Well the front two tyres were worn on the edges, which was an mot advisory and the rears weren't holding air so I decided to go completely off-script in Autoshite terms and signed up for FOUR  MATCHING BRAND NEW TYRES FROM A MAJOR HIGH STREET CHAIN.

It was booked in at 17:00 on a Friday.
    FORESHADDOWING.
I collected it, checked nothing and drove home.

When I got most of the way home I thought I'd better stop and check the wheel nuts were actually tight. They were, but I noticed that there was no valves on the tyres. Well, there were valves, but they were trapped behind the wheel trims, which are the type that bold on with the wheel bolts.
    GR8.
The wheel trims were not fitted correctly because they'd put a balance weight where the trim clip has to engage if you want the cut out for the valve to be where the valve is.
But it was 1700 o clock on a Friday so theyd just rotated the trims 45 degrees, trapped the valves and rattlegunned the nuts to 19000 newton meters, hi fived each other and gone to the pub.
    Me:

    Tyres are good though.

Me creeping back from the toilet on the train trying to look inconspicuous because I made an awful monstrosity and the flush wouldn't work so I just piled all the toilet roll on top of it and left a short note of apologies for the next user.

After a bit of doom scrolling and ruling out anything parked on gravel, parked on grass, parked with a caravan or dog in the background, being sold by someone also selling 9 to 27 other cars, any seller with a flag as their profile pic and any car with a pic of the key in the ignition that clearly still has an auction tag still attached, I found something that raised my spirits.

Flipping beautiful morning. Camped out last night. Sheep licked half of the muck off the side of my van as I slept.

Soft mask - use wide tape and roll the edge of the masking tape back under on itself to make a like a "loop". The paint will then have a nice soft feathered edge over the space of a few MM. It makes a much less noticeable repair, and with a bit of compounding it'll blend in even better.
The guy in the video here is folding it fairly tight, but if you leave the fold very wide (10mm+) it gives an even softer edge

Was showing my partner's Dad the compilation video of Rufford Ford yesterday.  It's the one where the first fifteen or so vehicles are black BMWs.

Is this a rite of passage for BMW owners that I'm not familiar with?
    Seems like you got lucky!

I spent half my Sunday (yesterday) stripping flaking paint and underseal and preparing surface corrosion for undersealing and painting. I used a circular wire brush attachment fixed to the end of a drill, which made the process a lot easier and a LOT more messy. Good news is that I did not uncover anything nasty. I didn't take any photographs as you have all seen the affected areas before.
The idea was to paint over the underside and low level exposed areas with the matched blue Rust-Oleum paint. I painted a bottom corner of a door and this morning, once the paint had dried, I found it to be a completely different  shade of blue.

I then sprayed over the same patch with the matched aerosol and...

Just about a perfect match. Not bad for a colour that is a bitch to match.
I popped back to the paint shop today, showed the man who mixed the paint for me the above photos and he added some grey and yellow to the mix, to make the colour brighter. When I got home, I applied some of the newly mixed paint and it looks a better match but I won't know how much better until the paint dries. The plan is to use the brush on stuff for the areas that aren't so visible and use the aerosol to repair the damaged paint higher up along the flanks, then cut and polish the lot.
In other news, I received a switch blanking plate from @wesacosa (thank you!) to replace the front fog light switch that has no right to exist in an L spec Sierra.

    More soon.
