Next up is this Simca, some window unit warp, and missing aerial. I hoped to resolve the latter issue with an aftermarket one from 3MJA.fr - but I looked at it funny and it snapped virtually instantly , won't buy from there again (not like there are many Norev part suppliers!). Still, happy with the car.

They really are amazingly accurate for the scale, it's easy to see why railway enthusiasts use them on their displays.

I've found myself collecting more of the later 70s Superfast stuff lately too.  Not on purpose, they just seemed to always be in joblots and they're never really worth anything.  I suspect that will change in a few years, especially for really nice examples.  Here's a couple of my favourites I've bagged so far, got to love a bit of wedge action.

This poor old thing is now waiting for fresh paint now that I've chiselled the gloopy red mess off it.  I'll be redoing it in a metallic blue, I've got an idea for this one I want to experiment with that's a variation on the original colours.

Catalogued under Stupid Ideas, I'm going to restore this because I can. As soon as I get something that can donate the proper rear wheels this one will be up and running again.  It's not actually as bad as it looks.

The other-other thing I'm interested in collecting are the Rolamatics cars because they're a neat bit of mechanical engineering and fun to take apart to see how they work.  I've not got many of these and the two Fandangos I've got are good examples of most Rolamatics in that one looks totally trashed and the other is in surprisingly good shape.

I never pay very much for these, mostly because I can't.  I like picking up completely ruined examples and bringing them back to life and I do play with them on my desk from time to time because why grow up?

I'm just working on my 2nd Victor as it happens. This latest one has a tow hook like yours, but I prefer the one's without.

Good to see you back on this thread, as goes without saying really, but I'll say it.

Had some new arrivals today.  I bought a couple of small joblots that had useful spares and when they arrived, I found there were more useful spares than I'd anticipated.  I shall soon have a 1948 Maserati courtesy of an almost completely knackered Saladin.  Just a wheel and axle swap so there's no need to take the Maserati apart and I likely shan't repaint it, I've found it's a difficult one to get cheap so I'm pretty chuffed with this since they were less than a quid for the pair.

The Zephyr 6 in the same lot is a little gem.  Excellent glass and interior, and enough paint on it that I don't feel the need to repaint.  Another one that's usually more than I want to pay for less than a quid.

I shan't go through the rest of the lot as they're a bit dull.  From my last repaints update I found I hadn't photographed this one which turned out okay.

Finally, I'm considering repainting this Victor as an Envoy for no other reason than because I can.  Tend to be cheap and easy to get hold of, this one cost me about 50p, definitely not Vauxhall's finest hour when it came to styling and the Canadian Envoy is even more clumsy

Thanks that's the one! That T does look very Marx now you mention it. Think I've got a light blue Merc Cougar with a very small back window somewhere.
    P.S. Nice table top!

Edit. That light blue Merc is like this one found on google. Check out that ace cardboard interior!

First 250 miles down. Went to Dereham and back today, not far away from the destination, got a big thumbs up from a chap standing at the side of the road in a hi-vis jacket, a shiter or perhaps a former MK1 owner?
Only problem that has appeared is that the steering is creaking loudly when turning the wheel. Any ideas? Probably going to get it up on the ramps next weekend for a good look over the underside, I can order any parts needed cheaply, another good point of this little car!
There's something else missing from the inside in addition to the radio, and the interior light. In front of the gear lever (just to the right of the 12v socket) there's a small slot with a multiplug sticking out.
Also, can anyone tell me if it has intermittent wipers? I can't find any switch for them. It should have a single wipe but the wipers don't currently self park (may just be a fuse, I haven't investigated yet)

Today, Nicole met some of the family at a fleet wash.
Gave the underside a good hosing and managed to get a few more lbs of Welsh border mud out of the wheelarches and inner wings. Also topped up the oil as it was on the minimum mark. Took about a litre of finest Tesco 10w40.
Got it insured as well, just got to wait until Thursday before taxing it so I don't lose a month's tax.

Did a bit of cleaning under the bonnet too, didn't go mad with it but I did notice a couple of bits that need attention. There is a wire that holds the (forward hinged) bonnet open, this has snapped and someone's replaced it with a well-positioned cable tie. This has broken as well, so I'll see if I can find some suitable wire to make a better repair.
Secondly, the radiator is shaped like a banana after the accident! Amazingly, it doesn't appear to be leaking coolant.
Its got red OAT antifreeze in the cooling system, is this correct?
I also discovered, this evening, that not only does it demist far better than any car I've owned before (unsurprising really) but it has a little alarm to let you know you've left the headlights on. Which still works

So, Seller was as expected, evasive, no eye contact, although he did pick me up from the station. Thanks, appreciated.

I was given @ 30 secs to glance at the car before being ushered indoors to meet (disabled) Dad, settle up - at which point my Driver had to get back to work ‘ really urgently’. But don’t worry, ‘ it’ll start really easily’. Not from where I’m standing it won’t, it clearly hasn’t moved in a very long time, and looks a mess.

Key in the door, unlocks but no central locking. Key in ignition - dead. Pop bonnet, battery sides blown out slightly - so it’s borked. Thankfully I had brought a replacement with me so was swiftly wrestled in, and the car span over.
Squirt fuel up the inlet and a dose on the air filter got it running, briefly, but it kept dying. I hadn’t brought a replacement pump..,
Fourth time it caught, the existing pump whined loudly into life, the car settled to a sensible tick over. All seemed good.
I cycled the auto box, and it strained but wouldn’t move. I rocked it back/ forth and the rear brakes - locked on high with a near vertical handbrake, finally freed. It moved. It felt ‘ normal’.

I returned to the home owner for a bucket of water, fill my expandable 5l bottle ( seized brakes need drowning or dodgy head gasket saver). To say he was surprised it was running/ had moved was an understatement - although he tried hard not to show it.

Quick rinse down to shift the worst, and 40 mins after arrival I was away - to a prebooked mot 120 miles away.

I was pleased with the way it ran, the rust mentioned is untidy but surface, the interior was sound ( smells giffer), the car felt eager.
And it was, until I properly needed the brakes, when the pedal went near to the floor and the steering shook noticeably. Pumping brought 5hrn back, but I was unsettled.
Strange, as the pedal was normal when first started. I surmised the disc was probably rusty where the pads gripped, so proceeded down to Weymouth & inland to Dorchester with care. They were borderline dangerous at this stage, (esp in an auto) but I felt that once on a main road, safe distances and a gentle speed would be safe enough.

The car settled, the heater warmed, the dials were as they should be. The car was 3/4 full of rancid fuel, enough to get me home ( no pez shot- sorry!)

The brakes gradually improved with constant use, & the car became noticeably quieter. I was followed by a Traffic car for around 5 miles along the A31, and expected a tug, but it didn’t happen. That rinse over worked I guess.

Home arrived safely, without incidence, and I switched it off, for the very first time. It’s now on the button, tyres seem sound, lights all work, wipers borderline but I just slung it in for the pre booked test - and it only passed!

Seems Dad had been telling the truth when he told me that it hadn’t moved since it’s last Mot, as it had covered 137 miles since - & I drove 115 back to mine, then 4 to the test!

An advisory on a slightly rusty brake pipe, Minor distortion still showing on the brake rollers ( which we both agreed would probably vanish with use) was all we found. Totally solid, although the paint needs urgent rectification as the sills are near bare.
I ran it through an automated car wash on the way home, and drove home. It’ll stay off road for a week or two ( I have 2 manual Espero both on the road) whilst I protect the underside, but it’s effectively ready to go.

I was wary of buying another automatic Espero. I’ve a lovely, low mileage one but it’s a horrid compromise, the gearbox ruins the car, taking all the joy out of the engine, and destroying fuel consumption. This one is much better, with the gears better suited. Similar to my 2 manuals, with my low mileage clean one not driving half as nicely as my high mileage (65k!) ratter.

I’ll try to get some pics of all 4 together sometime - a rare sight you’ll not see often!

Weren’t things better though when your choice of trim, barring special editions and suchlike, were L, GL and Ghia which came with a predefined set of features, Arather than now where you have a couple of models and then 470 options.

Especially when buying 2nd hand. Far less having to compromise on your wish list because you can’t find the right car with the right options specced.
