  1.

I am amazed that lane 1 is always empty

Particularly on the M-ways with 4 lanes. On quiet-ish journeys I often find I'm the only one in it so I just plonk myself at 70 so atleast I'm making progress, but I've also got a decent view ahead whilst all the others are bunched up in lane 3 or 4. Then when you come across the inevitable dawdler doing 55 in lane 2, pull out and join the throng in lane 3, pull back in and then ahhhh enjoy the lane 1 view again!

  2. Nah, sorry. There's no fun to be had in the London area. That's why I cycle everywhere these days and only take the car out as an absolute last resort if I really really have no other option. Sad but true.

I agree with you there, although I stopped cycling to work for the same reason, too many a holes trying to kill you.

If you get the A303 on a good day it's still a great road to travel, and you've got a nice destination at the end of it :)

  3. I find tailgaters are often using you to do their driving for them, as when given the opportunity to overtake they just stay plonked behind. I've tried replicating what they do by sitting up the chuff of someone else, but I physically couldn't do it as it went against my natural instinct of looking around/behind/ahead. All I was doing was staring totally at the car in front. I suppose that's why you get rear end shunts as their attention goes for a split second and, wallop.

I get a fair few of them when I'm driving the Montego, which being beige is probably seen as being driven by an old duffer. But I often out accelerate modern, bloated lumps on dual carriageways just for the fun of it, being a 2.0EFi pre-cat it makes good progress. Tailgating in urban areas is something I have more of a problem with as I'll do 35 max, even if it's late at night on a wide street. I tend to just pull over nowadays if they really start to piss me off, it's not worth the stress.

  4.

am I nuts for thinking of driving an ultra rare gallic barge at all in the winter? the previous owner told me that he just doesn't go out at all if it even rains, let alone salted roads.... I'm not talking about a daily but maybe drive it to work once a week for a treat.

Go for it, definitely. Sailing along in that on a cold, clear day in winter will make a day spent at work more bearable. And it'll probably benefit from a bit of light, but regular usage over the winter months.

  5. Mk3 Granadas allowed you to use the electric windows when you had switched the car off until you opened the drivers door. Which was great if lil Jonny had left the window down in the back.

Same with my Montego. Only found this out today after a year of going "oh bugger I've left the window open" and putting the ignition key back in.

  6.

The original plan was to have the 604 sorted and useable for Chodmongly in May. Now it's for the NEC in November, maybe... The Escort is now taking priority over the 604, hence I'm not gonna keep the Pug.

On a stand or in the car park? If it's the latter I'll keep an eye out for it as I'm 99% going this year, probably the Saturday.

  7. This could be simply because people don't tend to keep possessions on their driveway (the Onslows of this world excepted). Garages tend to be full of extra crap these days, which can fall on/against the car, or making getting a car into your garage a tricky job - all of which increase the risk of a claim.

I'm surprised anybody much garages their cars now in any case - you're probably seen as some sort of weirdo if you do.

That's why garages get broken into, not to nick a car but to nick bikes, steroes, tools, or whatever other crap people keep in them. It happended to me a couple of months ago and they took bikes and some other stuff that I was temporarily storing in there. Despite all the hassle the scrotes did me a favour actually as I got a tidy sum from the insurance, and it means I now have room for the Monty :)

In the flats where I live it's mostly the old duffers who keep their cars in the garages, one of which has a gold 1982 Datsun Cherry with not a speck of rust on it. Chatted to him the other day and he's a proper gent, similar to old Mr Ingram.

  8. Was a new Clio so not a big car by any means.

Have you seen the size of the new Clio's? They must be as wide as a Sierra? I am on my phone and am sure someone will check the statement?

Not confining it but cars are to big for old garages now?

 Ridiculous isn't it, but she was still a dozy mare for doing it. What gets me with garages is the often inadequate area allowed for sweeping the car around into the correct position. My Montego fits the garage no problem but I have to be bloody specific in the manouvre to get it lined up properly, opposite locking all the way. And when people park opposite your garage making it impossible to get in - boils my piss that does.

  9. If we were approaching spring/summer and not autumn I'd suggest being bold and use the 604 as a daily for a while, with one of the others in the wings as backup.

It is good to have a clear out though, go on flog the lot bar the most useful and start building up a collection again.

  10. Saab 900 classic is my main one. Everytime I start to think 'oh, I'll get one of those next' I get the taste for something else instead. Are they really worth trying though? What puts me off a bit is the interior, a bit uninspiring IMO.

Volvo 240, Rover 600 (623 GSi would be nice), Rover 400 Tourer, Rover 75, Rover 800/Sterling Mark 1 (soon to fill this gap hopefully), Dolomite, Rover SD1 V8, Sierra (must be Ghia spec with the pepperpots), Vauxhall Omega, and a Hillman Imp.

I've never even sat in an Audi, new or old, and I'm quite happy to keep it that way. Strange but I'm totally not bovvered by them.

  11. FFS! That's probably caused because fuckwits buy cars that are too fat for their garage and then claim for their ham-fistedness on their insurance.

Absolutely. Seen a woman here pulling out of her garage and steering sharp left before even half the car had cleared the door frame  Made me wince hearing the rear quarter panel being mashed up. Was a new Clio so not a big car by any means.

That be my miniMetro! And me standing next to it looking like a dork in my floppy hat, Peterborough last year I think.

My Oyster beige Montego. Didn't buy it for it's beigeness though, bought it because it was cheap :)

  13. Seeing a Lotus Carlton in last night's rush hour! Was worthy of a massive double-take as I couldn't believe it, and I'm certain it wasn't just a Carlton GSi either. Looked like it was being used as a daily too as it didn't appear to be a cosseted example, with bird shit down one side and heavy deposits of brake dust on the wheels.

  14. I've voted Sandglow as they look tops in that colour. As much as I like Applejack (yes please to a miniMetro in Applejack!) I think that colour only suits the later Allegros IMO.

  15. I struggled to sell a £350 Volvo 740 recently with 8 months MoT, and it was RR where I had the buyer (I think I was lucky though, right place right time etc.). I know they're not worth a lot but that's bargain basement motoring, and the lad was using it as a van substitute.

Anyway, aside from that my excuse for not buying this DW is I'm so far away. I can't bear using public transport for the length of time it'd take me to train it to Wales!

  16. Fixed the floppy wiper on my Montego by tightening up the mechanism, easy quick fix. Then I decided to have a go at changing the rotor arm which I've been putting off for ages as it just won't budge off the camshaft. Took someone elses advice and started to hack saw the old one off, but in my vigour I've managed to saw through into the shaft itself. What an arse  And it's still not off. This on top of me having a stinking cold so I've been sneezing and dribbling snot all over the engine bay! I've come in for a break and a cuppa before I totally wreck it...

New rotor arm is now on, now the bugger won't start. I'm pretty sure the leads are on the dizzy cap in the correct order but it just turns over and doesn't fire up. Is it likely I've just got a duff rotor arm (Intermotor) or something more sinister? Any advice much appreciated before I set fire to it.

Edit: And no, I don't have a socket small enough :)

  18. GEM Motoring Assist for me and they are fine, have used them twice so far in 2 years. Bit cheaper than RAC too but if you're canny you might be able to find a cash back offer on RAC via Quidco. Wouldn't bother with AA anymore, been with them before and they were shite.

And with GEM you get a quarterly magazine, but not sure it can be classed as a selling point - the letters pages are full of why-oh-why rants from your average Daily Mail reader which always make me

  19. Oooh nice interior, those seats look to be very comfy for the old derrière :) The leather looks in reasonable nick too, just needs a good feed I suppose.

I like the handy cubby hole by the throttle pedal where you've kept your oil top up bottle, neat detail.
