Lankytim got a reaction from djim in Wtf is going on with car insurance prices?
I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before (and CBA to check) but if you set your browser to incognito mode compare the market or whoever you’re getting quotes from think you’re a brand new customer rather than someone trying to get a cheaper quote multiple times a day. They tend to load the quotes if they think you’re getting desperate.
“of course I wasn’t looking at porn dear, I was trying to get car insurance, honest”
Best time to get a quote is 28 days before renewal apparently. The closer you are to renewal the more desperate they assume you must be.

Bought a new toy and polished the car. Before and after door pics. Not bad for a first attempt.

Thank you for the warm welcome and thanks to everyone who liked my post. Good to see there’s still other folk as well that like the 800. If I lived in the UK I’d be glad to pop over and help sort the electrics, but I’m across the channel (Netherlands), so a bit difficult. Hence I try and help online where I can, time permitting.
And yes, I’m the same one with same username. Keeps things simple
I’ll try to follow the thread and if there’s anything you need, don’t hesitate to ask. My responses won’t be very quick usually as I’ve got a busy job. Takes a lot of care to keep driving an 827 daily (as I do), hence my understanding regarding your earlier point in throwing this project aside Still hoping you can find the time to patch it up at least and sell it on to another owner that cherishes this car as well (or maybe complete the project, who knows).
I know you can get it working again 👍
PS: responses might be delayed due to I’m new and mods need to approve posts.

Me 'usband was a player, 'e was shagging at 83
it wouldn't be a problem, but that was 2 doors up from me
so we bought ourselves a Transit, to get away from 'ome
an' camped up in a car park, to quell 'is testosterone
I asked the bugger nicely to get the washin' out on peg
but 2 minutes after this photo, 'e whipped out 'is middle leg !
So in a fit of rage, an' to dampen 'is desire
I threw all of 'is bongo mags out onto the old camp fire
That shut the randy bastard up alright, an' put a stop to 'is cheap thrill
now 'e's sitting by the kettle with a face like a week in Rhyl
I'll put some bromide in 'is tea to stop 'is 'ands from roamin'
an' shove that Thermos up 'is arse if 'e don't stop 'is moanin'
The next day was much better, 'e put 'is trousers on for me
but I need to put some jam on 'is shoes, an' invite the bastards down for tea
The bucket under the table is filled with sponges and bog roll, of course
'
...coz when 'e goes out for 'is ablutions, 'e pisses like an 'orse

A few months ago I replaced the main upper engine mount on the Laguna as the vibration was getting excessive. It took a while to track down the source of the issue but on inspection the oil filled mount had collapsed as wasn’t really damping anything. A new aftermarket one was ordered but failed again after a week or so! I was refunded by the vendor but only got around to replacing the mount this week. A used OEM mount was sourced on eBay and finally fitted last night. I haven’t taken it for a test drive yet but the car is making much less noise on the driveway and the wiper arms aren’t dancing around anymore!
I cut the old (new) mount open and found the damping oil had escaped and was sitting at the bottom. New Renault mounts cost approx £130 and this one was £50 so maybe that explains it!

Just a note to say that my dad passed away this morning. He is at peace now. I will miss him terribly.

That's the way we've done it with the Volvo 950. A custom loom which we made ourselves plus an Emerald ECU in place of the Volvo one. It takes time and you need to be methodical but it works well.

A custom cut down loom with a version of the ECU without an immobiliser is the usual state of affairs. Not all cars are common enough on the track for racers to have figured out how to wire them up though.

I got into an online argument with someone who claimed to own one of these O series carb versions. I was absolutely sure they never existed. Years later I found out I was very wrong.

The Fusion has been parked up for 2 years or so, it’s been a “spare” car but was never needed. I decided to get it MOTd and either sell or keep it for myself as it’s sat there basically rotting away. It’s been in the family since it was a few years old so it will be a bit of a wrench to get rid of it.
After a quick wash and check of tyre pressures it was delivered to the MOT garage. The test showed up front brakes, to be expected I guess. The bulb was slightly annoying as I swear it all all working the evening before! I had the bits needed at at home so an hour of tinker time and a retest was scheduled and pass issued. Result! It’ll probably end up parked up for another two years. We’ll see what happens.. it’s at least ready to use.
Can anyone identify the reason for the slight mark on the lower wishbone? Only level 10 or above shiters will recognise it’s origins.

Finally found time to replace a corroded fuel pipe on the 145 today. A few months ago I removed the tank to clean and repair it and disturbed some of the existing steel pipe work near the rear axle. As this was corroded it immediately sprang a leak. Very annoying.
The corroded section was removed and a length of rubber fuel pipe clamped in to replace it. After priming the fuel system the 145 sprang into life first turn of the key and settled down to a nice idle.
I nearly gassed myself but I suppose that just adds to the giddy delirium you get when you finally fix something shite related!

Lankytim reacted to Austin-Rover in Rover 820 - Scrap car, back on the road! (Update; 16/01/24)
The 800 has been in daily use for a month-and-a-bit now and it has not been without issues - none of which took it off the road though, so there's something positive.
Problem #1 was the discovery that the sunroof tray was letting water in to the cabin. The driver's footwell was wet as was the top corner of the headlining. Dropping the headlining down showed the metal stub that the drain tube attaches to it rotten. I've effected a repair which was to stuff a grommet in to the drain hole, and avoid parking the car facing down hill. Success! This is one to investigate further in the warmer months. For now, crisis averted.
Problem #2 is the actuator for the boot release which now does half a job. Press the release button and the boot opens, but the arm on the actuator does not return and you can't shut the boot. A bit of head scratching and poking round in the boot lid with a screwdriver found the problem, and I can push the actuator's arm back in with the tip of the screwdriver. Thankfully the boot can be opened and closed without problem if you open it with the key. Of course new parts are unobtainable. I found a NOS Rover part on the internet, but had my money refunded today as they don't actually have the part in stock.
Problem #3 was the n/s/r wheel bearing which went out to lunch over New Year. New bearings are cheap enough on eBay and come with two nuts to allow fitment to either side. Earlier this week I parcelled the car up and sent it to the garage. Later that same day, the news was that someone had been here before and totally trashed the bearing carrier through their unfamiliarity with left-hand threads. Guess what... parts are unobtainable! Amazingly someone in Dewsbury had recently stripped a car and had the required part on their shelf! It was cleaned up, a new bearing pressed in and we're back on the road!
All being well, we'll be at the Rustival with it at the start of March.
