Much, much Ailsa love from over here. When I had my VR I used to go drinking with the chap with the WMPTE one (now he has two ish). He'd not long bought it ad was still red. Many a thrash around the country was made in it to collect parts or visit Black Prince, the legendary Leeds Ailsa operator.

Did a drag race with it against the VR. Up to 15 the VR was quicker but when the Ailsa got into its stride, it left me for dust. Legend has it that when WMPTE were still running theirs, one of them (4746 to be exact) achieved 66mph on road test one night. Screaming legends, they were.

First Glasgow did have some similarly ancient Ailsas in service at about the same time but they were still a bit "Live fast, die young" even then.

A combination of CDs and Radio 4 may not be perfect, but it'll solve that problem. I don't believe I've ever heard any of Pharrell (sp?) Williams' music.

Agreed...put your foot on the brakes with the engine off and does it go down when you start it? Check the free 'n easy things first A 205 shouldn't need uprated brakes to exceed the limit of the tyres, so IMO it's just a case of fixing rather than upgrading.

Start with the basics, pads - check for glazing. Rear brakes adjusted properly? (Then again I'd probably expect a long pedal travel to show up badly or non adjusting rear brakes) Then move to fluid. A good flush through can work wonders. Wooden feel to the brakes? Check the vacuum pump and associated hoses for a good suck. Other than that they are on an older car so you can't really expect miracles but they should stop well though. My bet is glazed/cheap pads/discs.

My guess is Packard. I remember doing the head gasket on the Patrick collections straight eight Packard. Side valve but still a bloody ungainly and heavy lump to deal with!

Thank you. Sadly I am indeed very old.

I should add that the starter motor may be borked because he cranked it the last half mile home. Worked fine the last time used etc, the enormous strain effectively melts the internals. Hope not ( but I have done that myself!)

Welcomed to the crowded south. Tis only when you leave that you realise how grim it is down sarf!!

That one sounds marginal. I reckon you'll have a borked head but I doubt the engine seized, prob just dry & stiff. I expect a full charge, lightly lubed bores and maybe an initial ratchet spin on the crank &it'll turn over ok. 3/4 of a tank says he didn't see it coming, and the obvious desire to get it home means that it's unlikely he was more than a dozen miles away. Wet internally, in all the wrong places, it's then just sat, mouldering for several months (guess) whilst he pondered his options. Stiff, partial seizure but with the head off i'd wager it's saveable.

I'd say that the engine is the deal breaker here. Musty interior, prob limited service history & those dents/bonnet issues must make it a borderline save?

But who am I to comment? Luck mate, I do hope you won't be needing it!

By the way, were still in need of a venue for the next one. Any takers (i.e do you need a number of middle aged blokes to come round, drink your tea and possibly accidentally fix things?)

Front blow out at 50mph in a double deck bus. A little poo came out.
Tyre managed to wrap itself around the brake chamber. Took the poor tyre fitter an hour and a half with a saw to free the tyre enough to release the wheel. That was after spending an hour trying to jack the thing up as the front axle beam ended up touching the tarmac.

    Two down one to go.

For added shite points this particular coach has been rollered battleship grey over the weekend (and over the previous fleetnames) and has an extra shite 7-speed "comfort shift" manual 'box, complete with stubby Volvo 240 style gear lever attached to the cab seat.

I didn't get much chance to work on it at the weekend, as Friday evening was spent over on Anglesey for part of the 2CV 24 hour race weekend, Saturday at Chester races (where I had a big cash payout...into double figures!!! (just)), then Sunday at Cholmodoley.

Late on Friday afternoon I popped round to my local garage which I'm getting to know a little better now. They let me use their press, and declined any offer of payment - although not the bottles of beer I dropped round later.

I then trimmed the shaft flush with the pulley hub, and gave it a quick coat of paint. After I got back yesterday I managed to swap the pump over, and am quite pleased with the alignment.

I've yet to fill with water though, and I need to get a shorter belt seeing as the pulley is smaller in diameter. Hopefully will be able to run it this afternoon though.
