  1. Today's crappy job was to replace the rubber pipe that connects the filler tube to the gas tank on the Plymouth as it leaks. The previous owner had seen fit to install the jubillee clips with the screw head facing up! I didn't want to drop the tank so had to use a bare hacksaw blade to cut the jubillee clips off. I could only manage a 1 inch stroke so it took ages.

Waiting for the mail man to arrive with the new rubber connector and new clips.

  2. Fugget, found this in my tire this morning. Took it to the local tire place and they can't repair it cos the hole is too big, the tread is at the wear indicators and there's also a razor blade in the side wall. New tire is $190. Grrr

  3. Following on from my post in the grump thread yesterday, plans have changed and I'm no longer planning to evacuate from NE Florida. Irma's predicted path i ys now further west. This is the first grin albeit non car related. There's still a mandatory evacuation starting tomorrow but they won't physically make you leave. I live on a barrier island and the police are expecting to close the bridges when the wind gets strong enough

Spent the day putting up the hurricane shutters (not grin worthy)and clearing space in the garage for the convertible and getting my generator running. The carb was all clogged up with crap but soon cleaned it out. These last two are why this is grin.

Feels a bit like a prison inside the house and the hurricane doesn't get here till Sunday night/Monday morning.

  4. F**ksticks, looks like they're going to issue a mandatory evacuation in North East florida starting Saturday morning. Gonna try and get the convertible in the garage before I have to leave but space is at a premium.

  5. Got the 2 new freeze plugs installed this weekend. The brass one on the right took about an hour to get seated correctly. Using a combination of a 1 1/4" socket, a 1 1/8" socket, 2 x 6" 1/4" extension bars and club hammer I managed to drive it home. The expandable one on the left was popped in place in under 5 minutes using a 7/8" wrench and a 1/2" socket.

I haven't filled it with water yet so I don't know if they leak, that will wait til next weekend

  6. So I've started on changing out the rotten freeze plugs. Managed to remove the rubber engine mount and then set about beating out plug. It wasn't easy finding the correct angle and long enough screwdriver but eventually I got there. Not sure how I'm going to get the new one in as the motor mount bracket is right in the way.

I need to drive the plug in square, I wonder if this hole lines up? That would be sweet if of it does.

  7. My 1950 Plymouth would originally have had a lever like this under the dash. Pulling on it operated a band style brake on the driveshaft.

However when the previous owner swapped in the Ford 8" rear end mated to a Chrysler driveshaft the original stuff was all taken out. Unfortunately no new handbrake lever was reinstalled, the cables are all there, wrapped around the frame but they don't connect to anything.

  8. Been away for a while as not been working on cars as too many house projects needed attention. Anyway I'm back trying to stop the transmission leak from the Plymouth, new Speedo seals, new nss and another new shift seal on the hope I can stop it. I need to get out sorted and get an alignment as I may have to sell it and the Dart. My friend may soon be selling her 76(?) corvette, orange with a chocolate brown interior.

Here it is next to my Dart convertible
