Could you pop back to the Triumph owner and ask why he wanted to put black and white plates on a car that would never have had them in the first place and then went and ordered them in a font that didn't exist on b/w plates anyway. I'm confused.

^^^ Yeah, i did look a while ago but couldn't find anything within reasonable distance. A friend struck lucky with an old barn in Hitchin. He pays £260 a month and I reckon that would hold six cars. It's fairly dilapidated though...birds get in and shit everywhere. He keeps the odd motor up there but mainly spare parts.....one of my Tagoras lurks under a cover nearby!!

You can still buy a Merc A Class with windy rear windows.
 
I think they should bring back neat centre wheel caps instead of those minging dinner plate monstrosities they use nowadays. Either metal or plastic...I don't mind.

The disappointed seller of a late 1970s saloon car has revealed today that despite it's being advertised on a well-known classic car website for several weeks, he received no communication or interest whatsoever from one of Britains top pop acts, The Cheeky Girls.

The shocking revelation, that has left both the pop and classic car world stunned, comes just days after it was revealed that a former neighbour of  'Birds Of A Feather' star Lesley Joseph once scrapped an uneconomical to repair  Riley 4/72 in the early eighties, and has fuelled fears that many of our top paid entertainers have a complete disregard for the classic car movement in the UK.

The car was meticulously kept by its one and only owner for 33 years, with a comprehensive record of expenditure, until it went into storage in 2004 after being restored to a high standard two years previously. Looking through the history file that came with the car, shows the rapid deterioration in the first few years probably due to the appalling build quality these Dublin built Hunters had.

The 1725 cc engine is nippy and the non power steering much lighter than my Alpine and Solara. The 4 speed box is nice and notchy with a precise feel.

 
 
I'm not sure what Chrysler were thinking when they added this garish rear panel from '74 onwards, but I do like it! You can also just see the original mudflaps which had a 'Hillman' script across them, now sadly faded.
 

 
The vinyl roof has surprisingly survived well since being replaced in 1985!
 

 
For me, it is the interior of the car that is so fantastic. The original Charcoal/Red multiweave seats are excellent...they were also standard fitment on '77 model Avenger GLS and weirdly, the last Simca 1000s.
 

 
 
The dash is incredibly dated for a late seventies car with wood veneer a-plenty and deeply recessed dials. The left hand dial has fuel and temperature guage and volt meter. No radio I'm afraid, but you can see the 'afterthought' hazard warning switch just under the dash.

So there you have it. I had a Chrysler Hunter 1978 model about 15 years ago and always regretted selling it, particularly as it was scrapped not long after. I'm pleased as punch with this one.
 
It's funny to think that the Hunter was launched the same year as the Mk2 Cortina yet here it is still being made 13 years later, barely changed. I can only think that the last few were sold ridiculously cheap as fleet cars to companies like Tupperware and can just imagine the salesman looking forward to his new company car and the look of horror as a wheezing old Hunter gets unloaded into the car park! Today the car looks really great with similarities in style  to the Mk 2 Cortina 1600E...I think!
 
The 1725 cc engine is nippy and the non power steering much lighter than my Alpine and Solara. The 4 speed box is nice and notchy with a precise feel.

 
 
I'm not sure what Chrysler were thinking when they added this garish rear panel from '74 onwards, but I do like it! You can also just see the original mudflaps which had a 'Hillman' script across them, now sadly faded.
 

 
The vinyl roof has surprisingly survived well since being replaced in 1985!
 

 
For me, it is the interior of the car that is so fantastic. The original Charcoal/Red multiweave seats are excellent...they were also standard fitment on '77 model Avenger GLS and weirdly, the last Simca 1000s.
 

 
 
The dash is incredibly dated for a late seventies car with wood veneer a-plenty and deeply recessed dials. The left hand dial has fuel and temperature guage and volt meter. No radio I'm afraid, but you can see the 'afterthought' hazard warning switch just under the dash.
 

 
You may think it's a lovely bit of walnut capping on the doors...but cheap fablon only I'm afraid.

So there you have it. I had a Chrysler Hunter 1978 model about 15 years ago and always regretted selling it, particularly as it was scrapped not long after. I'm pleased as punch with this one.
 
It's funny to think that the Hunter was launched the same year as the Mk2 Cortina yet here it is still being made 13 years later, barely changed. I can only think that the last few were sold ridiculously cheap as fleet cars to companies like Tupperware and can just imagine the salesman looking forward to his new company car and the look of horror as a wheezing old Hunter gets unloaded into the car park! Tee! Hee!

The disappointed seller of a late 1970s saloon car has revealed today that despite it's being advertised on a well-known classic car website for several weeks, he received no communication or interest whatsoever from one of Britains top pop acts, The Cheeky Girls.
 

Cheeky Girls say 'No' to classic car ownership
 
The shocking revelation, that has left both the pop and classic car world stunned, comes just days after it was revealed that a former neighbour of  'Birds Of A Feather' star Lesley Joseph once scrapped an uneconomical to repair  Riley 4/72 in the early eighties, and has fuelled fears that many of our top paid entertainers have a complete disregard for the classic car movement in the UK.
 
A source close to the Cheeky Girls, who had a string of chart toppers in the early noughties with "Bum My Cheeks" and "Hooray! Hooray! It's A Cheeky H-reg Proton" has confirmed that due to an extended summer season at Butlins in Minehead and a general disinterest in classic cars, it was unlikely the duo had ever seen the advert. 
 
A spokesman for the classic car movement, Lord Greville Plumworthy speaking to reporters earlier, expressed his disappointment in the girls, claiming it to be a 'kick in the teeth' for all those who endeavour to keep Britains motoring heritage alive.
 
However, in a happy ending to the story, it can be revealed that Hertfordshire resident 'boobydoo' has come to the rescue and recently added the car to his fleet.
 
The car in question is a 1979 registered Chrysler Hunter Super, thought to be the only '79 model still in existence, this being the final year of production. Extensive research by the new owner, involving looking in a mag,  has shown that  only 1,176 Hunters were registered in the UK that year.
 
'boobydoo' liked the smart look of the car in it's original Cherry Red with vinyl roof, Rostyle wheels and later Humber Sceptre style grille.
 

 
The car was meticulously kept by its one and only owner for 33 years, with a comprehensive record of expenditure, until it went into storage in 2004 after being restored to a high standard two years previously. Looking through the history file that came with the car, shows the rapid deterioration in the first few years probably due to the appalling build quality these Dublin built Hunters had. 
 
Here are just a few in addition to routine service and maintenance:

Well, some of you may have realised that this year is the 30th Anniversary of the Talbot Tagora, 1981-2011!
 
So what better way to celebrate, than a little jaunt across the Channel in such a vehicle...back to the Motherland as it were!!
 
Unfortunately my scottish cohort had to cry off last minute due to work commitments, but as everything was booked I decided to venture solo!
The Tagora had had brand new discs and pads a couple of weeks ago and seemed to be running well...so hopefully I would get there and back in one piece.....but I took out RAC Europe Cover just in case! Only £29 for three days, so not too bad.
 
It was an early start on Friday to catch the 10:25 ferry from Dover-Calais ...but even at 6:30 am, the M25 was chocca, particularly at the Dartford Crossing!

 
After a brief stop at Maidstone Services (where the bogs were a bloody disgrace!), I arrived safely at Dover...Stage One of the journey completed!

 
A hotel had been booked at Orleans...about a 5 hour journey ... so plenty of time to enjoy the baking hot sunshine and wonderfully smooth French roads!
Here I am on a bleak stretch just outside of Chartres....though my crap photo doesn't show the bleakness at all!!

 
I followed this beauty for a fair few kilometers !!

 
I did notice how the French don't seem to look after their old cars at all! Look at this sorry bunch!!
 
This AX looks particularly unloved n'est-ce-pas?

In good old Blighty, a 2 door Sierra would be a rare sight indeed and I think better cared for than this!

 
Here I am, Friday night, parked at the hotel...just time to relax with a couple of beers... wondering what excitement would lay in store the next day....... ?

And very nice it was too......but wait a minute! What was this I could see from one of the Chateau balconies.....way across the lake??

 
Did my eyes deceive me or was that a.....? Quickly, I focused my camera zoom!! ZOIKS!!!

 
Yes indeed! 'Twas the 30th running of the French Simca Club National Meeting! This year in Ferte-St-Aubin, 15 km south of Orleans! The whole reason for my trip!! Follow me!! This way!!

 
The Simca 1000 is 50 this year! The French love it...just as we do the Mini!




 
ARF!! Here's a sight you wouldn't see every day if you lived in, say, Barnsley!! A Simca 1100 with two fun-lovin' doggies!!

 
A lot of the Frenchies had dressed up for the day...here are two 'jeune filles' one dressed like Brigitte Bardot and the other in....err...what looks like a PVC dress ....with a lovely Simca Oceane!

 
Ooh! Here they are again, this time in 1980s gear!! Looks like life's a blast in a Talbot Samba!

The one in the leather was their mother....believe me, the rear view was better!!!!
 
Even the old folk made an effort.....here's a classy Simca Chambord!

 
Anyway...lets have some tat!!

I chatted in pigeon French to the owner for a while....he had owned it for 6 years and had restored the bodywork himself. The red interior was beautiful and all original! But I forgot to take a photo of the inside.
 
Now, what's next? Ah yes, a 'tres jolie' Simca 1200S!

The first Simcas were built under licence from FIAT in 1934...here's an early Simca 5.

 
By now the baking heat was starting to make me flag a little...but then I saw this and perked up again!!

 
Now, this car was possibly my favourite! 140,000kms yet looked brand new! The car was restored 5 years ago, but the interior was original and unmarked. It was simply superb!! The owner, M.Genette Laurent, lived on the South Coast of France and I have promised to post him a UK Solara brochure! He deserves it, don't you think!!

....and I'm pleased to report that the Tagora behaved impeccably over the 700 mile round trip!!! It's now all clean again and tucked up in the garage ready for another adventure another day!!

It was an early start on Friday to catch the 10:25 ferry from Dover-Calais ...but even at 6:30 am, the M25 was chocca, particularly at the Dartford Crossing!

 
After a brief stop at Maidstone Services (where the bogs were a bloody disgrace!), I arrived safely at Dover...Stage One of the journey completed!

 
A hotel had been booked at Orleans...about a 5 hour journey ... so plenty of time to enjoy the baking hot sunshine and wonderfully smooth French roads!
Here I am on a bleak stretch just outside of Chartres....though my crap photo doesn't show the bleakness at all!!

 
I followed this beauty for a fair few kilometers !!

 
I did notice how the French don't seem to look after their old cars at all! Look at this sorry bunch!!

The Simca 1000 is 50 this year! The French love it...just as we do the Mini!

A lot of the Frenchies had dressed up for the day...here are two 'jeune filles' one dressed like Brigitte Bardot and the other in....err...what looks like a PVC dress ....with a lovely Simca Oceane!

 
Ooh! Here they are again, this time in 1980s gear!! Looks like life's a blast in a Talbot Samba!

The one in the leather was their mother....believe me, the rear view was better!!!!

If you go down to the woods today......you might see a beige Chrysler 160GT!!!

I chatted in pigeon French to the owner for a while....he had owned it for 6 years and had restored the bodywork himself. The red interior was beautiful and all original! But I forgot to take a photo of the inside.
 
Now, what's next? Ah yes, a 'tres jolie' Simca 1200S!

By now the baking heat was starting to make me flag a little...but then I saw this and perked up again!!

 
Now, this car was possibly my favourite! 140,000kms yet looked brand new! The car was restored 5 years ago, but the interior was original and unmarked. It was simply superb!! The owner, M.Genette Laurent, lived on the South Coast of France and I have promised to post him a UK Solara brochure! He deserves it, don't you think!!

....and I'm pleased to report that the Tagora behaved impeccably over the 700 mile round trip!!! It's now all clean again and tucked up in the garage ready for another adventure another day!!

Well, some of you may have realised that this year is the 30th Anniversary of the Talbot Tagora, 1981-2011!
 
So what better way to celebrate, than a little jaunt across the Channel in such a vehicle...back to the Motherland as it were!!
 
Unfortunately my scottish cohort had to cry off last minute due to work commitments, but as everything was booked I decided to venture solo!
The Tagora had had brand new discs and pads a couple of weeks ago and seemed to be running well...so hopefully I would get there and back in one piece.....but I took out RAC Europe Cover just in case! Only £29 for three days, so not too bad.

A lot of the Frenchies had dressed up for the day...here are two 'jeune filles' one dressed like Brigitte Bardot and the other in....err...what looks like a PVC dress ....with a lovely Simca Oceane!

 
Ooh! Here they are again, this time in 1980s gear!! Looks like life's a blast in a Talbot Samba!

The one in the leather was their mother....believe me, the rear view was better!!!!
 
Even the old folk made an effort.....here's a classy Simca Chambord!

 
Anyway...lets have some tat!!
Simca Horizon 'S'...we didn't get an 'S' over here! Rather nice, I think.

If you go down to the woods today......you might see a beige Chrysler 160GT!!!

I chatted in pigeon French to the owner for a while....he had owned it for 6 years and had restored the bodywork himself. The red interior was beautiful and all original! But I forgot to take a photo of the inside.
 
Now, what's next? Ah yes, a 'tres jolie' Simca 1200S!

The first Simcas were built under licence from FIAT in 1934...here's an early Simca 5.

 
By now the baking heat was starting to make me flag a little...but then I saw this and perked up again!!

 
Now, this car was possibly my favourite! 140,000kms yet looked brand new! The car was restored 5 years ago, but the interior was original and unmarked. It was simply superb!! The owner, M.Genette Laurent, lived on the South Coast of France and I have promised to post him a UK Solara brochure! He deserves it, don't you think!!

This one has been restored by two English guys, Guy and Stuart from Kent, who were also there! It was a £150 wreck.....haven't they done a great job!!

The owner of the blue one liked my car so much, he gave me an original TALBOT keyring, which was very kind!!
In the end only 6 Tagoras turned up. Not many for a birthday do!!

Anyway, as I'm getting a bit bored downloading all these pics, I shall leave you with a 'pot-pourri' of other french fancies that made the trip very enjoyable!
 
I got home safely on Sunday despite torrential rain in both France and UK...

....and I'm pleased to report that the Tagora behaved impeccably over the 700 mile round trip!!! It's now all clean again and tucked up in the garage ready for another adventure another day!!

LE FIN.

Well, some of you may have realised that this year is the 30th Anniversary of the Talbot Tagora, 1981-2011!
 
So what better way to celebrate, than a little jaunt across the Channel in such a vehicle...back to the Motherland as it were!!
 
Unfortunately my scottish cohort had to cry off last minute due to work commitments, but as everything was booked I decided to venture solo!
The Tagora had had brand new discs and pads a couple of weeks ago and seemed to be running well...so hopefully I would get there and back in one piece.....but I took out RAC Europe Cover just in case! Only £29 for three days, so not too bad.
 
It was an early start on Friday to catch the 10:25 ferry from Dover-Calais ...but even at 6:30 am, the M25 was chocca, particularly at the Dartford Crossing!

 
After a brief stop at Maidstone Services (where the bogs were a bloody disgrace!), I arrived safely at Dover...Stage One of the journey completed!

 
A hotel had been booked at Orleans...about a 5 hour journey ... so plenty of time to enjoy the baking hot sunshine and wonderfully smooth French roads!
Here I am on a bleak stretch just outside of Chartres....though my crap photo doesn't show the bleakness at all!!

 
I followed this beauty for a fair few kilometers !!

 
I did notice how the French don't seem to look after their old cars at all! Look at this sorry bunch!!
 
This AX looks particularly unloved n'est-ce-pas?

 
Cack-ridden beige 21!

 
In good old Blighty, a 2 door Sierra would be a rare sight indeed and I think better cared for than this!

 
Here I am, Friday night, parked at the hotel...just time to relax with a couple of beers... wondering what excitement would lay in store the next day....... ?

 
 
SATURDAY: A French Chateau!

 
And very nice it was too......but wait a minute! What was this I could see from one of the Chateau balconies.....way across the lake??

 
Did my eyes deceive me or was that a.....? Quickly, I focused my camera zoom!! ZOIKS!!!

 
Yes indeed! 'Twas the 30th running of the French Simca Club National Meeting! This year in Ferte-St-Aubin, 15 km south of Orleans! The whole reason for my trip!! Follow me!! This way!!

 
The Simca 1000 is 50 this year! The French love it...just as we do the Mini!
