a number of lintels similar profile to the cross members on the Shifter. So I ended up buying two of them (you can see the one that hasn't been cut in the background with insulation inside it) and a number of measurements and cuts later, it matches the original perfectly

Good luck with your gutter repair.  As someone commented, it looks a bit tricky, though seeing what you have already repaired, well within your obvious ability.

They have had those self-order terminals here in France for quite a while now and IMO they are a massively good idea. I go reasonably regularly and know exactly what I want, so if the drive-through is too busy I can go inside and hit one of these terminals. They have a dedicated pick-up point so you completely bypass the queues of folk gawping slack-jawed at the menu above the counter and trying to ask their 5 kids what they want. I get my slop served up straight away and am out the door back to the car before the urge to kill everyone gets too strong. I never eat in the place, I always go back to the car and find a quiet spot to park up and eat in peace.

I reckon within 5 years the whole restaurant will be automated with just a couple of human supervisors checking on it and feeding the ingredients into the machines.

It is a truth universally accepted that the number of vehicles one possesses shall exceed the covered space in which they can live by at least a number of two.

Anyone who says they have enough space to keep their vehicles under cover at all times is either lying - and therefore a cad and a bounder and not to be trusted - or has not yet spent enough money on obtaining the optimum number of inoperable vehicles.
