Also, while I'm complaining.... our MoT station went "live" on the new improved web 2.0 computer system.

    1. They gave us less than 24 hours notice, so I had to use my laptop for tests today.
    2. I'm spending my evening prepping another computer so I don't have to do that again.
    3. It's a total mess. Buggy, wierd and makes you print documents via a PDF that it generates.
    4. No more VT40 information sheet. All the vehicle info is on the computer screen instead, and nowhere to write brake results or failures.
    5. My AE is not tech literate at all. He sends emails by tying the laptop to a pigeon and hoping.

This week is going to be SUCH FUN.

Autofive - Haha, I did warn you! Not only did you do a deal with kermit the frog* you bought a 106....

I recently bought a late 106 1.5D because a friend of a neighbour asked me to find a small cheap car to replace the greek registered 106 the police told her she had to stop driving. TWO WEEKS of faffing and thinking about it, brought friends/relatives to have a look, asked stupid questions (it's a £200 small diesel with a valid MoT ffs) and then went and bought a rover 200 somewhere else for £800.

    Total waste of time.

Scorpio spare is usually a different size to the rest because the boot floor pressing is a mk3 granada and the 16" wheels don't fit in the hole. Ford solution - 15x6J spare that puts the ABS light on when you use it...

Never heard of diamondback - our current "cheapest one please" make is the amusingly named "MOHAWK". I'm waiting for them all to come back bald at the sides....

Also, it's the only one still in production by the original manufacturer, probably in the same shed.

Emissions is another good one, for example, de-catting a 91 onwards car isn't an automatic fail. If the car passes the emission test it is a pass, cat or not. (It is unlikely however that a de-catted car could meet the cat test limits)

Also, which test is applied depends on both the age of the car, and the age of the engine, you test according to which is older. This means that a 1968 car with a 1998 engine gets a visual check only where the same engine in its original car would need a cat test. It also means that you could fit a 1500 bmc diesel smoke machine to a 2005 bmw and get visual check only emissions, as long as you have proof of the engine's age to show the tester.

All Q plated cars are tested as though their year of manufacture was 1971. This means that a stolen recovered 98 vectra diesel doesn't need rear seat belts, or hazard lights, fog lights. side repeaters, can have a multi tone horn and white on black numberplates and will only get a visual emission check.

Grinworthy for this week is the long awaited return to the road of my Volkswagen LT35, possibly the world's shitest recovery truck. At 22 years old it is neither new nor classic, the LT avoids all scene tax by being huge and square, attracts road tax at £240 per year and the non turbo 2.4 six cyl diesel makes it both slow and thirsty. Being a 3.5 tonner weighing 2 tonnes empty, I can't carry modern cars on it - even a fiesta is too heavy now. The brakes are marginal, the shock absorbers stopped absorbing shocks about a decade ago, the gearchange is so sloppy you have to slam the lever into the dashboard to get reverse, the blower motor doesn't blow and most of the rest of the electrics are best described as "intermittant". Despite all of this it passed a MoT yesterday, and I love it to bits.

Oh, completely not LEZ. Barely passed the emmission test! It did get a run through london a couple of years back, which was fun.
I did! The Gail Tilsley's tits episode traumatized me so badly I didn't even look here for ages. It seems much better now!

Sadly, that's about weight. 5.9 puts you in the private HGV classes, which haven't been put up for ages. 3.5 makes mine PLG and it goes up every year. I can't even put a crane on the back and avoid the MoT!
